Strengths:
- Assault: average defenses, but packing a helluva broadside, the Dreadnought-class excels at offensive operations, from cutting through enemy shields with its ACPs to unleashing a swarm of boarding shuttles.
- No Fighter Complement: the lack of a fighter screen leaves the Mk III vulnerable to small enemy craft.
- Poor Point-Defense Weaponry: the low quantity of point-defense weapons makes the above doubly true.
The Dreadnought-class Mk III is an upgrade of an ancient design from Rendili Star Drive. The initial blueprints were for an escort cruiser capable of going toe-to-toe with larger cruisers and destroyers. Although the firepower of even a single Star Destroyer would vastly outclass the Dreadnought-class Mk III, the engineers expected that the Alliance would be able to field more of the Dreadnoughts at a time. Thus, survivability became the main object. As it is an escort cruiser, the scientists designed the vessel to soak up as much damage as possible in order to divert focus away from mission critical vessels, like logistics ships, EWAR vessels and carriers.
Due to inherent limitations in a vessel of its scale, the engineers decided to swap out a number of turbolaser emplacements in favor of the ACP emitters purchased from Iron Crown Industries. The ACPs are incredibly effective at wearing down enemy shielding, making massed fire from Dreadnoughts a dangerous proposition.
Though lacking a fighter complement, the ability to deploy boarding shuttles is a crucial strength multiplier, allowing the escort cruisers to project and spread force.
