His voice began to falter, the Jedi Master said, “Once a man came to this place, a Dark Jedi of great purpose. He could not be turned from this place by my power, nor could I vanquish him. For three days we battled, his arts against mine, and when done, he had bested me. I thought he would slay me and carry off my riches, but instead he stayed, for his only thought was to learn my knowledge, so that it would not be lost when I passed.”
Ekul sat in wonder, for as much as he knew about the Force from Ko, he thought this a marvellous thing. In his mind’s eye he could see the titanic struggle and the great powers working. “For three years he stayed with me. He learned all I could teach, for I could deny him not. But he taught as well, and his wisdom gave me great comfort. It was because of him that I learned the Force is neither black or white, but a single entity. It was because of him that I learned to respect all life, no matter how mean of character they may be, and vowed to spare any that came to me. He also had suffered at the hands of others, as I had in the wars with the Sith, for much I cherished was lost. This man had the art of healing the wounds of the heart and mind, and when he left, I felt the victor not the vanquished.” He paused and swallowed, and Ekul could see that speech was coming difficult to him. “If my own kin could not have attended my deathwatch, I would as soon have him sit here, for he was the first of thy kind, Ekul, that I would count friend.”
“Who was he?” Ekul asked.
“He was called Cataris.”
Dott looked thoughtful. “I’ve heard his name. I was told he was just a myth.”
“A myth he is not, Dott,” said the great beast, thickly. “Still, it may be that he is dead, for he dwelt with me ages ago.”
Cataris is a mythological Dark Jedi holding nigh-legendary status among the few that have heard his tales. His story is told that he had been the offspring of a warrior father and an escort mother. It is said that he and his brother, Elgon, were once noble Jedi during the times of the Gulag Plague. A time when the galaxy was wrought with death and disaster. In this time of darkness, they were a beacon of light and hope for the galaxy, until Elgon succumbed to the plague. Cataris was engulfed by sorrow as those closest to him began to perish, but his natural immunity as a result of his intense Force-Sensitivity kept him from sharing their fate. He was witness to great suffering, and shared in his own pain. Great dangers began to rise, it is told in his legend, considered as wildly untrue by lorekeepers and historians. Cataris himself could not bring himself to live any longer, wishing only to give himself fully to the Force and be one with his beloved wife.
In a moment of great despair, Cataris plunged himself from the greatest spire of the Jedi Temple. Though it is said his death was recorded in the archives, there is no actual proof of this ever occurring, or any mention. The Four Hundred Year Darkness nonetheless is a highly undocumented era. As Cataris began to dissolve into the Living Force, something wrenched him back, away from his desired fate. A Sith known as Darth Praedyth performed Transfer essence on the notorious Jedi, forever corrupting his spirit. Cataris, struggling with his own mortality, despair and now the darkness that seeps into his mind, struck down Darth Praedyth, but he spared his life. Cataris fled into the outer most regions of the galactic disc, never to resurface until the duel with Ir'cara'suhl. Believing that Darth Praedyth is still out there, alive, Cataris vigorously trains himself for the day he will kill Praedyth. He forged himself two blades known as Cataris' Revenge, weapons of equal legendary status as Cataris himself, if not only for the fact of the mythological stories told of its adventures.
In the epic duel between Ir'cara'suhl and Cataris, Cataris was kind and caring to the Duinuogwuin and proved it, gifting him a series of presents. One among them were his twin blades. Cataris did not tell Ir'cara'suhl why he gave them to him, but Ir'cara'suhl believed that Cataris knew in his heart, when he dismissed his anguish and fury for Praedyth, that the one he had been harbouring a seething grudge for had long ago died of old age. A revelation that Ir'cara'suhl had coached him into seeing. Cataris left the blades behind, and vanished once more. It was only a century later when Ekul Selah, later known as The Dark Man, would arrive to find Ir'cara'suhl laying on his deathbed. In his last moments, he allowed Ekul unprecedented access to his belongings that he had accumulated over his life. Among them were the twin blades. Made of Phrik, they posses a curved blade with a razor-sharp edge.
