Dalton Lane was a farmer out on the Outer Rim for a few years. One of the early colonists coming out from the Core after the Omega Protectorate dissolved and the Galactic Alliance was busy forging a coalition to fight against the One Sith. Back then Lane hadn't been a fighter, so any opportunity to get from under the Sith's boot? Yeah, that was accepted without a single hint of hesitation.
Chit went sideways when the Alliance fell however.
Long story short: farm burned down, Lane had to learn how to handle a gun or he'd burn along with it.
That was the day he realized that setting down your roots in this Galaxy was a fool's errand. Better to go with the flow. Move around. That way you couldn't be caught flat-footed when another regime change comes around.
Just good business sense, really.
