STRENGTHS
  • Disable, Then Destroy: Lacking conventional blasters entirely, Doomsayers rely on their ion cannons to immobilize their prey and drain their shields. This makes them extremely effective at disabling enemies for boarding actions, allowing the Brotherhood to capture enemy ships to add to their fleet. The fighter-bombers are also excellent Corvette-killers, using their concussion missiles to finish off immobilized enemies. They are highly effective against any starfighters they can catch, though this is less their role, and can contribute to the fight against larger enemy ships by draining their shields with concentrated fire.
  • Sophisticated Weapon Tracking: Doomsayers fly with an additional crewmember, a bombardier, who sits at his own station and operates a separate targeting console. The bombardier feeds a constant stream of targeting information to the pilot and rear gunner, calculating optimal firing solutions for them without distracting them from their other tasks. This results in excellent accuracy for the ion cannons and concussion missiles, giving the Doomsayer crew a chance against faster-moving targets and allowing them to pinpoint particular systems on larger enemy ships to bring down with concussion missiles.
WEAKNESSES
  • Large Profile, Large Crew: Even wider than it is long, the Doomsayer straddles the line between starfighter and light freighter. This makes the fighter-bomber a fairly large target for most fighters and interceptors, which tend to be far smaller and nimbler, and makes it more difficult to dodge anti-fighter countermeasures and enemy turrets. The ship's size and complexity of design also require a larger crew than most ships of its class, with a pilot, rear gunner, and a bombardier required to operate at full capacity. If any of these crewmen are disabled, at least one of the ship's weapons will become inoperable.
  • Limited Weaponry Types: Since the Doomsayer lacks conventional blasters, its only way of dealing permanent damage is its concussion missiles. These are starfighter-grade, and can do only very limited damage to any ship larger than a corvette. Additionally, the missiles take time to reach their targets, making them much easier to dodge than laserfire. While the missiles have some ability to breach shields, they are at peak effectiveness only after the enemy's shields are disabled. This means that Doomsayers really only have one attack pattern: fire ion cannons until the enemy's shields are down, then use missiles.
DESCRIPTION
In the wake of the Battle of Csilla, the Brotherhood of the Maw studied the damage to its fleet and how it had occurred. The Heathen Priests concluded that, while their powerful Star Destroyers were extremely deadly against enemy capital ships, the massive guns fitted on them had fared extremely poorly against small, nimble ships like starfighters and corvettes. This had allowed the assembled enemy fleets to repeatedly slip through their defensive screen using such craft. Solutions were immediately sought, so that the Brotherhood would not suffer similar setbacks in future battles. One such solution was the Doomsayer.

Given the limited number of Divine Eagle-class Starfighters and the heavy toll that Csilla had taken on them and their pilots, a new workhorse starfighter was needed, something effective against multiple types of target. Working in secret in their hidden Deep Core shipyards, Epoch Engineering Corporation created the Doomsayer to be the new, less-costly specialist fighters of the Brotherhood fleet. The bulky gunboat-fighters were designed to be effective against enemy corvettes, transports, and freighters without sacrificing their ability to keep up with enemy starfighters. The result was an odd design, a deconstruction of what a fighter could be.

With four forward-facing, fire-linked ion cannons, a Doomsayer can put out a withering barrage of ion fire, rapidly draining shields and then disabling subsystems. Controlled by the pilot, who must also fly the ship, these guns were deemed by the engineers to be sufficient stress on a single individual. They therefore delegated the twin concussion missile launchers to a bombardier station, which was also tasked with gathering target data and calculating firing solutions to bolster the accuracy of the other weapons. A rear-facing ion cannon turret helps against enemy fighters by arming what would otherwise be the bulky craft's main blind spot.

Because of the craft's large profile, the Doomsayer needed to be armored and shielded more heavily than a smaller, nimbler craft would be. A large reactor powers potent shields in addition to the weapons, and is in turn protected by several overlapping layers of durasteel armor. All of this means that the fighter-bomber is quite heavy, taking up significant hangar space; squadrons must therefore consist of only four of the unusual craft. Oddly, since three crew are required per Doomsayer, the actual number of living beings in each squadron remains around average. Doomsayers work to cover each other, but rely on interceptors against fighter screens.
