- While almost anything can be constructed with the Universal Assembler, it is not as fast as dedicated factory facilities. Construction requires approximately 5 minutes per cubic meter of external measurement volume of the end product, meaning it would take about 32 hours to build a single X-Wing fighter using this equipment. (Using external dimensions of 13.3 meters x 11.76 x 2.4 to generate the 'volume' figure, multiplying the result by 5 to get the minutes of manufacture, and then dividing by 60 to generate hours of time for manufacture.)
- The Universal Assembler has no creativity of its own, and can only manufacture according to plans provided to it.
- The necessary raw materials must be fed into the Universal Assembler in order for it to construct the desired end-product.
DDSI designed the Universal Assembler for installation on ships performing deep space exploration far from starbases or outposts that could provide a source of spare parts or replacement equipment. A real need existed for the manufacture of replacement components when operating far afield, and also the rapid prototyping of unique tools to solve emerging problems in difficult environments. With the Universal Assembler, virtually anything can be assembled with the appropriate plans, materials, and time.
While the Universal Assembler was designed and built for installation on DDSI Exploratory and Research vessels, the company does sell the technology to other corporations and governments who express an interest.
The unit occupies a 6 meter by 6 meter space, and weighs 1000 kilograms.
