Alone again. Not permanently, of course, but these last few weeks she had always been in the company of someone (most likely her master) so much of the time, that Millu had almost forgotten how it felt to be just one more nameless face in a crowded shuttlebus flying somewhere. It had been an especially long time since Millu made this specific journey. The girl hadn't been to Denon in years. The last time she had set foot on the ecumenopolis was about three years ago, when a job had brought her there. She hadn't spent more than the necessary time there.
Now though, Millu was going back to the place where everything had crumbled. Her childhood home. She was fairly nervous of what she would find there, such a long time had to change some things. She wasn't even sure what she wanted to find. Nor very sure of why she was even undertaking this journey in the first place. It might do her some good to get some stuff that might still be in there.
Beric had left for Moorwood Peak that morning to do some research and other knight things that she wasn't quite sure about what. She hadn't told him abaout this visit to her home planet, it was mostly a decision taken in the spur of the moment a few hours later when she noticed in a report that Fort Ypso had a shuttle departing for the city planet that day. It just felt like it was something she was supposed to do.
The girl put her earphones on and set them to play some jatz, before laying her head to the side and trying to sleep through the trip.
Coming out of the shuttle at one of the many crowded spaceports of Denon, Millu took to walking around cautiously to see exactly where she was, finding in a few minutes that despite all the changes, apparently she was at the same spaceport where, five years ago, twelve-year-old Millu made herself a stowaway to flee this very planet. It had been a dumb decision, and she certainly wasn't proud of how she had just left without even saying goodbye to Cali Ziiva , the only person who seemed to care about her back then. But, it had gotten her to where she was now, and for that she was certainly happy. Regretting some things was a small price to pay for all that was going right in her life now.
From there, finding her way through those streets was easier than she thought it would be, the layout of the houses and neighborhoods were still imprinted in her memory, even all those years later. The girl wondered for the thousandth time that day what she'd find back in her old house. Would someone else have moved in? Would it still be abandoned? Were her and her family's things still there? Had her old neighbors taken anything? All those possibilities and at the end of the day, Millu wasn't sure if she wanted to see what had become of her childhood home.
She was getting closer. Just a few more turns and I'll be at the end of the street. From there, it's just a straight walk. But then, just as she rounded a corner, Millu glimpsed something bad. There were three Corp officers tormenting a kid in rugged clothes that didn't look to be older than eight. The poor child was crying and looked very scared. She couldn't let them get away with it, she had to save the poor little girl. But how? And if she butted in, the Corps would probably come after her... The squire really didn't want any trouble with the authorities. She'd just sneak a little closer in order to listen to what they were saying and then go on her merry way... Millu knew that was cowardly of her, but she had somewhere to be and still had to get back to Frosthall before her master if she didn't want him to know that she'd gone out of planet alone without even notifying him.
"Please let me go... I need this food for my mommy..." the kid sniffled.
"You're nothing but a little thief, you scum! You are lucky we haven't taken you to custody yet!" growled the bulkier of the three officers.
"But my mom is hurt, she won't survive if I don't give her food!"
"We'll see who will be hurt if you don't give us this fruit you stole back!" the same man raised his hand like he was goinc to strike the kid who hid her face behind her hands when-
CLACK!
"Hey! Why don't you three pick on someone who can defend themselves?!"
The three Corps turned their attentions almost immediately to the direction from where the pebble was thrown at them, to glimpse a teenager dressed in brown. Millu was still processing that now it was she who was on those brutes' radar, but that rock throw was a good call. At least she could see from the corner of her eye that the little girl had escaped in the blink of an eye, running at max speed in the opposite direction. But now the squire had a problem.
"Catch her!" The skinnier of the Corps yelled and all three begun running at Millu, who turned tail and ran as fast as she could from them. It seems that trouble finds me, after all.
She was being chased by three corporate officers and had nowhere to hide.
