Caelia Noelle Lamora normally didn't drink alone, but these were tumultuous times. Tonight she neither cared which year it was made, nor what it tasted like. She had feigned interest enough at the King's event earlier that evening to last the rest of the month. The public obligations and the mask one wore executing them was only one of the many expected sacrifices of the nobility.

The door to Caelia's old room slid open. Simply calling it a room didn't really do it justice, as it came with its own living room, bedroom and reception area. Each section was large enough to count for the average Oroccan's entire apartment, but none so richly decorated, and none with the magnificent balcony view overlooking the great Ebonflow River.

Caelia was surprised to see the servant droid walk in. The silver-plated droid, with its traditional gray cape, carried a tray with a glass of champagne. Someone else at the old Lamora estate clearly thought she needed something after today, but she would argue that champagne was not the vibe.

"Father?" she asked it, turning on her high heels to watch the droid approach, but making no effort to meet it halfway. "No." it replied simply. The curtness of its answer caught her off guard, but she couldn't be bothered to check it. "Are we celebrating?"

"No" As complement to its answer, the drink was thrown straight at her face. Before Caelia could collect herself a clenched metallic fist slammed into her midsection, knocking the air out of her. She felt her hair being gripped before its knee shot up against her face. She could taste the blood in her mouth before her back hit the ground.

With a twist from her hand a small table went flying straight into the droid. It wasn't enough to topple it over, but it gave her time to get back on her feet, and deliver a punch straight to its face. She wasn't sure which hurt more, that, or the punch in the gut.

Being dressed in a long, blue dress wasn't ideal for a fight, and the high heels certainly didn't help. If only she had been sober. "What the feth are you doing? Stop! At once!" It didn't listen, it gave no reason, it just kept coming. Caelia was pushed backwards, until she found herself out on the balcony, nowhere to hide and nothing more to throw at it.

She held out her hand, wishing, begging, willing this bloody Force to do what it was told. At first it didn't seem to notice, but she recalled something she had read, about being calm, letting go of fear. She wasn't sure what made it stand out to her, but she had no other tricks up her sleeve. The pain slipped away to the back of her mind, she tried to forget the fast approaching murderbot… It was working! The droid didn't stop, but it slowed down. More, and more, until its feet lifted slightly from the balcony floor. She was really doing it!

Caelia would've laughed, if holding it in place wasn't fething exhausting to do. "Answers… Now" she managed through blood-covered teeth.

"No"

The quick beep, beep, beep was the only warning she got before it detonated. The blast took out most of the balcony, the shockwave sent Caelia flying - the wrong way.

The rapidly descending silhouette of the young noblewoman could be seen as she fell, fell into the cold embrace of the Ebonflow River.

The Diplomat. It wasn’t a title that Brandyn wore with any grace. It sat uncomfortably upon his broad shoulders. When he envisioned becoming a Jedi, he had never seen himself taking the route of sleuth, spy and saboteur. Diplomat was perhaps closer to what he imagined, but as a child he had more longed for what happened when negotiations fell apart. Either way, he didn’t feel like he would ever made a good diplomat. Perhaps that is why Valery Noble Valery Noble had sent him. Something to stretch his horizons.

At least, he wasn’t alone on this mission. Several Jedi had been tasked with various aspects of what was still a developing situation. It had been two weeks since the failed attempt on the life of a Oroccoan noblewoman. Barely failed mind you. Orocco had been notoriously off-limits to the Galactic Alliance, and the Jedi Order. They didn’t care much for outside intervention. When the invitation to assist the investigation and protection detail had been received, the Order had been quickly tapped for the important mission. Orocco was in a state of turmoil, something with which Brandyn could understand. This latest incident threatened to descend the planet into an all out and bloody civil war. This could not be allowed to happen.

The Jedi shuttle had touched down, and the greeting party had seemed understandably tense. The Jedi being there was likely not a popular decision. Some would have considered an invitation for annexation. Again, this was something that the Jedi had been tasked with - assuage fears, they were only there to assist.

The Jedi assigned to the mission quickly dispersed to their assignments, for Brandyn this meant interviewing the Noblewoman herself, and providing assistance in her security detail. Once he had ascertained her needs, he would call on other Jedi on the mission to be diverted to her security detail as needed. As a burgeoning Shadow of the Order, Brandyn wished he was tasked with the investigation. It was more his style. Though, he was not unaccustomed to talking with noblility.

He stood before the door to the private treatment facility. He was unsure how much of a recovery this…Caelia Lamora…had made since the incident. Aside from the initial request for help, little information had been forthcoming.

The door before him was impressive, the design motif being one of a series of peaked arches all recessed into the wall and shaded a deep bronze colour. As it slid open, he found a room that was bathed in sunlight, an empty luxury hospital bed sat beside the wall to the left. The room was well furnished with a desk, reading chairs and a comfortable corner for conversation. Beyond the reading chairs were doors that opened out onto an airy balcony. A lone figure, dressed in what was definitely not a hospital gown, stood.

”Lady Lamora,” said Brandyn, now standing in the doors to the balcony and in a tone all official, “Brandyn Sal-Soren of Naboo, Jedi Knight.” Brandyn always found it helpful to speak of his homeworld, it lent and air of nobility that was rightly due his lineage and helped pave the way with most noble’s he met.

Sal-Soren was not the only Jedi Knight that Valery Noble Valery Noble had sent on this mission, she sent Connel as well, but to do more of the “dirty work”. At least that is the way that Connel had read it, mind you he was not insulted or anything, as he was certain she did not mean it in any slight. Connel was certain that the Grandmaster was sending him into a situation that would utilize his strengths to their best, just as she had no doubt done with Sal-Soren.

Too bad the two Knights had never met to this point. There would be time for that later as the assigned task force had their assignments to get to. Connel was assigned to interviewing estate staff and following up the droid’s known (and unknown) path throughout the day. Planetary security and representatives were reluctant to allow him access to much of what he had requested, but eventually acquiesced under the condition that he was to be accompanied by representatives as well as their own security. Worries of an incursion and threats of an insurrection ruled their thoughts, no matter how accepting and accommodating Vanagor was to this.

He was not here to cause a problem, he was here to help solve one.

Connel’s first objective was to the Operations room of the Lamora estate. He was of course escorted by the entourage, but in this case was also met by the droid master. The facility was as tech savvy and state of the art as many military facilities also giving a glint of the regality that shrouded the planet in extravagance. An older, but well kept Bith stormed over towards the group pointing his finger. “Under the Residence Reform Act, not even government personnel can invade a private property without authorization!”

“I assure you, Droidmaster Teth, that we are here only…” The lead Rep, obviously a man that had dealings with him before spoke up.

“To what?” Teth shouted in interruption. “Put on a show for the Jedi here? Yes, I know who you are!” Poking Connel’s chest, he continued his rant. “I will not let my life’s work be the subject of your scrutiny, or theft.”

This guy is lucky that my father is not here and that he is dealing with me.

I am only here to examine the remains of the droid. The sooner I look over the remains, the sooner I will be out of your way.

His finger now firmly in the face of the “patient” Jedi, Teth growled. “I’m going to hold you to that, schutta!”

Trying to examine the droid.

Caelia should have been dead. Miraculously, she had survived. She didn't remember hitting the water, she didn't even remember the fall. She had passed out way before that, yet subconsciously she had managed to protect herself through the Force. There was no doubt that she owed her life to her special gift. And now the streets would run with blood.

She had been out for the better part of a week. In that time, Aldric Eldorienne, king of Orocco, had sent for the Jedi of the New Jedi Order. Against the wishes of her father, the Duke, one might note.

Caelia was a little conflicted on the matter herself. She had read about the Jedi, and the Sith. Before she'd been thrown off that balcony, she had attempted to use a Jedi technique. Both sides thought the other was misguided, and it was hard for her to say which was right. Perhaps truth lay in the middle. To get the chance to observe one up close was not an opportunity to squander.

The Jedi Knight found her standing with her back turned, gazing out from the balcony. You'd think I'd stay away from balconies after… No, I will not surrender any part of myself to these barbarians. The dress she wore was black, with a turtleneck neckline, and a long pencil skirt that reached down almost to her ankles. It was conservative, yet molded itself to her form with seamless elegance, highlighting the graceful lines of her figure.

Black, to symbolize mourning for the attack on Orocco, which as a member of the nobility, she represented. It was the perfect outfit given her condition; it was the dress that showed not a single bruise, aside from those on her face and the cut on the back of her right hand.

There was no doubt there was tension that played host to the Jedi on Orocco. Caelia felt it too. Though some of that went out of her when she heard him introduce himself. A steeled face broke into smile.

"They chose to send a Sal-Soren? Well played, Jedi Council." she shook her head slowly, still smiling, and turned to face him more fully. Noble to noble felt more like familiar ground, fewer toes were stepped on. "I am Caelia Lamora. Thank you for coming on such short notice, and welcome to Orocco. Shall I have refreshments sent up?" She might've been beaten to the point of near death, but feth if she wouldn't be a spotless host.

In many ways, Brandyn represented what she could have been. In her childhood she had been shielded from the Jedi, so that she could become the independent lady of House Lamora. What would her life be like had it been otherwise? Would she stand here now, as Brandyn did before her?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Now now, Teth, let the man work. We all want to get to the bottom of this, and holding him back does no one any good." a rich and sonorous tone came from the side. A tall, broad-shouldered human came into view a moment later. He had piercing green eyes, and a closely trimmed beard with hints of orange in it. "The Jedi are the Duke's guests, after all. Call him schutta one more time, and you may find some other place of employment" It was a fine balance. Teth was brilliant, truly, and any house on Orocco would be fortunate to have him. Yet Teth enjoyed certain goods as well, which he would not wish to lose over some petty squabble.

The man looked at Connel with a friendly smile. Fulfilling the expectation of an introduction, he inclined his head and said "Evander Lamora, at your service, Master Jedi. I trust you have everything you need? If any doors close before you here on Orocco, let me know, I shall have them opened for you."

"I understand you have only just arrived, but the wisdom of the Jedi are legend. Have you made any progress?"

Brandyn seemed momentarily taken aback by the fact that she knew his family name, or seemed to know it at least. “Refreshments are necessary only so long as you require them, my lady,” he said with a bow, brow sill furrowed from the surprise. It was a strange thing to be both nobility and servant of the Order. He understood her ilk, and yet he had to retain a different air about him given his role.

”Forgive me,” he said with an apologetic wave of his hand, “my family name is familiar to you?”

He glanced about the balcony, looking for access points, and then over the side. He muttered in dissatisfaction. This was an easily targeted area. His eyes fell on the buildings across the open square down below. A couple of said buildings were high than the one in which the Lady Lamora stayed, and had balconies facing towards her own.

”You seem to have recovered well from the attack,” Brandyn commented with a glance towards Caelia. She was attractive. Definitely the type he may have pursued in a bygone time, but things were different now. She didn’t hold an allure strong enough to send his mind beyond just an acknowledgement of her appearance.

”Is there…anywhere else that you could be housed? Some place with less direct access to your apartment? I fear even a Jedi could not keep you safe from every possible direction.”

Teth was really trying to get under his nerves, and while he had his father’s temper, he had his mother’s focus and kept it on his task. Luckily another appearance in the doorway would help facilitate that, and keep him from punching Teth out. Of course his sugary sweet approach, while a welcome change from the grating sandpaper that was Teth, it lended itself to beguiling tones and cadences. Perhaps he was being sincere and admirably wanted to see this through, perhaps he was just keeping tabs on the Jedi, it did not matter to Connel either way.

Thank you for the access, sir. As he looked over the remains, one thing looked clear, there wasn’t much to look at. The debris was either charred or broken… then again… reaching down and holding up a transceiver, he wondered. Since when do droids carry remotes?

...

Brandyn might come to regret turning down the offer of refreshments before their conversation was over. Meticulous planning lay in Caelia's nature, and she usually always had a carefully laid plan ahead of every important meeting, yet… She was at a loss as to how to play this. The phrase 'at a loss' summed her current state up pretty well.

Caelia knew the Sal-Sorens by reputation, but in the flesh? This was a first. Just that simple train of thought had her work to force away the early sensations of anger beginning to burn within her. There was more to this meeting than met the eye, but Caelia wanted to get the measure of the man before she revealed just how much.

"Of course. Any who cares for fashion has heard the name Sal-Soren" and despite whatever impression her black mourning dress gave, Caelia did care for fashion. "Orocco has kept to itself for long, even so, the other noble houses of the galaxy have interested me. Particularly those so closely aligned with the Jedi. How did that come to pass, if I may ask?" Caelia carried on the conversation as if the two had chanced upon oneanother at a social event, glossing over the very serious cause for his visit. The Jedi had surely not been sent for idle chatter.

As the conversation moved on to the topic of her attack, she gave a dismissive flick of her hand, as if they were dealing in yesterdays news. "I'm fortunate to have access to Orocco's finest. They've done a fine job patching me up"

Caelia had meant to walk with him to the balcony, though she stopped in her tracks, and for a moment she was unable to keep the flash of anger behind her eyes concealed. "Ah, so that is the strategy of the great Jedi, to hide away somewhere remote and hope for the best? That is not good enough. I-" she realized she had closed the distance between them, and was gesturing, let alone talking, in a manner and volume not appropriate for civil discourse. She took a deep breath and a step back, before stating calmly "I need you to be more than that. Forgive me, the past week has been… A lot. I am not myself" for once Caelia was being completely sincere.

"I want to put an end to this. And hiding simply doesn't seem... I want to do more"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Upon seeing the remote, Evander stepped closer. "That... Is not regular" the nobleman stated calmly. It did not appear to be something in-house, and Evander doubted they were dealing with a droid uprising.

Evander opened all the doors the young Jedi required, and seemed to want to walk with him through all of them as well. His words were silk and smooth, too much so. While he might not evoke any deep sense of trust, he did seem genuinly concerned about getting to the bottom of this. He may have opposed the Jedi coming here in the first place, but now that they were here, obstructing them seemed counter-intuitive. The damage was done. The gates of Orocco stood open to the Jedi Order, and by extension, the Galactic Alliance. Might as well dismantle the gatehouse altogether.

Brandyn was not about to tell her his life story. It was not the time nor the place, besides speaking of his story would mean having to recount recent events. Those events he would rather leave unsaid at this point. He moved the conversation with simple deflection. “The Force willed it…and I forced it,” he said, alluding to his running away from home as a teen.

When she called into question his courage, Brandyn bristled and bit his tongue. He wanted to snap, oh did he, but he held his peace as she berated his intent. With each word though, his eyes narrowed and any casual movements gave way to complete stillness. “When one is being targeted by assassin’s, one ought not stand on a balcony that is an open target from at least fifty different rooms across the way,” he said calmly, with a noticeable edge, “some would call that…foolishness. But I do not believe that of you.”

”My Jedi senses do not currently detect a threat…but those buildings are far from here…and there are ways to hide even from the most powerful of Jedi. Prudence should dictate that we continue the investigation from a place of greater security…or…we will need more Jedi.”

Brandyn winced with the last idea. He really just wanted her to acquiesce to his request, but now suspected she would take the latter option.

There were really only two different ways he could go with this right now. The question is, would they be fruitful, or just a wild mynock chase? Looking over the remains one more time, there was a specific theme, a style to all of the parts, that all seemed to possibly incur that they were built or designed by the same source. It was prudent to go to the source he had in front of him, well… to the side.

Would Teth know where this droid was built? Or at least bought? Still sharing looks between the remote and the other pieces of nearly destroyed tech, he was no closer to a true hypothesis, but was on a path to it at least. If not him, who? Who might? There was really no other option here and the subtle approach was not going to work. Father would always say that in an investigation, ”The more noise you make, the more doors open for you” meaning that more often than not, anyone with something to hide tends to be more rattled and prone to make mistakes.

I guess what I am looking for is who were the last to associate with these automatons.

...

So he had wanted it, chased it even. It stood in stark contrast to the way she had been brought up.

There was something different with the way he was breathing and the manner in which he was looking at her. She had upset him. In that realization, she managed to calm herself. She had upset him, yet he restrained himself. It was more than she could say about herself. Caelia was so used to being the one to push people's buttons, she barely knew what it felt to have hers pressed.

She wanted to ride the waves of her anger, to step onto the balcony and boldly proclaim those who wanted her dead could come in person and be flayed alive.

"Of course, you are the Jedi" she said behind a well-trained smile. As much as she wanted to hunt the dogs down, she didn't know which mutts to put down. "I put my trust in your expertise." as if to show that she had the capacity to listen, she turned away from the balcony, seemingly thinking better of it, and walked back inside.

The Jedi was outwardly stoic, though she thought she had caught a change in him. Thoughts were bound to be wandering, pushed away to the side to give way to his words. It was on the edges she lurked. Doing so had become almost second nature to her now, as part of her consciousness drifted unseen towards the edges of his mind, searching for whatever scraps to latch onto, to read what was discarded... Caelia did not even pause to consider how good of an idea it was to probe at the mind of a Jedi through the Force.

She had been chastised before by past tutors when she had tried to invade their minds. But they hadn't noticed when she lingered along the edges like so. Of course, none of them were trained Jedi Knights...

"Of course, the Lamoras own estates across the planet. Would the quiet countryside be more to your liking? My uncle owns some land on Wielu, if you mean to take us off Orocco" her tone suggested she didn't much care for the latter option, but she voiced it all the same. And then it hit her... How easily it had gone from 'we' to 'the Lamoras'

"Your companion..." she started, referring to the other Jedi who had come with her. "Your Padawan? Or the other way around?" She knew Jedi loved to travel in pairs, one master, the other the learner.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Evander looked between Teth and Connel, then drew out a datapad. He fiddled with it for a bit, and held it out to him. It let him know who was in charge of acqusitions, and though it didn't mention this specific droid it did say where they got the models from.

"It's not a new droid. At least the model is familiar to me. I wouldn't suspect the fault lies with the manufacturer, though you are of course free to investigate. Could it have been meddled with?" he managed to deliver it as a question, while making it clear he already landed on that conclusion. Then a thought, and he helpd up a hand with an "Ah"

"Would you like me to round up the servants?"
That did sound a touch more 'firing squad' than he had meant. Evander didn't know how Jedi did their interrogations, but was very curious to find out. "Or, by all means, if you need to go somewhere, take my speeder"

“No. We will stay here as you desire,” Brandyn said, tone a tad snippy.

“And no…I do not currently have a Padawan,” he said, clearly showing signs of annoyance. It was a continued thorn in his side that he had not been tasked with training the next generation of Jedi, whilst his sister had more Padawan that hands to hold the back.

Pulling his wrist mounted comms device before his mouth, Brandyn spoke with a noticeable edge that was not at all intended for the Jedi on the other end. “Requesting a second Knight be sent to Lady Lamora’s convalescence room. Connel…if you can be spared…probably best it were you…”

His hair spiked up on the back of his neck. Just for the moment, a feeling, a presence, one that had eyes or at least intent focused on this space. Death resonated from the aura of the person that dipped in and out of his senses.

”…and make it quick…”

What he was looking for was definitely a narrow hunt. There was little to the trail, but there was indeed one that he could follow. Then Evander made an offer that left a momentary visually bitter taste in his mouth. Shaking it off, it gave him the idea to grab his comm-link.

It’s Vanagor, I’m heading out following a lead, I’m on comms. Going to put it away, he looked back at Evander. This is an investigation, not an inquisition. If there is anyone you think I should talk to, we can approach them. Until then, I think it would be prudent to meet with any droid sales, repair, or manufacturers here on the planet. Then Sal-Soren sent out a blast message, and all Connel could wonder was “really?” He was not political or a complainer or anything, in fact, the young Vanagor considered himself very much a “team player” and it seemed that wasn’t the case with others, because by reputation, when a Sal-Soren requests assistance, it isn’t really a request, and they are so connected that it might as well be the Council making the call.

Then the snippy comment about his pacing unpursed his lips. Looking at Evander, wondering if he were the only one to take the comment the way he did, he responded. Yes, sir. Looking back at the steward, he nodded. Thank you anyway.

Caelia could sense his frustration. It was said that first impressions was a hard thing to recover from, and it would seem she had given herself plenty to work with in that department. Despite the opening, despite the great temptation, Caelia decided against her nature and did not press the matter further.

«Very good, Master Jedi. I'll do my very best to ensure-» Caelia's eyes drifted to the entrance, as the doors slid open. That was fast, she thought. The light was off in the hallway outside, making it hard to see. That particular problem was eliminated by the flare of red blaster fire coming their way, followed by two droids marching in.

Caelia screamed, and dropped down to her knees, crawling out onto the balcony for cover. This really was more of the Jedi's wheelhouse anyway. A canister dropped onto the balcony, aggressively shooting out a thick smoke-like gas that obscured her vision. She could barely see her own hand held out in front of her. She did, however, heard the thud of a single pair of boots landing onto the balcony stone, distinctly noting the thud of boots, and not the metallic clang of droid legs.

At first she didn't want to make a sound to give away her location, but that was quickly abandoned as she felt a vibroblade drop into the stone where her head had been. It was as if for a split second that every cell in her body had screamed danger, and she moved just before impact. «Jedi? Jedi! Jeeedii!»
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Of course, Master Jedi, as you say" Evander said with a bow of the head that was just a touch too well trained. Connel likely would get the sense that this man kept his true feelings well concealed behind a veil of slick curtesy and words. He wasn't throwing any wrenches in the Jedi's way, if anything he was making his work easier. Yet no part of his gut feeling would tell him this was a man to trust.

As the Jedi seemed to be on his way out, Evander merely gestured out towards a datapad that promptly got placed into the palm of his hand. "Very good, Master Jedi. I'll have a list of such individuals sent to you right away"

"Always a pleasure"
Far be it for Evander to obstruct the Jedi in their mission. The sooner they succeeded, the sooner he could go back to his businesses without the eye of the New Jedi Order or the Galactic Alliance hovering closely over him.

Before the doors had even finished opening, Brandyn already had his saber in hand. The blade burst into life with a snap-hiss sound.

Droids. Dammit.

The first few shots got past Brandyn, but he soon put himself between Lamora and the assault. The droids quickly trained their fire on him, targeting him as the greatest threat to their mission. This worked to Brandyn’s advantage as one droid fell to the deflected blaster fire, and the second was quickly cut from should to opposite hip, sending it clattering to the ground.

Lamora’s cry for help alerted Brandyn to that which was taking place behind him. He spun to see smoke. Lamora was visible through the Force, any assailants were not immediately so. But there was movement, through the haze, that he could make out.

Brandyn advanced into the smoke. His mind focused on the greatest source of danger to Lamora. Her senses alighted upon a figure of metal. Another droid. Brandyn’s saber struck in its direction, but was intercepted by the droids own blade.

Brandyn coughed. The smoke filling his lungs, before a feeling of a secondary attack was coming from behind. He dropped to one knee, the blade from the droid in front of him and behind him colliding with his saber that he held over his head.

Frustrated at the situation, feeling that the proverbial “broth being spoiled by too many cooks”, Connel made his way up the stairs. He did not rush as there was no point, he was not lollygagging though, Vanagor was examining the notes he took on his datapad. He was doing his own work and was not here to serve another Jedi, they were meant to work together. It was not that Connel was being “childish” about this, maybe he was a little petty, but there was no conversation, no coordination, just one being “bossy”. That wasn’t right. Connel wasn’t proud of his behavior, but “attitude is a reflection of leadership.”

Then he had heard the weapons fire…

By,The.Force.[/

Sprinting up the first set of stairs, Vanagor was in the common area and right behind attack droids moving on and past estate staff and servants running, desperate for some semblance of safety.

SNAP-HISS

SNAP-HISS

There was already a wave that had made it to the stairs past him and would have to be dealt by Sal-Soren, Connel had these to take on. There was no warning, no threats or demands, that was their mistake as the droids opened fire, he moved like a blur, utilizing the Force to enhance his speed in a “low” assault, cutting the legs out, dissecting the insides with his off-hand, and separating them with his main-hand. Reverse grips ruled the fight as the young Jedi Knight was bifurcating the torsos of the would be automaton assassins. It could be considered a thing of beauty if you liked that sort of thing.

The last droid fell, and Connel was at the next flight of stairs as he reached out through the Force again, droids were in front of him, the next wave that Sal-Soren didn’t know about yet. He wouldn’t have to as a powerful “push” would send them flying into the attic, sending debris and dust back into his face.
