Tracing the origins of its designation back to the Legions of the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars, the 501st had seen its affiliation and allegiance swap hands many times over.
This iteration mimics it as it was last recorded prior to the Gulag Plague, in service to the Empire-In-Exile ( Fel Empire ) during the Second Imperial Civil War. Reformed by the Sovereign Imperator, Irveric Tavlar of the New Imperial Order the 501st returns. Formed and reconstituted from the specialized divisions and units underneath Irveric's command tracing back its lineage to his time as Major General of the Sith Empire.
Veterans of the Sith Imperial excursion to Kintan, tyrants of Mandalore in their service to the Sith and then liberators of Velmor and liberators of Muunilinst now reconstituted as New Imperial Stormtrooper Legion. Its troopers are battle hardened veterans trained to handle an array of operations from strategic scale warfare down to combat with force using opponents, a skill necessary when facing down the adherents of the Sith Order in the field of battle.
