- Tough: The Dauntless class is solidly built for a head-on fight. Pilot is entirely enclosed in quadranium.
- Well-armed: The combination of two nose-mounted ion cannons and four laser cannons can devastate heavy shields.
- Sensor scrambler can target some missiles or be directed against a small number of capital ship emplacements.
- Ion weaponry: A heavy EMP or strong ion strike can kill the virtual HUD. There is a manual release, but this leaves a pilot blind for a few seconds.
- Field of view sometimes limited and no astromech mean pilots can be caught out by sneaky interceptors.
- Lack of astromech hampers ability to carry out field repairs.
The Dauntless-class X-Wing is a sturdier design than the Sprite class. Additional weight and maintenance meant the Alliance only purchased these vessels in limited numbers. The Sprite is well defended for running the gauntless of capital weaponry and features a unique virtual HUD. The pilot is surrounded in a quadranium shielding, even the viewscreen. This leaves him with a virtual HUD based on cameras and sensors on the outside of the vessel. There is a manual release, but this leaves the pilot with limited targeting computer information easily visible and takes a few moments to release.
Nose mounted ion cannons can be fired with, or separate to, the main laser cannons. Some pilots have found that running in a sequence of alternating the ion cannons in rapid fire to disrupt shields, followed by firing all weapons in single salvos can be devastating if timed correctly. All six cannons followed by torpedo fire can cause serious damage to capital vessels. The on-board sensor scrambled can disrupt missiles targeting the X-Wing. Alternatively a squadron can target capital ships with these weapons which can have a detrimental effect on point defences and anti-star-fighter emplacements.
