Discussion: Star Wars: Princess Leia #1-2 (Comic Series)

Due to the extreme lack of hype here about all the current Star Wars stuff coming out I am taking it upon myself to get the ball rolling on some discussion. Right now there are some fantastic Star Wars comic series existing right now. One of them is the fantastic series called Princess Leia.

The story takes place shortly after Episode IV. In fact, when it starts the rebels have not even evacuated from Yavin IV yet. Of the the three OT comic series this is the earliest set of them. The main character is obviously Princess Leia and it focuses on her struggles in knowing her purpose given that Alderaan was destroyed. Of the four series this might be the least interesting to me at this point but it is only two issues in and I think will need some time to develop but onto discussion!

Any Discussion After this picture will likely contain some spoiler content.

The first one begins right after Yavin IV and focuses on Leia wanting to go out and do things. The rebel leaders think she is too important and do not want her out and about looking for problems. It is during this time that we get to meet probably the more interesting character in the series which is rebel pilot Evaan Verlaine. She is a rebel pilot who is also from Alderaan and sees Leia as being completely unmoved by the destruction of their homeworld. Ultimately it is she who Leia confronts with an idea to get out and go look for people from Alderaan around the galaxy who evidently the Empire is hunting down (no idea why but whatever).

Issue 2, for me, drags a bit but you get to see more of the dynamic of between Leia and Evaan. They are trying to find another member of Alderaan. I've read this comic twice and it still is really hazy in my mind, likely because it just has yet to grip me.

Just looking at the cover art work looks like ick.

The story sounds like shite too. Not believable to me, and I never did get the impression that Princess Leia was all that much of a compelling character, so I'm not too surprised that they karked up starting a comic series about her and her 'struggles' with the loss of Alderaan (and apparently the Empire trying to finish their genocide?).

Yeah this is the weakest of the series for me. Like you, I'm not all that interested in Leia. She's kind of bland. I will say it does seem to capture her personality well because she is rather fiesty in the OT and it carries that.

The art is not great either. I understand that it is a kind of style but the story doesn't really over come it. Its not like Legacy Series 2 where I was not all that into the art but the story was good enough to keep me interested.

And I really do not get why the Empire is after the people of Alderaan. Perhaps they expect that being native the planet makes them likely to want to rebel? idk. That's the best I can come up with.

Mark Waid's too solid not to stick with this book. That said, issue 3's been pushed back a week twice now, so there's always that worry that the Editors are keeping the leash way tight on these books so as to make sure they're, like, simultaneous...That usually irks talent into leaving.

Though, his Hulk's concluded and his Daredevil is like two issues from doing so, which leaves him to focus on THIS and his Agents of SHIELD. Good things ahead.

I hadn't checked this one out yet, though I've been reading the Kanan and Vader comics thus far. I'll have to see if this one is available, thanks [member="Selena Halcyon"]!

I think I may have an idea as to why the empire would be hunting down survivors from Aalderan.

In the old canon when Aalderan was destroyed thousands of people who had been off it at the time around the Galaxy stirred up a riot for the empire and basically spread sedition and statements of what the empire would be willing to do to other worlds, making the rebellion much stronger as a result even if it didn't show in the movies. In this canon the empire could be trying to hunt down such people who could rally other discontent citizens, and seeing as it doesn't sound too unreasonable for the empire to have a census of pretty much a whole population of a planet I'm guessing they could do this...

But then again I've never read the new comics so I honestly can't know if that's what they're going for or not.
