STRENGTHS

DESCRIPTION


A variant of the Huntsman in use by the Tsis'kaar navy, the Pilum offers greater lethal effect than its cousin due to the inclusion of horrific "blue phosphorus" mixtures, though due to this it lacks the Huntsman variant's reliability.

Like its cousin, the Pilum functions by using extremely powerful magnetic fields to condense and then project chunks of supercompressed chemicals. In this instance, the munitions used are usually X16, resulting in a diamond-dense chunk of radiotoxic contaminants that travel at approximately 15% of the speed of light towards a given target.

Should the projectile strike a solid surface or shield, the magnetic containment violently ruptures, subjecting a large impact area to blast-furnace temperatures as well as exceptionally high radiation and significant kinetic impact.

Again similar to its cousin, the Pilum is capable of serving as either a flak battery or a weapon for tackling capital ships, fully capable of threatening either with its toxic shard munitions. Should the projectile fail to penetrate, it can still leave a blazing patch of armor-melting chemicals, potentially threatening a hull breach even after impact.

Unfortunately, while the Pilum shares many of the Huntsman's virtues and adds a few all its own, it also shares the Huntsman's flaws. Switching from flak to demolition functions requires a significant amount of time, leaving the craft highly vulnerable should it need to attempt to switch mid-fight. The Pilum also comes with a particularly ugly danger unique to itself in the form of X16's legendary volatility. Should the weapon battery be destroyed, it can cause terrific damage to its own ship as its chemical munitions detonate or leak.
