ADVANCED SYSTEMS
Advanced Weapon Systems:
Splinter - Designed to aim for either starfighter or missiles, the splinter comes with its own internal sensors that are used to detect threats as designated by the ship’s targeting systems. A flak cannon is a flak cannon and the guns can run out of ammunition in a long engagement and has a potential to jam up if fire is sustained for too long.
[*]
Advanced Flight Control:
Laren - These droid interceptors were built to take on missiles rather than other fighters. Small droids are deployed from the hangar and are sent to fire on missiles/intercept them away from the Charger II and more importantly the convoy.
Strengths:
Anti-Missile: Developed to continue her job of capital ship harassment, the Charger is now more effective to handle missiles with the Laren Droid Interceptors and the Splinter Rotary Cannon.
Payload: With a flextube launcher the Charger can be used for more than just hit and run missions on larger capital ships.
Weapon Vulnerabilities: Without any anti-ion meshes or any way of slowing the impact of ion or emp weapons, the Charger II remains vulnerable to sustained ion cannon fire.
Ammunition: The Splinter can and will run out of ammunition in longer engagements forcing the Charger II to pick and choose her battles.
Turning Radius: The Charger II’s turning radius leaves much to be desired as turning gives opportunity to enemy vessels to fire while she conducts the task of turning both herself and her guns.
The Charger II part of the Mark III Imperial project whereby an overhaul of older First Order designs are turned over. In this project for the Charger II it meant bringing her up to a more modern standard and the first of which was giving her a small hangar in which to deploy the Laren Droid Interceptors. This also meant upgrading the Charger II’s guns and shields where she would play not only the role of escort in a larger convoy but she then supports the Raskova III and even the Dagger III.
As part of the Mark III the Charger saw a switch from straight baradium to flextube torpedo launchers. The Charger also gained the Splinter Rotary Flak Cannon to help with the combat role of escort. She also gained turbolasers and ion cannons giving her more flexibility than she had in her Mark I phase. The ship was made with the idea of a straight forward escort role, leaving her turn radius with something to be desired. The make up for this of course was her high speed, between this and her interceptors along with the addition of the Splinters the Charger II was ready to take on missiles and keep the convoy moving.
