DESCRIPTION

When entering the exploration market, DDSI acquired custom Horizon class frigates from House Mecetti Nationalized Industries, and then outfitted them with auto-factories to produce replacement parts in the field. This subsequently resulted in legal action from House Mecetti when they realized DDSI was manufacturing patented replacement parts aboard ship without paying a patent fee. DDSI countered that the manufacture occurred outside of national territories where the patents were registered. However, they had no wish to engage in extended legal battles over the issue. They had ships equipped with auto-factories and industrial droids. Why not manufacture their own ships, according to their own parameters?

On this premise, the Insight Class was born. In addition to being made with either fully proprietary or generic technologies whose patents had expired, the Insight could address other difficulties DDSI had endured with their research frigates in the past. The Horizon class was based on a combat ship, and retained a lot of the characteristics of a combat vessel. This could make sensitive governments nervous about a warship in their sphere of influence, regardless of what the vessel was registered as. To combat this, DDSI determined that their Insight Class proprietary research freighter would be designed with less-lethal, mostly defensive armaments. DDSI reasons that this will still provide adequate piracy protection while setting the minds of security conscious alien nations at ease.

In addition to lowering the intensity of the vessel's armaments, DDSI upgraded hangar capacity in their new research Frigate while also updating sensor and communications suites to the latest available technology. In the end, DDSI produced a frigate even more suitable for research and exploration than the Horizon, and with fewer of the patent issues that hindered their production of replacement parts or units in the field. The ship is not a universal upgrade in all aspects, however. The vessel has only a single main thruster unit- reliable and efficient. This is not a problem in most situations, but leaves the frigate unusually vulnerable to the possibility of a 'mobility kill' if the engine is damaged.

While DDSI produces the Insight Research Frigate for their own purposes, they may sell examples to friendly corporations or nations at their discretion.
