HISTORY

Birth & Early Life (0–10)

Born House Taryon, one of the many noble families of the Hapes Consortium, Dain was raised to understand the realities of power. His mother, Lady Mirenya Taryon, was an ambitious but calculating noblewoman, skilled in the art of courtly intrigue. His father, Seyth Taryon, was a reserved tactician—a man who knew how to win battles without ever drawing a blade.

House Taryon was respected but never the most powerful. Unlike other noble houses that sought to dominate the throne, the Taryons had survived by choosing their allies carefully, offering whispered counsel rather than open defiance. Dain, the second son of the family, was never meant to lead—his older sister, Rheisa Taryon, was the heir. But while she was trained in command, Dain was trained in influence.

He learned early that true power did not belong to the one on the throne, but to those who shaped the one who sat upon it.

The Court of Masks (10–16)
At the age of 10, Dain was sent to the Royal Court on Hapes as a ward, an honor granted to noble families wishing to place their children close to power. There, he was thrust into the treacherous world of Hapan politics—where beauty was a weapon, deception was currency, and loyalty was always conditional.

Unlike many Hapan men who resented their subservient status in a matriarchal society, Dain embraced it, seeing it as an advantage rather than a limitation. He understood that, while men in Hapan society did not rule, they could shape those who did.

He quickly learned to read the currents of power, aligning himself with rising noblewomen and whispering just the right advice at the right time. He became a trusted confidant, a quiet conspirator, and a political survivor.

By the time he was 16, he had become a favored consort-in-waiting of several courtly attendants. Many saw him as nothing more than a courtly ornament—an attractive but powerless companion at the side of influential people. They failed to realize that Dain was the one who guided them through the labyrinth of courtly betrayals.

The Betrayal of Selanna (16–21)
Selanna was one of those attendants and her ambition eventually proved too dangerous. When she moved too openly against the Queen Mother, she was arrested and executed on charges of treason. Her allies were purged. Her supporters vanished.

Dain should have been among the dead. Instead, he survived.

Some whispered that he had betrayed Selanna to save himself. Others believed that he was spared out of the amusement of Selanna's killers—seeing him as nothing more than a helpless consort without his mistress. Whatever the truth, Dain did not beg, did not protest, did not mourn. He simply disappeared from public view for several months, only to reemerge in the service of House Miraxis, another powerful noble family.

The court had dismissed him as a pretty pawn, but Dain had learned a valuable lesson: ambition must be tempered with patience.

The Gathering Storm (21–27)
Over the next few years, Dain worked quietly behind the scenes, advising powerful noblewomen and weaving alliances that went unnoticed until they were needed. He cultivated the art of appearing harmless, even as he subtly guided events from the shadows.

He served under Lady Astrid Miraxis, an ambitious noblewoman with a distant claim to the throne, and helped her secure key political alliances. His role was never official, but those who paid attention knew that his whispered counsel had toppled rivals and elevated allies.

By 27, the Hapes Consortium was a pressure cooker of unrest. Queen Mother Kha'la's rule had grown unstable due to the advent of rulings from the Galactic Alliance, of which the Consortium was a part. The deposition of the Queen and the work of the Crimson Veil left many dead, including his former patron, Lady Miraxis. The nobles who had once trusted him now eyed him with suspicion. Some saw him as an opportunist waiting to sell his loyalty to the highest bidder. Others saw him as a liability—someone who knew too many secrets. Few saw him as what he was: loyal to the Queen Mother.

For the first time in years, Dain was alone.

STRENGTHS
  • Master of Political Intrigue – He thrives in courtly games, where deception is more dangerous than a blade.
  • Unshakable Composure – Whether facing an assassin's knife or a queen's wrath, Dain never loses his cool.
  • Combat Proficiency – Though he prefers manipulation, he is trained in dueling and uses agility and precision over brute force.
  • Unbreakable Loyalty (When Earned) – If he finds a woman worthy of his devotion, he will die before he betrays her.
WEAKNESSES
  • Trust is a Currency He Can't Keep – He weaves lies so well that even those closest to him wonder if he is sincere.
  • Limited by His Gender – No matter how skilled he is, some will always see him as "just a man" in a woman's world.
  • A Heart Buried Beneath Strategy – Though he claims he doesn't love, what happens when he finally does?
  • A Shadow of His Own Making – No one fears him because no one believes he matters.
