- Modularity: No
- Production: Limited - Primarily for use by the Galactic Alliance's SIA.
- Material: Metals, micro-electronic components
- Clandestine and Commonplace: these little devices are convincing replicas of existing coinage, to the point of realistic weathering and wear, designed to look commonplace and not draw attention
- Counterfeit: To all but a numismatist, these are convincing replicas of common coins and credits
- Clutter: These little gadgets can be left in or on desks, or in pockets, or anywhere else one might find a coin, without necessarily raising suspicions.
- Convenient: Need a distraction? Toss one of these in the other direction and someone might just go look to see what it was. They might even pick it up!
- Not That Counterfeit: These coins will not fool devices like vending machines, slot machines, or other sensitive mechanized devices.
- Limited Range: Due to their size, the batteries for the coin's alternative function (as a bug or tracking device) is low-powered, meaning one must be within a hundred meter range, give or take, to listen/record or track.
- Single Purpose: These devices come as either a listening device or a tracking device, but not both. They are differentiated by serial numbers: those ending in even numbers are equipped with listening devices, and those ending in odd numbers are equipped with tracking devices.
The COINS device began its life in the latter days of the First Order, as a doodle on Isobel Nakano's notepad during a staff meeting. She developed a small number of prototypes which she deployed around the MI-6 and Black Lotus offices, with an eye towards how many people would notice the counterfeit pieces, and was delighted when it had an 93% success rating -- the only failure being an analyst who, upon being unable to get Cheezy Doodulz™ from the MI-6 lobby vending machine, reported the failure to the building facilities department, who confirmed that the machine was operative. The analyst escalated the problem -- Cheezy Doodulz™, of course, being a critical component of his work performance -- until the Quartermaster demanded to inspect the coinage he was trying to use and discovered the counterfeit. Before the project could be taken further, Isobel Nakano resigned from the First Order and did not continue to develop the project until coming under the auspices of the Galactic Alliance's Strategic Intelligence Agency. She put Black Lotus to work fully developing the project, creating a multitude of devices to mimic the coins used within and minted by various governments in the galaxy.
