SDV System: Sonic Depth Viewer
OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
- Intent: To create an advanced GPS technology that comports better with the Star Wars universe than "normal" GPS.
- Canon Link: GPS
- Permissions: Original Content
- Primary Source: GPS
- Manufacturer: United Trade Authority
- Affiliation: The Diarchy & Friends
- Market Status: Open Market. The Trade Federation refused to issue the UTA a patent due to ongoing conflicts.
- Model: Version One
- Modularity: No. The system is inter-dependent and would need to be reprogrammed to be modular.
- Production: Mass-Produced. The Trade Federation refused to issue the UTA a patent due to ongoing conflicts.
- Material: Made of a light-weight Ersteel compound that is printed with a reflective screen material.
- Personal Version: The portable version of SDV uses two small vertical monitor screens and it is about the size of two very large hands. It can be clipped to a person's utility belt and carried in the same way that a holopad would be carried.
- Vehicular Version: The vehicular version of SDV uses up to sixteen monitor screens to form a comprehensive holo-view of the battlefield.
- Location Finding: The SDV can help to locate a person, or an object with a significant heat signature such as a vehicle or ship.
- Depth Finding:
- Lock-On Heat Signatures: The SDV registers heat signatures from people, animals, magma sources, ore veins and kyber crystal veins, and then displays crosshairs targets over them when they enter within a 15ft range.
- Identifies Slow-Moving Hostile Ordinance: Grenades, torpedos and slow-moving projectiles are identified by the SDV system and if the vehicle or person has counter-measures (e.g. heat flares to stop heat-guided missiles), the SDV helps to deploy them accurately.
- Not Effective in Extreme Weather: The SDV will short-circuit and require charging or repair if it enters into an extreme-weather planet (too hot; too cold; too many ion storms; etc.) The Ersteel will begin to come apart under extreme heat, cold, or electric assault.
- Severely Affected by EMP Pulses: SDV will shut off entirely if it receives too much EMP damage, forcing vehicles to operate blind and personal-users to find a way to get the SDV working again. Powerful kyber crystals can also smoke out SDV technology.
- Severely Affected by Natural Wildlife: Sand Worms and even moles can register on the SDV, giving a false reading of a human presence when none was detected. Animals can appear to be people on the SDV if they are bi-pedal. This has placed many people in danger.
- Doesn't Tell You Where Droids or Small Computers Are: The SDV system has great difficulty recognizing small and medium electronic systems, such as droids, until you are right in front of them.
SDV stands for "sonic depth viewer". This technology has been used by miners, search-and-rescue parties, spacers, scavengers, military raiding parties, and even scientists to help them find their way when they are on the terrestrial surface of a planet.
