SPECIAL FEATURES
STRENGTHS
  • Can be launched from any launch system
  • Can issue a modulated seismic burst which can be carried through dense particulate environments
  • Modulated seismic burst carries data, detectable by standard gravitic sensors.
WEAKNESSES
  • Seismic Data Flare does not work in environments where a gravity-based interdiction field is active.
  • Each seismic flare is limited to transmitting 25 words (about 125 characters) of data.
  • Seismic flare data bursts are limited to transmitting their data within high-density particle environments.
DESCRIPTION
DDSI invented the Seismic Data Flare so that exploration frigates could communicate while within high-density particulate environments, like Ion Storms, dense asteroid fields, or even synthetic Dark Side Obscurement devices operating near ancient Sith facilities. They were useful anywhere radio interference was severe and difficult to penetrate due to a cloud, particle shroud, or storm.

The flare can be launched from any rocket, missile, or warhead launch system. It contains a Data Burst Encoder tied to a Seismic Charge, allowing the resulting seismic explosion to be modulated with pulsing output. This output can be picked up by any ship with gravity sensors, which is standard equipment on most space vessels. As long as the ship reading the gravity fluctuations is given the code, they'll be able to discern up to 25 words of instruction from the message being encoded. This is useful for coordinating maneuvers and giving orders to multiple ships operating in the same cloud.

Due to its use of charges to create readable fluctuations in dense particle environments, it is not useful in vacant interstellar space. It is also impeded by synthetic gravity emanations, such as those produced by interdiction field generators. This is because powerful interdiction fields force particles into orderly positions which fail to relay the data. Because the charge is modulated, random seismic charges do not impede the message in the same way. The encoded signal is distinct from the random chaos of unmodulated seismic charges.

While designed for its own use, DDSI makes this device available to other corporations and governments, with the exception of the Dark Empire who is under a DDSI trade embargo due to their own restrictive and violent trade policies.
