A custom build for DDSI, the High Energy Research Shield-Cruiser was the most difficult build ever undertaken by the House Mecetti Nationalized Industries of the Tapani Sector. Based on the Shield Ships of the Republic Engineering Corporation, the High Energy Research Shield-Cruiser is massively upscaled so that it can double as a Fleet Maintenance and Transport vessel, and not just a research ship.
The primary intent behind the ship was to create a vessel that could conduct up-close research on magnetars and other intense astral phenomena. Normal research ships would be seriously damaged by the powerful emissions of the universe's most dramatically potent anomalies and energetic stars.
The robust shield generators of the ship, and its massive forward armored section, allow it to fully protect the crew and systems from any threat it may be facing. Up to eight frigates of 400 meters in length or less can be docked behind the forward armored section, gaining protection of the ship's shield envelope as well as its incredibly thick forward Turadium Alloy armor.
In addition to its remarkable defenses, the ship has a massive internal volume that can accommodate numerous support squadrons, scientific labs and research facilities, and amenities for its 22,000 passengers and crew. This number of passengers and crew are actually quite low for a vessel of this size. The low crew complement is a feat accomplished due to the ship's extensive automation systems and cybernetic interfaces, as well as its droid assistance with various functions.
Because the ship is meant to endure terrible energetic environments, it has no external armaments, which might otherwise be damaged by extreme radiation and provide a conduit to the internal circuitry of the ship for dangerous electromagnetic impulses. (Magnetars and similar stellar phenomena can have twenty or more times the electromagnetic output of a planetary defense Ion Cannon.) It was already challenging to provide the necessary protection for the ship's advanced sensor arrays, which have triple-redundancy just like its shield systems. The cost of providing similar redundancy and protection for weapons systems was seen as excessive, with the shield-ship relying on its embarked or docked craft for protection if needed.
