GOVERNMENT & ECONOMY
- Government: Semi-Authoritarian Parliamentary Republic
- Affiliation: N/A (yet)
- Wealth: High: Primarily untouched by the Gulag Plague, Damocles has begun to position itself as the center of local trade
- Stability: High No serious political turmoil has occurred recently, a balance of powers between the Prime Minister (who has far-reaching executive, military, and judicial powers), is balanced by the Wardens of the Green (a light-sided force order) who have several permanent seats in both the civil and military government, and the Commonwealth Parliament who handles most day to day things of the planet and is able to remove the Prime Minister through a vote of no confidence. Crime is also rare, the Wardens of the Green and Damocles PDF work around the clock to counter any crime syndicates and solve minor crimes.
- Freedom & Oppression: Most citizens live free, healthy, and wealthy lives most often supported by the state and able to look for careers through free education and housing. Criminals and imperial sympathizers however often find themselves having their rights stripped away, frequently searched, and imprisoned in reeducation camps.
- Military: Damocles has a network of bullet trains and orbital ships to deploy the Damocletian PDF or Planetary Defence Force, the only branch of the military allowed in the Commonwealth's Constitution. The PDF is entirely made up of clones of Roth S'baal, the Mandalorian hero who helped overthrow the Scion Government. These clones also act as the planet's police force, having the entire legal code imprinted into their memory for instant recall, and are trusted in all capacities to dispense justice.
The PDF is primarily an infantry force but has access to light-assault vehicles and a small network of orbital defense satellites should the planet ever come under attack.
- Technology: Galactic Standard
Damocles is a planet that has always struggled with its past.
Founded initially as a colony world for exemplary Stormtrooper veterans by the Galactic Empire. A place where any Stormtrooper, should they follow their orders, never speak out of turn, and exemplify all the Empire stood for could be promised a plot of land to live out the remainder of their days in peace. Realistically the percentage of Stormtroopers that would ever qualify was remarkably low, but the population swelled with hundreds of thousands of veteran Stormtroopers claiming their reward to be broadcast to new recruits and civilians as propaganda, showing the rewards for loyalty. Storm Troopers were of course not alone, bringing along any family they may have as well as close friends to help kickstart the colony.
During the rebellion, little happened on Damocles as the Empire did not see such a world as developed enough for heavy industry and its unique status saw it rarely draw recruits, and its native population implied loyalty. The loyalty of these veterans however would be greatly overexaggerated. Even the most zealous Stormtrooper, now civilian, being left to their own devices for a prolonged period of time began to question their previous orders, whether the atrocities they had been forced to do had really been in the best interest of the Empire's citizens. Yet it was only after the destruction of the Death Star over Endor that Damocles would officially support the rebellion, thousands of veterans rising up to overthrow the local Moff who had come to attempt to regroup an army and form his own successor state as so many other Imperial Remnants were doing.
Following the formation of the New Galactic Republic Damocles was not given full pardon, with many officers, troopers, and other retirees being taken to trial and convicted for various war crimes or crimes against sapience. Most took their sentencing, although slightly reduced for their recent assistance in overthrowing the Empire, and those that didn't fled the world. Contrary to what many expected, however, Damocles did not join the Republic, deciding to position itself as a friendly although independent system within Republic territory. The following decades would be fraught with political violence and extremism as many fell victim to historical revisionism, seeing the Empire as a glory that brought order and power and that Damocles had ultimately betrayed. Many attempts at military coups, populist uprisings, and corporate takeovers rocked this early stage of history ending in the occupation of the world by First Order sympathizers. This occupation that lasted for twelve years was only ended by the direct intervention of the Galactic Republic who forcibly annexed the system and dispelled the FIrst Order.
The following years were a time of reconstruction, learning from their past and wary to repeat it few were taken to trial for their crimes during the occupation years and the planet was not given the option of independence from the Republic. The Republic directly oversaw the reconstruction of the world, refusing any attempt at the formation of a planetary government for twenty years and then slowly giving said planetary government more and more control over the following decades. This time period also saw a great influx of colonists, colonizing the northern hemisphere that had largely been untouched and far away from the Southern Capital of New Tarkin. These colonists would establish a strong Republic-Centric population of dozens of species that many of the previous inhabitants began to see as invaders attempting to destroy their culture and way of life, a viewpoint encouraged by shadowy corporations and political elements that had never been properly dissolved from the First Order sympathizer occupation. This would all come to a head as a newly elected Chancellor would pass a bill renaming the capital of New Tarkin to New Mothma to attempt to further distance the world from its Imperial past and embrace its place in the Republic.
This would be only a few days before the full invasion of the Yuuzhan Vong and destruction of the Republic. Seeing their opportunity, previous New Order assets would seize the planet once again and drag it into an era of isolationism and fascist dictatorship under what would become known as the 'Scion Government', although they proclaimed themselves to be the legitimate heir to the Galactic Empire.
The Scion Government would go down in the history book for their use of cloning technology to rapidly create a Stormtrooper Corp. that would campaign in the Northern Hemisphere in a civil war that would last through that government's early reign against Republic-loyal remnants, as well as the foundation of a Force Order funded and controlled by the state fashioned after Imperial Inquisitors. A mini civil war, almost a mimic of one that had once overthrown the Galactic Empire would play out on the surface of Damocles. It would ultimately come to a cease-fire that would split the planet between the Scion Government in the South and the Free States of Damocles in the North.
This state lasted for well over two hundred years, a planet divided and mostly left to itself as it 'worked out its problems' as few saw it worthwhile in attempting to once again deal with Damocles and the ghosts of its past that continued to haunt it.
Yet it would not be war or conflict that would be the downfall of the Scion Government and the unification of the planet, but reform and reconciliation. During its reign, the Scion Government would steadily make more and more reforms to attempt to pacify its populace, constantly on the brink of revolt against the police state that dictated their lives. And slowly the Scion Government would be overthrown by a ragtag group of internal activists, led by a former inquisitor turned Jedi, a foreign Mandalorian, and an operative from the Free States. Not through violence, but through mass political demonstrations and the call for Democratic action. Mass protests, walk-outs, and riots crippled the Scion Government's bureaucracy and economy. Futile attempts by the Stormtrooper Corp., which was mostly engaged in the northern fringes of the empire, could not stop the tide that would rapidly take over the city.
Orami Kell, a jedi who had turned from the Scion Government's inquisitor order, would be elected as the first Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Damocles and would spend a majority of her four five-year terms eradicating members of her previous order and the Stormtroopers loyal to them, reforming the Inquisitors into the Wardens of the Green, and making peace with the various northern Free States. Her last great act would be to rename the capital, not to New Tarkin or New Mothma, but to True Haven, a symbol of democracy and equality forevermore.
Her successors would continue on to make peace with and integrate the various free states until the Commonwealth became the true planetary government of the world, and slowly connect Damocles with the wider galaxy again.
Since then Damocles has been wary to glorify its past, clearly teaching the atrocities and horrors of war and their past to newer generations and stamping down on any pro-imperial political movements or factions that may take hold on the planet. However the world still has a slightly authoritarian bent to it, the Prime Minister is the undisputed authority of the planet and the Wardens of the Green act without impunity or oversight to uphold the law of the planet. This strange authoritarian republic that the Commonwealth has become is a little odd on the galactic stage, yet it suffers not the dictator or the militarist and any Prime Minister who leans too far in either direction usually meets a vote of no confidence or is removed by the Wardens by popular demand.
During the Gulag Plague Damocles was hardly affected, quarantining early, and suffering few consequences as the Commonwealth primarily focused on internal industry and resource production rather than an import and export economy. By the end of it, Damocles resurfaced once again on the galactic plague as a major trade hub, boasting no large navy or military but a peaceful mostly pacifist population willing to trade and assist all they can.
