Buffer Thrusters
Heat Shielding: Due to the velocity at which the drop pods reenter a planet's atmosphere, they are equipped with a series of heat resistant materials and ceramics. This system ensures that the vessel withstands reentry and doesn't cook the Hellknights inside of the Drop Pod.
Buffer Thruters: Also known as "Brakes" these thrusters fire at the last second to ensure that the Drop Pod doesn't slam into the ground, an occurrence which would destroy the Drop Pod and kill the Hellknights within.
Clear the Area: While its weapons are more or less useless against enemy vessels; they're more than capable of being utilized to clear the immediate area around the Drop Pod of any light enemy resistance. This is usually more than enough to provide the Hellknights with some breathing room to quickly deploy and setup a proper defense before an enemy attack.
Vulnerable: Due to the simple fact that theses Drop Pods are incapable of being 'piloted'; the Pilot only serving to keep it on track and being the sequence to fire the thrusts - the Drop Pods are very susceptible to incoming Anti-Air fire; or Atmospheric fighters.
Failure to Fire: There have been some instances in which the Buffer Thrusters do not fire properly. In these cases, the Drop Pod has slammed into the ground, causing damage to both the Drop Pod and nearly killing all those within the vessel. While it is rare, there is still a 10% chance that a Drop Pods breaking thrusters do not fire.
Some worlds must be conquered from both within and without. To this end the Hellknights of the Order of the Gate utilize the Dhalochar class Drop Pods to establish a foothold on a world and make way for a larger Hellknight invasion to follow. In many cases, the Drop Pods are deployed on the dark side of a world to mask their approach. Another tactic used is to utilize other vessels to create a Meteor shower and use it as cover for the Drop Pods.
Of course the Drop Pods have no real means of piloting the vehicle; making them highly vulnerable to incoming fire should their deployment be detected or the world below already have its defenses deployed.
Once the Drop Pods have made planet-fall, they unleash their contingent of Hellknights unto the world.
