Janara III
Neutral Space
Janara Three had become a bit of a crossroads over the years, as more important worlds received what you might call adverse attention. War had touched Janara Three, to be sure, but mostly before the Dark Age. Since then, it had grown to its full maturity as an unexceptional world of traffic and trade and rolling green hills. It didn't have much in the way of higher education, apart from some local colleges. One of those colleges, Janara Technical Institute, was a partner to the organization that had brought Ashin here. For further training, the local kids tended to go offworld, and offworld universities tended to come here to recruit the kids. That was what had brought the S.S. Shamballa here, to a career fair of sorts, sponsored by JTI.
The science frigate, emblazoned with the twining-tree logo of New Habat University on Varunda IX, was parked in the fair as a bit of a centerpiece. Admissions advisors, traveling NHU academics, and the Shamballa's crew were answering questions from prospective students.
They weren't all kids, either. The galaxy was just barely reverting to peace, for the most part, after some prolonged and vicious upsets. Plenty of these people were in the same boat as Ashin: adults looking to upgrade their careers, take a new direction, learn something different, and catch up on lost time. Some had the look of soldiers in search of a new career. 'Mature student' was the term, looking to capitalize on NHU's reputation for the sciences, exploration, politics, agriculture, even literature. A few of those fields would always be in demand, at least near here and over by Varunda IX.
In her off-white civilian uniform, emblazoned with the NHU twining tree, Captain Ashin Karrde lent a hand at the recruitment tables, or led the occasional tour through the Shamballa. She was aiming to be visible, accessible, and approachable.
