Private Droid Origin Story

Kuhbee, the young Wookiee padawan, grunted in excitement as he sifted through piles of discarded parts. The familiar hum of the Jedi Temple's scrap room echoed around him. He was used to the space, having spent countless hours here, scavenging for anything that might hold potential. Today's mission was clear: he would build a droid—something to help him on his missions, maybe even something that could become a trusty companion. His large hands easily picked through bits of circuitry, old servos, and discarded droid parts. It wasn't just about the droid. It was about testing his skills, his creativity. The Force flowed through him, guiding his decisions. He could feel it—his creation would come to life soon.

He had put a message on the bulletin board of the Temple, asking for any padawan who knew things about droids or had a droid to come help. While Kuhbee was fairly good with tech he was uncertain what all his droid would need. He was also looking to make new friends.

From behind the young wookiee came the warble of a BD droid.

"Bwoo-dweep dwooo-beep beep-vrrt?"

Standing atop some of the various bits of odds and ends was a small, green droid that had tilted its head and was watching Kuhbee dig around through the parts. He was obviously a BD droid, and he hopped across the space towards the Wookiee, careful not to turn himself into scrap as he did so. Shortly after entering and speaking, he was followed by a young padawan, who stopped inside of the door, looking at the wookiee in amazement (first time he'd ever seen one).

"Uh," he said at first. "Oh, Fate asked what you're looking for, exactly. Just in case you can't understand him."

Some people could, and some couldn't. He had a feeling he was going to need Fate's help to understand the wookiee since he didn't speak Shyriiwook himself. Hopefully the wookiee understood basic.

"I'm Caelan, by the way."

Kuhbee watched as the little droid hopped into the scrap pile carefully. It seemed amazed to see the Wookie and Kuhbee wondered if the droid had ever seen one before. He waved at it enthusiastically. The young cub was still so full of energy.

"Oh, Fate asked what you're looking for, exactly. Just in case you can't understand him."

Kuhbee was excited to see the other padawan. He had not met this padawan yet and he loved meeting new people.

[I'm looking for a vocabulator! Trying to build a droid so people can understand me better]

It was true that because he could not speak Basic he felt sort of isolated. He had no tribe and right now only one friend. That was something the youngling really wanted to change.

[I'm Kuhbee]

"Dwoo-beep bwoo-vrrt dwee-dweep device dwoo. Bwee-dwoo bwoo name beep!"

"Ahh," Caelan said, nodding in understanding. "I can't speak your language but I understand what Fate says. So your name is Kuhbee and you're looking for a vocabulator? I think we can help with that."

Fate beeped in agreement and started scanning through the piles of parts. If anyone was going to find what they needed, he was. Fate was excellent at finding things. When they'd first met, Fate had actually tried to kill him due to hijacked programming, but after he'd been fixed, he'd proven pivotal in getting both himself and Grandmaster Noble safely to Hurikane after their transport was destroyed. He'd managed to find what they needed and fix the hyperdrive!

"Fate will find what you need in no time. Just give him a few minutes."

Kuhbee watched as the droid was able to translate what he was saying. This was exactly what he needed in a droid! Fate seemed like a good companion as he started to scan and look for a vocabulator.

[Thank you! Are you a padawan too? I've seen you around the mess halls and the dormitories]

Caelan was hard to miss because he had a certain regal quality that not all the other padawans had.

"Dwoo-beep bwoo-dweep? Vrrt-dwoo bwee-dwoop seen bwoo-beep."

"I am a Padawan, yes," he said after Fate translated for him. "Dreidi Xeraic is my master."

He had seen Kuhbee around. Impossible not to miss the giant furball walking through the temple. But this was his first time actually being close enough to really get a look at him. Gentle giant, really. He was sure the wookiee padawan could rip his arms out of their sockets if he wanted to, but he also didn't think that was something Kuhbee would do. Regardless, he seemed nice enough.

Fate was busy scanning various parts of the pile, looking for the vocabulator. Caelan had no idea what one looked like, so he left it to the droid.

"How long have you been at the temple?"

"How long have you been at the temple?"

Kuhbee watched as the droid continued to scan for the needed part. He was learning that it was very handy to have a droid to help with these things. The young pup was excited to build a droid of his own. He really needed something to translate his language because most beings in the galaxy did not understand it.

[I've been here four months now! I'm training with Master Gil Horn because my old master had to be called away on a dangerous assignment. How about you? How is training going with your master?]

He was excited to be talking to Caelan. Maybe this would turn into a new friendship! Kuhbee was finally starting to make connections and it was feeling nice.

"Bwoo-dweep bwee-dwoop. Vrrt-dwoo bwoo-dweep. Dwooo-beep bwee-dwoo beep-vrrt?"

"I hope your Master will be safe," he said, knowing that dangerous mission was never an understatement. "As for my training, it goes well. I've spent a good deal of time in combat training with my master because my skills are more martial in nature. Fighting is, apparently, what I'm meant to do, even though I'm not a fan of it."

He shrugged. Sometimes you had to do things you didn't like. For him, that meant fighting. Several times now he had ended up in situations which resulted in him crossing blades with others, are throwing fists. It seemed to be a regular thing amongst the Jedi and he was certain that it would happen again, especially with him being a Guardian. Undoubtedly he would end up fighting in some war or other sometime soon. It seemed the Alliance was always embroiled in them and relied heavily on the Jedi to fight them.

"Bwee-dwoo! Dwooo-beep!"

"Fate says he found your vocabulator."

The little droid was dancing wildly in the same spot and using his light to highlight the item.

Kuhbee could understand the notion of not wanting to fight. After his time in the gladiator pits he never wanted to fight again, but he knew that the Jedi were often called to fight. There were three tracks of the Jedi, which he read about in the archives. So far his study had mostly consisted of the training room and archives but he hopped he would go on a mission soon like Caelan had.

[Are you a Guardian?]

"Fate says he found your vocabulator."

Kuhbee roared lightly in happiness and went over to see where the droid was pointing. He dug into the pile and sure enough there was the vocabulalator he needed!

[Thank you Fate!]

He now had all the parts he needed to put his droid together, but he could do that latter. Right now he had met a new padawan friend and he really didn't want to stop talking yet. Caelan was older and he seemed so cool and the young Wookie was already fascinated with learning about him.

[Do you want to go get lunch at the cafeteria? I can put my droid together after!]

Wookies had quit an appetite after all!

"Bwoo-dweep dwoo-vrrt bwee-beep bwoo-woo."

"Yes, I am a Guardian," Caelan affirmed. "Or, at least, I intend to be."

The droid waited patiently for Kuhbee to come over and collect the part and beeped happily at being thanks. If there was one thing Fate really enjoyed it was looking for things. He'd been very helpful at it when Caelan had first met him. They'd almost gotten themselves stranded on a backwater world. If it weren't for the droid finding what they needed, and directing their repairs, he'd probably still be there!

"Bwoo-beep-beep? Dweep-dwoo bwee-vrrt bwoo-dweep-dwo beep-dweet?"

"That would be fine," Caelan said in regards to eating. "I haven't had lunch yet."

The wookiee seemed nice, if excitable, so he didn't mind spending more time with him. There was also some curiosity about what kind of droid he was building. Thus, he stepped back out of the room and waited for Fate and Kuhbee to join him before starting for the cafeteria.

"What kind of food do you like, Kuhbee?"

"What kind of food do you like, Kuhbee?"

[All different kinds! Wookies eat a LOT. We love spicy food and meat. On my home planet we usually cook with a lot of different spices.]

Kuhbee was excited to be getting food with a new friend. They made it to the cafeteria and they got in line. It was around lunch time so there were already a few Jedi heading that way too.

[What do you like to eat?]

He picked up a serving tray and got into line.

"Bwoo-beep bwee-dweep beep-bwoop bwee-bwoo, beep-beep bwoo-bwee. Dweep-dwoop bwoo-beep bwee-dweep?"

"Spicy foods and meat? I like meat, but spice depends on what kind. If it's too hot I'm not that big of a fan."

They got into line and he let Kuhbee go first to make sure the wookiee could get whatever he wanted without delay. Usually smart, he'd heard, to let the wookiee go first, and also to win, but he wasn't really sure why on the last one. Surely they weren't that big of sore losers as an entire species, were they? Either way, he waited patiently and moved down the line with his new friend, not really worried about there being enough food. The cafeteria always had plenty of whatever they wanted.

"I usually go for fish. I like the taste of it and the delicate nature. Plus, with just the right seasoning its delightful."

Kuhbee was filling his tray up with meat and fruit and when Caelan talked about fish the young Wookie decided to get some of that too. As the line moved along he also grabbed some juice and thanked the droid serving all the food. He lead the way over to a large round table and took a seat. There were some other padawans on the other side talking but they didn't seem annoyed as Kuhbee sat down.

[Have you built your own lightsaber yet? I think I get to start mine really soon!]

He filled his plate with fish and veggies. Not over full, but enough for a growing boy. Might as well get a good meal in while he had the chance. He didn't know what his plans would end up being for the afternoon so chances were he wasn't going to have another chance to get to the cafeteria.

"Not yet," he said as he hefted his tray and turned towards the tables. "You?"

Fate was still translating. He made a mental note to learn the wookiee language at some point as he set his tray down at an empty table and sat.
