Instead, he usually wears a sleeveless tunic. Des is above average height for his age. He has the dark brown skin of the Korunnai, as well as deep brown eyes and short clipped black hair.

PERSONALITY:
Des Kovak has grown up on the jungle world of Haruun Kal, and his belief system is largely a product of his upbringing. Believing firmly in the jungle law of 'survival of the fittest', Des prides himself in his physical power and is prone to showing it off. However, he puts tremendous importance in the concepts of a 'Ghôsh' (clan) and 'Dôshalo' (clan-brother). Having been banned from his Ghôsh on Haruun Kal, Des knows he needs new Dôshalo to survive, but does not accept companions easily. Any light suggestion of friendship can set Des on a short fuse, and maybe enough to anger him. New to a larger Galaxy that he is not familiar with, Des is naïve to some points as he does know how things 'work'.

Biography

Youth on Haruun Kal

Des Kovak grew up on the Korunnai homeworld Haruun Kal, where he was a part of Ghôsh Torden. The impressionable Des quickly learned the laws of the Korunnai jungle, and came to appreciate brawn over brains or diplomacy from a very young age.

In his early teens, Des got into a rivalry with a slightly older Dôshalo named Shak Torden, a scion of the leading family of Dôsh Torden. He was one of the few people who refused to look up to the Torden family as higher born, something that rankled Shak. After one of many scuffles, Shak fell down a hill and broke his leg. Des was blamed for the incident, and his parents were given a choice: safe exile to the Balawai colonists on the planet, or being subjected to Tan pel'trokal. Since Tan pel'trokal meant near-certain death, Des' parents instead opted to exile him a small frontier town at the edge of the jungle.

Des did not stay in the small frontier town for long. After a few days of scrounging and stealing, the Balawai townfolk became too suspicious and Des was forced to stow away on a transport to the planet's capital city Pelek Baw. There, he was able to blend in with a small community of Korunnai exiles and wash ups, and their theft was far less noticeable in the larger city.

Several years later, Des was drawn to an event where off planet diginitaries were welcomed the planet, apparently there to mediate in a dispute between Balawai and Korunnai to avoid another Summertime War. Des had built up some skill with sneaking around such events, which meant he was all the more surprised when he was caught by the mediator, who turned out to be a Jedi. The Jedi, who sensed something different about Des, expressed immediate interest in him. Des, from his side, feared this strange person before him, and tried to escape.

A brief chase ensued when the Jedi set off after Des. Des took to the alleyways and threw various boxes and debris into the Jedi's path. Much to both the Jedi's and Des' surprise, a stack of power converters which he missed fell over anyway as Des instinctively used the Force. The surprise allowed Des to create some distance between himself and his persuer, but he was caught off on the other side of the alley by security officers who had circled around. They were about to deliver one of the savage beatings Des had grown used to during his life on the streets, but the Jedi stopped them and took Des in.

During the Jedi's time on Haruun Kal, Des was forced to follow him around. This was Des' first encounter with the Jedi way of doing things, and he immediately decided that the Jedi's way of doing things, favoring negotiation over force, was a show of weakness.

Early years with the Jedi

After the Jedi's successful intervention on Haruun Kal, he was taken to a Jedi Temple where he was inducted as a pupil. Right from the start, he stood out among the other Padawans, mostly because his jungle world physique contrasted sharply from the physique of those that had grown up with the Jedi or in civilised societies. Des' beliefs were confirmed when he learned he could use his physical prowess to his advantage. He flourished during combat practice, rushing into headlong offenses that overwhelmed his opponents more often than not. However, the same approach stood in his way in other fields, and he was lectured on the dangers of approach repeatedly.
