DDSI has repeatedly found itself operating beyond the fringes of known space, charting courses into the unknown. However, unknown to DDSI does not mean unoccupied by intelligent life. Indeed, they have also needed to operate within the territory of previously undiscovered alien nations. These nations sometimes have more restrictive starship weapons laws than the major known powers of the galaxy.
As such, DDSI has performed research and development into defense options that will not dismay restrictive regimes. To this end, they have engineered a point-defense tractor/repulsor turret capable of fully retracting into the hull of a ship. Not only are they out of the way most of the time, but even when deployed they often do not qualify as 'weapon systems' in highly restrictive environments due to their non-lethal nature. This often allows a research vessel to fall below the 'offensive capability threshold' of foreign powers which have restrictive offensive output limits on what civilian ships can carry.
These point-defense turrets can catch or deflect incoming shells, missiles, or bombs. This can cause such ordinance to explode harmlessly at a distance from the defending ship, or simply to miss entirely. On vehicles, the tractor/repulsor turret can push hostile life-forms away from the defending vehicle, or hold them at a safe distance without doing damage to them. The tractor/repulsor turrets can also find utilitarian purposes in the usual fashion of tractor/repulsor systems, manipulating cargo or damaged vessels or vehicles.
