- The Charon-class is outfitted with all the features and facilities one would expect from a vessel of its size and purpose, among these:
- Standard Communications Suite - HoloNet & Subspace Transceiver
- Full Mind-Machine Interface Integration
- Antisepsis Field Generators
- The Charon-class sports a SLAM drive, allowing it to accelerate to incredible speeds for shorter periods, at the cost of manoeuvrability.
- Better, Faster, Stronger: Agile and well-armoured, the Charon-class is one hell of a starship - and certainly no slouch in the armaments department either, its massive turbolasers resembling the weapons of a Battlecruiser more than anything else.
- Omnidirectional: Built for optimal weapons coverage, the Charon-class is able to fire three out of four anti-capital cannons - including the pair of superheavy turbolasers - forwards or backwards, or all four in a devastating broadside.
- Mo' Dakka Mo' Problems: Condensing so much firepower into two superheavy turbolasers gives the Charon-class the ability to pose a threat to vessels many times its size, under the right circumstances, but also leaves it vulnerable to targetted strikes once its shields are down, to the point where a single well-aimed torpedo could eliminate almost half the vessel's firepower! More an inconvenience than anything else, the firing of such massive weapons also tends to cause power shortages in "nonessential" systems such as showers, lights, and artificial gravity.
- Dedicated Brawler: Too fine-tuned to risk adding anything but a tiny shuttle bay, the Charon-class carries neither a fighter escort nor the support craft necessary to transport anything bigger than its small crew complement and perhaps a few droid bodyguards.
Piracy has long plagued the stars, "vile degenerates" eager to exploit any weakness to fatten their own purse - especially troubled is the Unknown Regions, for its obscure routes and uncharted planets are all but impossible to monitor. The solution to this issue, at least in Erakhis' regard, came with the Deimos-class Light Frigate, flotillas of such vessels weaving a web able to constrict on any who dared harass the flow of wealth.
The pirates of the Unknown Regions, however, are a special breed - mad enough to ply their trade in such a region and vicious enough to have survived it. Not easily cowed by a government-backed corporate defence fleet, in other words.
Banding together under a cunning warlord, they lured an Erakhian task force headed by the Charon - the Deimos-class Light Frigate serving as the flagship of Arctrus' corporate fleet - into a devastating ambush by attacking a colony ship in the LN-636 system. Through the sudden emergence of a Neeran-class Raider Frigate and the activation of its gravity well, the six frigates that made up the task force were trapped and surrounded - unable to outmanoeuvre their foes, the sleek vessels were lost with all hands, the colony ship boarded soon after and its passengers sold into slavery.
The sheer outrage this caused is hard to overstate - within two weeks, the Federal Senate of the Erakhian Federation had formally declared the pirates "enemies of civilisation", giving the Federal Security Council carte blanche authority to make whatever acquisitions necessary to prevent another such atrocity.
The first vessel born of this more expansionary naval doctrine, the Charon-class alleviates the flaws of the Deimos, sporting far more powerful shielding and, on account of its size, even more powerful turbolasers. While the vessel is incapable of fielding starfighters of its own, it is often paired with light carriers - even without such escorts, however, its agility, omnidirectional quad laser cannons, and subcapital-grade variable warhead launchers makes it an adept starfighter screening vessel, despite its comparatively large size.
