Intent: To create a pistol version of the powerful Mk I Bolter. This pistol will be a heavy, low rate of fire sidearm, but lethally effective if it hits.
Development Thread: If needed, ammunition and 4 other bolter types already approved.
Manufacturer: Firemane Industries and Technology
Model: Boltgun Mk Ia, also known as the Cylix Pistol after the fearsome native species of Dahomey.
Affiliation: Firemane Industries and Technology, Kaeshana Confederation, Omega Protectorate (under license).
Modularity: No
Production: Minor, these weapons are only issued to officers or other troops who use a pistol as their main weapon.
Material: Standard pistol components.
Classification: Explosive Slugthrower
Size: Single/Double Handed
Length: 40cm
Weight: 2.5kg
Ammunition Type: Fires APEB Rounds.
Ammunition Capacity: 5 bolt magazine.
Effective Range: Effective range: 200 metres, though shooting beyond 50 metres requires careful aiming and a stationary target.
Rate of Fire: Semi-automatic, 60 rounds a minute.
Special Features:
Description: The Omega and later Firemane bolters have made a great mark on the galactic stage. As a weapon against Force users and against regular enemies they have shown their worth time and again.
However, in all that time there was no pistol version, making users keep a blaster sidearm for close defence. However, with the lessons learned from the APEB ammunition and the Hold-Out Bolters, a shorter ranged weapon was now both practical and desirable.
The bolt pistol is not a traditional sidearm. It sacrifices the lightweight, high ammunition capabilities of a blaster pistol for heavy, impact rounds.
Thus, the bolt pistol has many strengths. It is of tough, rugged design, with an absolutely lethal shot which can crack armour less than Quality 7 open and tear an enemy apart from the inside. It has greater stability and accuracy at long range than most pistols, and the sheer mass of the weapon means it can be used as an improvised club when needed.
On the downside though, it has equally as many weaknesses.
Firstly, this weapon is heavy. Holding it in one hand and firing is possible, but extremely hard without exceptional strength or reduced accuracy.
Secondly, despite having better accuracy than a normal pistol, any firing over 50 metres is more luck than design, especially as the APEB has no blast radius.
Thirdly, the weapon’s small five-round magazine is easily used, leading to a reload in the middle of battle. The small magazine was vital to make the pistol use the large APEB bolts, but this imposed a limitation on the design.
Fourth, this weapon’s highly specific uses means that it is not necessarily a straight replacement for a blaster pistol. A blaster pistol hits almost as hard, is lighter and fires many more rounds without reloading. Unlike the bolter longarm, this is not an automatic choice for everyone, but a conscious choice based on likely circumstances.
