STANDARD FEATURES
ADVANCED SYSTEMS

Strengths:
  • High Performance Vessel: The Catalina has relatively good flight performance for its size, and this is particularly flexible because of its engine and maneuverability systems as well, making it an ideal pursuit vessel and skirmisher in dense terrains such as asteroid fields or orbital traffic and structures.
  • Adaptable Weapons: With the exception of its autoblasters, all of the Catalina's weapons have the ability to use different payloads or fire modes, making it a versatile strike platform.
Weaknesses:
  • Small Boat World: Being such a small ship, the Catalina has a limited operational duration, and with that, no other embarked starships such as shuttles or starfighters.
  • Vulnerable Rear: Like its parent design, the Catalina has a relatively large, exposed engine block that is notably vulnerable to enemy fire.
Description: The Catalina is a small and agile warship sometimes referred to as a 'torpedo boat' designed to act as a raiding and patrol vessel within the Silver Jedi's 4th Fleet under Admiral Quee. An evolution of the earlier Liberté-class Light Corvette, the Catalina can be distinguished visually by its much better armored bridge. In terms of performance, the Catalina has some minor differences that are largely the result of updates with newer technology. Perhaps the most salient of these updates is the vessel's point defense system, which now relies more on extended missile batteries, ECM abilities, and minelayers rather than the smorgasbord of different direct-fire weapons systems. While a capable light combatant, the mostly peacetime nature of the current state of the galaxy means that many Catalinas are serving in auxiliary roles, such as armed couriers and VIP transports. Thus, it remains to be seen if its improvements over its predecessor will merit a larger and extended production run with a wider distribution across the Silver Jedi's forces.

Technical Descriptions

Crew and Internal Environment: By in large, the Catalina retains the original Liberté's internal layout and crewing standard. The front cockpit has now been mostly encased in armor, replacing much of the previous panoramic view with a more traditional, small viewing slot that mostly serves as a back-up to flying by sensors and using projected holo HUDs. While two people can run the ship for basic spaceflight (even one in an emergency), it requires dozens of people to effectively operate its shields and weapons in combat.

Hull: The base hull design of the Catalina is unchanged from its parent design. The Catalina is still largely produced in prefabricated sections which are then welded together and contained by a laminated durasteel-trimantium hull. However, it now uses materially superior but thinner matrix armor instead of traditional titanium armor plating.

Hyperdrive: The Catalina has a pretty typical hyperdrive system for a ship its size, capable of efficiently propelling the vessel up to x1.5 speed. The prevalence of interdictor technology to incorporate two hyperspace coils in the ship's HIMS design, providing it with very limited interdiction field penetration capabilities.

Shields: The Catalina retains the Liberté's Aspis-class Shield System, which provides the ship with average shielding for a ship its size. The ability for the shield to partially automate itself is well-liked by Catalina crews, especially those that are short-staffed.

Sublight Drives: The Catalina is propelled by several banks of Nimble-5 Ion Engines which typically provides the vessel with an above average amount of speed. These engines can temporarily boost the Catalina's speed to exceptionally high speeds at the cost of lowering its maneuverability. Conversely, the Catalina's maneuverability can be increased to moderate levels at the cost of sublight speed by using the ship's Gulfstream maneuvering system. This flexibility combined the Catalina's small size makes it excellent for maneuvering through exceptionally dense areas of space, such as asteroid fields or heavy orbital traffic.

Weapons: Like the Liberté, Catalinas are mainly designed to act as skirmishing and patrol vessels and remain equipped with weapons suited for those roles. The Catalina's largest update has been to its weapons systems, with some of its point defenses being removed and/or upgraded to more modern equivalents. Space from removing some of these defensive weapons as well as sacrifices to the ship's cargo and passenger space have allowed it to carry more ordinance weapons as well. With minelayers, the Catalina now has an effective way to discourage mass pursuit or interdict enemy space traffic even once the ship has left an area. Catalinas typically carry Cometburst space mines, but the minelayers can carry a variety of other common mine types such as Defender Ion Mines.

Carrying Capacity: Catalinas have space to carry two squads of troops in typical ISAF formation sizes. However, it's not uncommon for Catalinas to actually carry fewer if any of those troops, as that complement is usually too small to board or defend against most enemy combatants. In actuality, the cabin space for these troops is typically used for logistical and auxiliary purposes. It's not uncommon to see Catalinas pressed into the role of intrafleet shuttles, couriers, cargo haulers, and rescue craft within the Silver Jedi's Fourth Fleet.
