DEV Thread: Ta'ek Viss's Enhanced Field Generator

Location: Nar Shadaa's Underworld

Objective: Kill the Mark

Ta'ek had been paid quite handsomely for this job. The termination of a rival Spice Dealer was a dangerous and sensitive mission. One wrong move could reveal who had paid him to kill the scumbag, and he had been paid extra for discretion. He wasn't in the business of failure. He was in the business of dirty work. And he was good at what he did. He knew his target, Marion Lyncroft, liked to hang out at the few remaining Pazaak dens on Nar Shadaa. Ta'ek had never really enjoyed the Old Republic era card game, but he knew how to play well enough. However the thought of doing so now seemed agonizingly boring.... He sighed, then decided to suck it up and just do it.

Entering the first pazaak den, he gazed around the room. Marion wasn't here. But he saw an old informant who he had hoped to find here. He casually approached him, asking him to play a few hands.

The man nodded, and Ta'ek sat down and passed him a few credits.

"Marion Lyncroft?"

The informant smiled.

"North end Pazaak den. He should be there now."

"Thanks," Ta'ek said and folded his hand, tossing the man a few more credits.

He pressed on toward the North End, and as he neared, he sensed a whisper.

"Wait...."

So he did. Suddenly, he saw a small shimmer in the air.

"STRIKE!"

He lashed out with his blade, and felt it penetrate solid matter. The air moved, and a stealth field generator deactivated.

Marion Lyncroft fell dead on the floor. Ta'ek wasn't above looting a corpse, so he decided to take the Stealth Field Generator and the man's credits. He must have had a good night at the Pazaak Den, and was trying to leave without being mugged.

"Ironic," Ta'ek thought. He pocketed the device, and vanished into the night...

Datalog entry:

"Completed an assignment, recieved credits as payment. Among the mark's personal affects was a Stealth Field Generator. I have commandeered it for myself, as it may be useful later on. I will examine the item more closely when I have a chance."

As Ta'ek set the Datalog down, he turned his attention back to the device. Looking it over more thoroughly, he turned it over in his hands, examining it for a moment before setting in his chest of belongings, as meager as they were. He wasn't given to attachment to material things, nor of sentiment. If he kept something for himself, it was because he saw a use for it.

Datalog entry:

"Upon closer examination, i have discovered some unique aspects to this field generator: first off, i can't find any serial number or manufacturer's label to speak of. The overall design also seems more compatible with upgrades and modifications. I believe this may have been a custom item commissioned by its original owner. I will have to study this modular possibility further in time."

Ta'ek rummaged through his workbench until he found his hydrospanner. He took a deep breath to center himself as best he could.... It had been two weeks since his last job and he was itching to take another life. But it would have to wait. This was important, and although he didn't know to what end, something told him he would have use for this device in the future. He renewed his determined atiom, and set to work unlocking the mysteries of the strange device.

Datalog Entry:

"I have dismantled the device, and upon doing so, have discovered the power cell is suitable to power an EMP field as well, although not both simaltanously. I have cannibalized parts from a Clone Wars service speeder I came across in a Nar Shadaa chop shop that also was equipped with EMP shielding. Further research and development will see if this yields anything useful..."

Turning the pieces in hand again, he went to work incorporating his new ideas into the device. His mind raced fervently as he disassesmbled and reassembled the parts in his mind and in his hands. After a while, he sighed and set down the scraps. Somethimg told him soon, the EMP generator would be ready, he just needed to let the inspiration come to him. He set down the pieces and went out to hunt for something to ease his constant boredom...

Datalog Entry:

"I have successfully been able to incorporate the EMP shielding into the Generator, now for she field testing... My next assignment is to "deactivate" some assassin droids that have been set to work on an associate. Perfect chance to test it out...."

Location: Nar Shadaa Docks in an undisclosed Warehouse.

After several weeks of torturous mechanisations, Ta'ek had finally gotten the EMP generator to function. Now it was time to test it. He knew his objective, and he had managed to enter the warehouse undetected. As he scanned the area for the droids he was looking for, he decided they weren't there, and to move along. As he did, he became aware of a strange sensation like something was watching him.

<look out!!> a voice seemed to whisper in his ear.

He hit the deck just in time to see a blaster bolt whizz past his head.

He turned to face his attacker, or attackers, as it were. The 3 assassin droids stared at him with lifeless photoreceptors, weaponed trained on the mercenary. Ta'ek quickly drew his Swords and rushed forward, quickly slicing one droid clean in two with the Echani vibroblade. As he did, the other two droids opened fire. The first was carrying an arc caster, and it crackled and sparked as an energy bolt erupted from it, streaking towards him. The EMP shield held, and the storm of particles dissipated. The other Droid, however, was carrying a Heavy Repeater, and Ta'ek felt a surge of pain as the bolt singed his left arm. Enraged at the sudden burst of pain, he flung a vibroblade like a spear, and it buried itself in the offender's face, causing its head to explode violently.

"2 down, one to go," he thought bitterly.

The remaining droid fired the Arc Caster again, and again the EMP generator held. The droid began to back up while continuing to fire the arc caster at Ta'ek. Once, twice, thrice more the EMP generator held, but on the fourth successive blast, he felt the shield give out, and he received the tail end of the shock as it caused him to start from the pain, and he felt his muscles begin to twitch uncontrollably. As the droid began to fire the final shot, Ta'ek dove aside, abondoning his other sword, and grabbed the heavy repeater the second droid had carried. He opened fire, and the droid exploded in a shower of sparks and shrapnel.

"Field testing completed," he marked in his Datalog. "EMP shielding a success".

Datalog Entry:

"Upon field testing, the EMP shielding was effective, although it was unable to hold up to repeated abuse. It did repel an arc caster blast, but the obvious uselessness against regular blaster fire is even more apparent. Need to research other ways of powering more effective shielding to further improve this device's usefulness to me..."

Datalog Entry:

"I have researched more into Ray Shielding, but I can't find a power source that seems sufficient enough to power the Ray Shield, let alone all 3 shielding types. This may be a dead-end...."

Ta'ek had spent months trying to decipher the secret to miniaturizing the Ray Shield generator, but to no avail. He had owned the Stealth Field Generator for over a year now, and had made a few upgrades to it in that time, but he was unsatisfied with it. It did not yet serve him as he wished it to. He needed more from it, and it was not performing as he desired. He wasn't used to getting wjatbhe desired anyway, and had long-since accepted this fact, but when it came to machines, he had always had much better luck than with people. Maybe somewhere deep down, it bothered him that he couldn't figure out this puzzle.

"Sith spit," he cursed aloud, pushing his doubts aside to renew his efforts. He was a master of all things mechanical. This machine was no different. Come what may, it would serve him in the end, to the ends he desired...

Datalog Entry:

"Its been a few months, still no leads on the development of the Ray Shielding functionality for this device. The EMP and Stealth fields have been improved, I've been able to Incorporate Sound dampening into the Stealth Field as well. EMP shielding now performimg at optimum levels. However, i am still disappointed by the lack of progress in the Ray Shielding department..."

Datalog Entry:

"The Hutts have sent me away to Tatooine for killing that idiot Rodian they paired me with! The outrage!! Even more infuriating, they had me sealed into a suit of armor that is bonded to my nervous system! Those fools will pay for this, mark my words!

- On a side note, the suit seems to be powered by this neurological bond. Perhaps I can use this to my advantage...."

Ta'ek was now encased in the Hutts' mobile prison suit, but he was determined to use it to his ends. This armor was but another machine, and he had yet to find one he couldn't figure out.

"Sure, if you Dont count the Ray Shields," he mocked himself inwardly.

Then it hit him like a bantha had kicked him in the head.

"Of course!!"

It was brilliant. It was genius. It was perfect. In their desperation to control him, the Hutts had given him everything he needed to escape them forever. Now he just had to make it happen...

Datalog Entry:

"As I suspected, the suit's power source is more than sufficient to power the Ray Shielding I planned to incorporate to this Stealth Field Generator! At last, some luck!! I have removed the power cell from the device, and instead incorporated the field generator directly into the suit itself to bypass the need for a power cell at all. I had to work hard to neutralize some of the other security measures the Hutts had installed into the armor. This is a tough suit of armor, no doubt. And its made even harder since I can't operate on the suit by taking it off. I'm stuck in this Durasteel trap for a while. May as well get comfy...."

Datlog Entry:

"As I suspected, the new Ray Shielding works as expected, although I chose to remove the stealth field entirely to strengthen the ray shield. Something tells me stealth won't be as valuable as blaster protection in the coming days. It won't stop an autoturret or heavy artillery fire, but I knew that. As far as the blaster bolts of some 2-bit pistol jockey, it works brilliantly, and I suspect of may also prove useful against a Jedi's lightasber, I seem to see many of them here on Tatooime, and they always pay out a nice bounty for a Jedi's head...and his sword. Field testing may be required, but I suspect my calculations are correct. As usual. Ray Shielding is now functional and active, however I have noticed an increase in cooldown time switching between fields. The device takes about 15 seconds to recalibrate after deactivating the currently active field."

His idea had worked. He had once again proven why he was still alive. The Hutts had commissioned the ultimate prison for him, and he had used it for his own means once again. The power he felt as he realized how he had won this small victory was slight, but it was well-earned. Few people ever got over on the Hutts. And those that did seldom lived to tell the tale. Even the fabled Han Solo would have remained Jabba's prisoner if it hadn't been for the intervention of a Jedi.

"Where was a Jedi when I needed intervention? Some galactic peacekeepers they are."

He shook the disgusted thoughts from his head physically, and when back to admiring his creation. His Armor now had a built-in Stealth Field, EMP shielding, and a personal Ray Shield. After 17 months of grueling research, and numerous failures and roadblocks, he had finally completed this task. He lit up a deatstick, and sat back to savor the moment, something he rarely if ever did. But what the hell? This was a special occasion, even if he didn't care for sentimentality.
