Combat Tournament

Alright, so we've had a couple of false starts trying to get the Galactic Battle Arena going, but we're nothing if not persistent and maybe a little bored, so here goes:

Everyone is cordially invited to participate in the First Grand Tournament of the Galactic Battle Arena. The rules are simple:

Once we find out how many players are interested, we'll create brackets. This is single elimination, no take backsies. Each fight will last for two weeks or until one player is defeated. In the event that both of you are still breathing by the end, the fight will be judged by myself and [member="Sinistra"] . There may be other judges, but we're the only two I can confirm at the moment.

You needn't be an experienced duelist to enter. In fact, this is a good way for novices to learn the ropes, and every now and again, one turns into the dark horse that makes it all the way to the end.

Since this is not a Chaos canon event, character death is on the line, and worming your way out of certain death is forbidden. Make the most of it. Have fun, and if you're going to die, go out like a badass. You don't get bonus points for most epic death, but if we can find a badge maker, we might be able wrangle up some bling for it. Who knows?

Poor sportsmanship will not be tolerated. A certain amount or banter and ribbing is expected, but don't be an ass. That will lose you the fight as easily as a bullet to the brain pan.

The last fighter standing at the end will be crowned GBA Champion. That title stays with you until the end of time, and everyone will know that you are not someone with whom one should kark lightly.

Consider this a preliminary signup. If you're unsure if you'll be able to commit you can still put your name down, just let us know if you have to drop out before we make the brackets. If life gets in the way and you have to withdraw, please give us as much notice as possible so we can make accommodations.

If you're interested, speak up, and let's get this show on the road.

That's 8. It's Monday now, so I'll close signup at 1700 EST on Friday. Invite all of your friends, enemies, or anyone you think might like a good brawl.

Yeah, I'll make brackets tomorrow. Or today. Whatever.

I know there are a couple of invasions pending, so I need to coordinate with everyone on what start date will be best. We can probably squeeze in the first round before everyone starts hating everyone else, but we'll see.

Alright, here's our first round:

[member="Vrag"] vs [member="Solan Charr"]
[member="Lisette Kuhn"] vs [member="Triam Akovin"]
[member="Alen Na'Varro"] vs [member="Jardo Snow"]
[member="Nazo"] vs [member="Garrus Garon"]

[member="Fabula Caromed"], you're odd man out. I couldn't make the brackets work with an odd number without adding an extra round just for you, and that would suck balls for everyone. As of right now, you're the backup. If you can find someone to fight before 1000 EST Monday morning, you'll be in the action. Hate it worked out that way, but next tourney you're guaranteed a seed if you want it.

Alright, so here's what I'm looking for in a fight, in order of importance:

Is there a clear winner? Obviously, the goal is to kill the other guy. It's a lot easier to judge a match if one guy is on the ground with a stump where their head used to be. This is the single most important thing I look for in a fight. However, it is still possible to win the fight and lose the match.

That leads us to point two: was either fighter a raving dick? The point of this is to have fun. I understand a certain amount of banter is almost mandatory, but there is a line. If you start belittling the writer in the narration, I will come down on your ass like a rabid koala. Those things are karking vicious. Play your character, but don't be an ass. I promise I'm much better at it than you, and while I prefer to have fun, I actively enjoy knocking people down a peg or six when they deserve it.

If there isn't a clear winner, does one fighter dominate the match? Unless both fighters are evenly matched, one will usually control the pace. Try to keep your opponent off balance and on the defensive. Though kills are nice, the vast majority of fights I've judged have come down to dominance.

Are the posts easy to understand? I don't expect grammatical perfection. For many folks on Chaos, English is a second or even third or fourth language. Props for picking it up to any extent, because that ain't easy. That said, I should be able to easily pick up on what exactly you're doing. More importantly, your opponent should be able to read your moves and respond accordingly.

If something isn't clear, do the fighters communicate to solve the issue? A simple PM can save a lot of heartache. If you're not sure, ask. If you guys can't figure it out between yourselves, by all means, shoot me a PM and I'll be happy to take a look. That said, don't abuse it. That leads into our next point:

Are the fighters flexible? I don't mean in a Gumby of way, although that can be fun in the right circumstances. If an opponent does something you don't expect, do you roll with it, or do you kick up a fuss? This is important, because nothing sours a fight faster than constantly questioning your opponent on every little detail. If a move doesn't go the way you expect, 9 times out of 10, you're better off just rolling with it. On a related note, keep your movements short and sweet. The more you do in a post, the more chances you leave your opponent to post cut your ass. I vividly recall a fight on my old site where a Jedi Master spent several moves building up a massive Force attack, only for his Mandalorian opponent to get bored and shoot him in the face. He was pissed, but the move was legit. It cost him the tournament.

And finally, are both players good sports? Sportsmanship can get you far in life. If you win, by all means enjoy it and gloat if that's what your character would do, but don't be a dick. If you lose, lose with dignity. No one likes a sore loser. If you're going to die, go out like a boss. Best death will get an award of some sort, and while it won't win you the tourney, it will merit a cool bit of bling for your profile. The point of this whole exercise is to have fun, so just say kark it and go all out.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to speak up. Also, anyone has a suggested start time, I'm all ears. I'm thinking 1000 EST Monday morning. That'll give us two weeks and a nice recovery period before the invasions start kicking off. Barring questions, either like this post or make one of your own acknowledging that you've read and understood what I'm looking for.
