"Many discount the Light-Spear. They underestimate it. The Double Blades and even the Light Whips have more popularity, despite having few legitimate masters. But the Spear... I gotta tell you, there is nothing like pissing a Form Two User off with it. You will have the time of your life watching them go beet red from embarrassingly getting poked to death through all their fancy guards." —Darth Themis, "New Recruits"
On Odessen, Alyosha was instructed in how to build the light spear by Darth Themis . The staff originally made use of a Lorrdian gemstone in the plasma blade. Alyosha would later be given a rubat crystal by Laertia Io while on Atrisia, which he replaced the Lorrdian gemstone with. Upon Alyosha's death on Sarka at the hand of the Bryn'adul, the weapon was passed to his brother Val along with the rest of Alyosha's belongings.
The cortosis staff the spear is based upon originates with the Morgukai warriors, who sought to create a weapon for single combat against Jedi. It functions as an electrostaff, a lightstaff and a lightspear all rolled into one - the electrical generator produces electric energy to shock opponents (non-fatally; it only stuns or leaves them unconscious), the staff can be used as a blunt melee weapon, and the spear point is essentially a tiny lightsaber blade. As long as there is enough space to swing it around, it is quite effective, but in close-quarters combat or narrow spaces it isn't something you want to be stuck using. It also suffers from the same limitations and weaknesses of lightsabers and spears/staffs.
