Cyprian can hardly remember life as a Youngling. Most of it was beaten out of him as an initiate to a sorcerer's slave army. That is only the life he knew cutting a bloody swath through Wild Space at his master's behest with his Vatavi brothers.
A simple life, but a one that left him satisfied.
Until their master turned against them, wishing to bind the veterans' spirits to new artificial constructs to create the perfect killing machine and cement control his fledgling system wide empire. It was effectively a death sentence for the Vatavi.
Cyprian was the first to volunteer himself for the procedure. Grinning toward the operating room. His Master was there to see to the first transfer personally. Cyprian still grinned as he cut down the Master's assistants, and then the head sorcerer himself.
The indoctrination all Vatavi had gone through was good. While they had been reformed to show loyalty to their master above all other things, the sorcerer had also become their enemy by ordering their destruction. They had been taught to annihilate all enemies before them, without quarter.
Freedom was theirs, but not before years of civil strife with loyalists to the Sorcerer, would be usurpers, and malcontents seeking revenge against the Vatavi.
In time, he crushed them all.
When all was said and done, many of the former slave soldiers returned to homes barely recalled, or found a new calling as administrators to rebuild the system under a Junta. Cyprian himself could not settle, as he looked beyond the system to see new threats emerging. The system had been liberated from the grip of the Sorcerer, but now faced complete extinction at the hands of the Bryn'adûl. The pressure they put on Wild Space also created instability in a frontier where there had been little to start.
So he left his home system with cohorts from the disbanded Vatavi, on a new crusade for survival.
