OUT-OF-CHARACTER INFORMATION
- Intent: Create a mass-produced combat droid for the Confederacy
- Canon Link: B2 Super Battledroid
- Permissions: N/A
- Primary Source: N/A
- Manufacturer: Free Givin Manufacturing Caucus
- Affiliation: The Confederacy
- Market Status: Closed-Market
- Model: CD-2 Battle Droid (CD= Confederate Droid)
- Production: Limited
- Modularity: Very modular, two main combat variations exist and weaponry can be swapped out for various repair equipment depending on what the situation requires.
- Material: Durasteel, Basic Droid Brain
- Command Relay: While the CD-2 does have a basic droid brain, FGMC engineers ensured that the CD-2 can connect to a central control computer to better coordinate large units, such as planetary invasion forces. This is a blessing and a curse, as the central computer does somewhat increase the CD-2's tactical ability it also means that the destruction of the central control computer would cause chaos as it does take several minutes for the built-in droid brains to activate, leaving individual units essentially helpless until their droid brain can activate.
- High Modular: As the Confederacy is limited in its manufacturing capabilities for the time being, droids are often used to fill several roles. The CD-2 Battle Droid can be modified to carry out several roles outside of the two main variants designed for combat duty.
- Rapid Fire: The primary function of the CD-2 is to put large quantities of blaster-bolts down range very quickly, its advanced twin blaster is designed for this purpose making the CD-2 a deadly opponent for those lacking cover.
- Bulwark: While not the most survivable, the CD-2 can take several more hits when compared to standard organic infantry meaning it can survive where other units cannot.
- Droid Brain: To compensate for its increased firepower, the droid brain within the CD-2 is rather basic. While a central control computer or organic officer can improve the unit's tactics, it simply isn't enough to match any organic combat units.
- Overheat: With increased firepower comes the issue of overheating. While normally not an issue, prolonged fire can cause the twin blasters to burn out and render them essentially useless, greatly reducing the CD-2's combat ability.
- Lumbering: Along with its rather simplistic droid brain, the CD-2 was not designed with speed in mind. While it can "run", most organic units can outrun the CD-2, limiting its effectiveness when crossing into open terrain or in pursuit of enemy forces.
When the Confederacy was reformed and a discussion of its combat focus arose, very few questioned that the bulk of the Confederate military would be made up of droids. The issue was that the Confederacy could no longer solely rely on vast numbers to win the day, as other factions employed their own droids or had seemingly infinite numbers of organic warriors to match the relatively small Confederacy. So, a thorough examination of past droid units, even units that dated back to the Clone Wars, was ordered and various different proposals were made for a combat-effective battle droid that could be produced in sufficient numbers while also being able to match standard organic infantry units.
The CD-2 somewhat met these standards. The Free Givin Manufacturing Caucus took heavy inspiration from the B2 Super Battle Droid and as a result the CD-2 both benefits and suffers from the close match to the ancient design. But the Confederacy, in its current state, is rather limited in what it can produce and the CD-2 was more than capable when it came to battling planetary defense forces and armed rebel groups, the primary enemies of the Confederacy as it consolidates its position. True combat tests against the infantry of other galactic powers aren't possible at the moment, do the CD-2's designers deem it good enough for combat use.
That being said, the CD-2 is an effective combat platform that provides both heavy firepower and an intimidating design that when combined into a squad would be a deadly combination. Organic forces would continue to make up the bulk of the Confederacy's special forces, but they now had a reliable combat droid to back them up should they require heavier firepower or a large number of droid units to act as cannon fodder as they carry out more sensitive operations.
