Dominions vs Faction Events

Hello everyone,

I have been thinking again!

And asking questions of myself 'bout the wants and needs of the faction as a whole. Naturally, we are all very capable of take care of our own RP experiences on Chaos but as faction admin it is apart of the job to facilitate events for the members.

I know, like you all do, that we seem to love Dominions and I think this is for a couple of reasons, one is that Doms give us all a chance to RP together and write a great story arc for our characters, without much pressure from the out side. Secondly, it is for the faction (which I thank you all for that) so we can expand and become strong.

But the question I have had is that are we getting too big because of this? I don't really think we should get too large (cloud influence) and begin to look like the Repubs of old, but that is just one persons idea. And I would like to hear what you all think about this.

So, I was thinking that from time to time we should have a faction event to continue the want and need for the story arc (both for individuals and faction history), which would remove the element of the influence cloud growing out of proportion.

So, what are your thoughts?

But I want to pain the entire east our colour! And have Sio crowned High Queen. Aba would be a Jedi Princess. Please!

On a more serious level, while there are some territories I'd like to see annexed in the future (though I'm more into rounding out our shape on the map than spreading tentacles everywhere), some faction threads unrelated to doms would be nice. Could even create an ongoing plotline through one.

[member="Valiens Nantaris"] and I talked about having the completition of the Barsen'Thor take place in a faction thread (one that doesn't consist of a couple people sitting around and debating boring technical stuff). And I've been considering some...mean, ghastly things Archangel could do (Archangel covertly tests a virus in a civilian population centre by using terrorists as patsies, Silvers must investigate and stuff).

Most of the provinces and planets in this rim area are sparsely populated. Size of territory on the map doesn't mean we are a New Republic.

In any case, I feel that Dominions have some clear advantages:
  • They provide a tangible result - control of a planet.
  • They allow faction members to advance their own stories as well as that of the faction.

However, they are limited in two key areas:
  • There is a post-per-member restriction until post 100.
  • It's restricted to being about or connected to one world.

Therefore, it seems logical that we use the two types of threads for things they are best at.

Dominions serve best for military based dev threads, large scale faction stories which are episodic (such as OP did against the Bando Gora) and for general PVE threads.
Faction threads serve best though for social, training and community threads. They also work well for large faction stories which are one-offs or which take place on already owned worlds.

OP's war on the Bando Gora wasn't entirely done in dominions. Had two big faction threads (Harbingers and Marks of Chaos), and a third one that was killed by the wipe. Only two doms were about it (Bespin and Gehenna).

I am not that fond of the arms as well and I could see us using dominion to fill in the gaps.

From Saleucami up to Antaz, to The Wheel across to Galidraan and fill in that circle what will be created. The same between Morellia (to the east) down to Tygara. There are plenty of planets in those circles to fill our needs for Doms without looking like we are land grabbing?

The idea you propose for the faction event is good, I like that. Nice one to start off as we have not done a faction event in ages.

Exactly, and they follow the pattern I outlined above. Where it was possible or desired to advance that plot with acquiring a new planet, we did so. That was also before the post restrictions I believe which made things easier.

On another note, with the Primeval having difficulties I am not certain they will recover from, we should also be looking at a strategy of incorporating dominions into our plan of acquiring Prime territory when and if it becomes available.

Sounds good. I'd like to secure the area around Arkas, Kelsier and Kyrikal. It's our backyard and was partially LS-controlled anyway. Besides, the worlds are fun.

Thanks. Especially if you were to buy Archangel droids first. :D

The Tygaran Alliance will also be doing some threads to develop Tygara more post-exodus. SSC people are welcome to jump in and help. After all, both doms were fun.

Faction plot fighting Primeval insurgents?

[member="Coci Heavenshield"] [member="Siobhan Kerrigan"]

I agree. Since some of our targets will be former Sith worlds we can always come up against the usual collection of cultists, monsters and insurgents which seem to spawn.

I know our allies in the West would want us to make for the One Sith territories. We can't invade them from so far away, but then again the Republic blocks us from advancing anyway. So I say we stick to what we do best for now, and that is minding our own buisness.

I'm all for Dominions, as I don't think we're getting too big or anything, but regular Faction RP's would be a nice change of pace for the reasons Valiens mentioned above. We can basically do what we want and go wherever we want rather than keep to one world and one objective. :)

If the Republic loses Roche to the Mandos, their entire southern tentacle gets cut off. Then we could theoretically invade Onderon if we wanted since the Republic would not be a block anymore.

Siobhan for High Queen!

Emberlene's Daughter, The Jedi Generalist
I am for fun always and most of our dominions have been fun with semi self contained scenarios that have a chance to carry over and are largely uninfluenced by other events on the board. It gives a certain freedom as well we aren't just rushing to take all the high profile planets that everyone knows and wants but rather go at some places we can make things up on and have whatever happens happen.

though I do miss some of the faction events we had.

[member="Coci Heavenshield"] What's wrong with taking over the galaxy? Borrrrrrrrrring.

One day I'll rule the SSC with an iron fist and we will march over the armies of darkness and take over the....

...and then New Connor says.... I agree with Faction Events a little too, but not forsaking Doms at times because they ARE fun and do help keep us strong (and explore new territory), but linking arms together as a Faction in an event will be great for new and old, and they are always good fun. :)
