Could a Palpatine-like character work in Chaos?

So,

This is just a question for anyone to answer or discuss, but could someone realistically be able to RP a character who could successfully infiltrate, command then completely destroy a Major Faction from within. I'm not looking to do this with any of my current characters, however, with the recent Skirmish in the Dominion I was intrigued if something like this could happen.

Of course, there would have to be the logistics of a Major Faction accepting its demise, or transformation from one of the spectrum to the other, however, could one even successfully infiltrate a Major Faction with no one IC being any the wiser. Hell, could that character even end up helping the opposition into attacking and successfully invading the infiltrated Faction with no one being suspicious IC.

I state IC because of course, OOC one would be able to figure out that this character isn't as light side as they are trying to be. However, I feel that through no one's fault there could be accidental meta-gaming or new members could end up not realising what your character is doing and ruin your secret. So I am curious to see if anyone else believes it is possible, and if so, has it ever happened before. Has a character gone in with the solo purpose of infiltrating, controlling then completely changing or wiping out the Major Faction.

Well, something similar just happened over in the Dominion, albeit the plan put into place was a touch less subtle than Palpatine's. As for the idea of infiltration, as long as they keep their secret locked-up ICly, it will be difficult for them to be confronted. Just be prepared for things to, as always, go wrong compared to how you expect them, because that is the spirit of Chaos!

Well, the Galactic Alliance has been infiltrated by Sith, who are plotting to use it for their own ends. So it's doable if you put in the work. It's best to be above board and communicate with the faction leadership OOCly though.

Oh, and one of the Galactic Republic's leaders, Aurelia Saelari, was actually an HRD (though unaware of that) and a sleeper agent for an HRD cult called Archangel. It also briefly came under the control of a Communist dictator.

On a more serious note, I've seen people pull off infiltration and smaller acts of sabotage. There was a pretty interesting thread that just popped up the other day dealing with this subject. I've been a victim of sabotage myself ICily (vengeance is coming). However, I think you'll be hard pressed to find a faction as a whole going along with being tanked or transformed, OOCily, as it takes a lot of effort to build up to Major and maintain your status, as I can personally attest to being FO of multiple major factions. You may certainly make an attempt, but do expect resistance. Definitely communicate your intentions to make sure everything runs smoothly on an OOC level. Don't be that lame person that just flips the switch out of nowhere with no proper development or even a little hinting of your intentions somewhere.

This may not be exactly what you're thinking about, but there was a GR Prime Minister by the name of [member="Geneviève Lasedri"] that unsuccessfully launched a coup to transform the Galactic Republic into a communist dictatorship ("Selectivism" I believe it was called). While she was eventually ousted, ICily, the event had serious consequences for the GR that left it even more ostracized and accelerated its demise. I'm sure there were several other twists and turns before that, but that incident was the only one I was present for as I first became active on the site.

Not surprised others have made it work to some extend, I was just thinking as a whole deal with the transforming the Faction into the opposite of what it was designed to be would be an interesting way to play it. I mean, working slowly and methodically, so changing the style of armour basic soldiers wore, pushing Jedi more and more out of the group. Focusing on NFU and then switching from a Senate like authority to dictatorship say if a major lost to the Faction happened. Would be not overly obvious at first but then looking back there would be signs.

And I agree OOC they would have to be fully honest and it would stand to realise if they were giving support to two different Factions at the same time then there would be OOC openness. I was just curious to see how close one could pull, what in my opinion, one of the greatest political tricks in history. And to have the people want it, the ploy was far great than what happened in Roman period as there is the whole Jedi Order being crumpled by the Sith as well, but there is some reminiscence from that period.

Anyway, I am glad to see that people are generally open to ideas similar to that. And appreciate there would be restrictions in place for some things as people might not want to lose their Faction they worked hard for. However, think be good if there was a story that made a Republic-like Faction completely fall apart from within due to a dark sider being in command while all ICs are oblivious.

Once a month somebody attempts to organize a Palpatine style coup. Some are successful and some are not.
