Originally designed as a collaboration of Republic Engineering Corporation and Kuat Drive Yards, the Courageous-Class Star Destroyer was an evolution of the Galactic Alliance's carrier-focused naval doctrine. After the success of its sister vessels, the Endurance-Class Star Destroyer and Redeemer-Class Star Defender during the Sith-Imperial Civil War Republic Engineering quickly overtook many other local shipwrights, becoming the sole designer for Alliance vessels. However, admirals noted that as the Alliance grew and their military's numbers swelled the highly advanced, limited production runs of these staple vessels would not sustain a growing war machine. Shipwrights like Kuat, Corellia, and Rendilli stepped in posing various designs before Kuat was ultimately chosen. Producing some of the most capable, if not simple, battleships they were the obvious choice for the Admiralty Board. However, not long after the war's conclusion Julius Loghain attempted to violently secede from the Alliance to supply the New Imperial Order with warships, closing off its yards to the Alliance. After Kuat was secured and Loghain deposed, Kuat was nationalized in all but name, many of its designs taken by Alliance intelligence and the Yards put under strict watch. Without the full trust in Kuat, the designs fell into Republic Engineering's hands which finished the carrier design.
The Courageous was 1200 Meters long and 550 meters wide and had all of the visual DNA of a Kuat Drive Yards. Of its most distinct features were its dual command towers and dorsal blast doors that ran along the spine of the vessel. These doors retracted revealing a cavernous landing bay connected to garages and cargo elevators, allowing the vessel to disgorge wings of starfighters onto the battlefield at once. The door could also partially open near either end of the runway to allow for smaller groups of ships to launch when the vessel was under heavy assault or for the expediency of access to the main hangar bay. Alongside its impressive fighter complement, the Courageous could also maintain a full regiment of marines or soldiers along with associated walkers, tanks, and air transport. As an onboard defense contingent, the Courageous carried a battalion of Alliance battle droids and a company of marine "handlers".
Despite its role as a carrier cruiser, the Courageous was a competent battleship and was able to fight on the frontlines with powerful shields and heavy turbolasers. The Courageous was armed with dual heavy turbolaser batteries, dual laser cannon turrets, a comprehensive point-defense array, heavy proton torpedo tubes, a flex-tube launcher, and most interestingly a mine layer. The mine layer lent the vessel to defensive operations as well as offensive and lacking an interdiction projector of its own it could instead lay interdiction mines for traps and ambushes. In order to reduce cost and increase the number of vessels able to be produced quickly, many of REC's innovations had to be omitted, thus increasing crew sizes on these vessels. The twin towers of the Courageous served as an advanced communication hub and flight command deck with the traditional bridge of the ship being integrated into the ship somewhere in the space between the towers.
Unusually versatile for a modern warship of its size, engineers often joked that the name of the vessel should have been the Jedi cruiser. Capable of defense, offense, and simply applying the right kind of pressure to deescalate situations, the Courageous was poised to be the new darling of the Alliance Fleet. Plans for the vessel were halted however due to the start of the Second Great Hyperspace War and the subsequent destruction of Csilla and sacking of the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. Instead turning to other alternatives. Defeat after defeat the strained navy of the Alliance clamored for new vessels. With the acquisition of Fondor and from pushing from REC execs the Courageous-Class Star Destroyer would finally see deployment after the battle of Empress Teta. The first of the vessels were assigned to Battlegroup Kenobi, a unit that had seen considerable losses during the Sith-Imperial Civil War. Uncomplicated in its design, the Courageous' design was proliferated through Alliance allied shipyards with most of the first vessels being produced at Fondor as part of a deal with the newly admitted Alliance world. This marked a shift in the Alliance's contract behavior being the first vessel developed for use exclusively by the Galactic Alliance.
