Zofia Marek

Master and Commander
Intent: To create a specialized beacon designed to both illuminate and 'tag' affected targets on friendly systems
Development Thread: N/A
Manufacturer: Produced by various manufacturers on Ganath, specifications and parameters set by the RGTC, global standardization set by the Ganathan Crown.
Model: N/A
Affiliation: Ganath, Ganathan Military, RGTC
Modularity: N/A
Production: Minor
Material: Alusteel casing, maglock contact face, high-capacity power pack, electronic components
Strengths:
  • Tagged - The Drul Beacon is primarily a tracking device designed to interact with synchronized systems (i.e. Friendly HUD systems). Once attached, the beacon transmits data to any synchronized systems and even labels itself according to whatever the device thinks it is attached to (i.e. Tank, APC, Light Vehicle, Gunship, etc.) based on data recovered from its rather limited and simplistic sensor array. This allows the target to be tracked with accuracy by any friendly system within the beacon's signal range.
  • Never Let Go - The Drul features a maglock plate directly linked to an internal power supply that activated at the moment of impact. This means that outright destruction of the beacon or the removal of the power supply (or the power pack dying out) is the only way to remove the beacon from a metallic target.
Weaknesses:
  • Non-lethal - Though the beacon is fired from any compatible weapon system, the projectile is not designed to be lethal and is, in fact, designed to override the weapon's standard systems for the single shot in order to safely propel itself forward. Short of a point-blank shot to an unprotected head with the beacon, the Drul is entirely non-lethal.
  • Magnets - As the Drul relies on the maglock plate to adhere to surfaces, the beacon will fail to attach to anything designed to thwart maglock technology or targets constructed of non-metallic substances including biological tissue.
  • Technical Difficulties - The Drul is a rather new technological advancement and was not created with the ability to be compatible with previous technology. The Drul is only compatible with submissions that clearly state the weapon can fire the specialized beacon (a note in the special features/abilities section is often sufficient).
Description:

Warfare is often considered the most fertile soil for innovative growth and for the Ganathans, this has never been more true. Studies of recent conflicts and an in depth analysis of the past decade or so of conflict has shown that the military armory maintained by the Ganathan armed forces is greatly lacking in the areas of specialized weaponry for the modern battlefield. In this case, the Drul Beacon fulfills the lessons understood from such meticulous research: information is ammunition. Knowing where your foe is positioned is half the battle and the Drul is designed to aid in that pursuit.

The Drul Beacon is designed to be carried and used by the average soldier and is no larger than a standard projectile. The beacon is loaded into the weapon of choice and compatibility and fired at the target where it adheres via the integrated maglock faceplate. Once attached, the beacon does two things more or less at the same time. First, it uses the simple sensor array to estimate the rough tonnage and density of the target it has attached to, compares that estimate with a rough and simple series of options, and labels itself as one of those options when a rough match is found (tank, APC, gunship, etc.). Second, it starts a signal that is only able to be understood by systems designed to understand the signal given, primarily friendly HUD systems.

The downsides of the weapon are fairly evident, mainly that it is a non-lethal weapon and not designed to be used to actually attack a target directly (though a point blank shot against an enemy with no head protection will often cause lethal or severe head trauma). Another problem with the weapon is that it is designed entirely to function against metallic surfaces and will not adhere to biological tissue and nonmetallic surfaces or materials designed to thwart maglock technology. Lastly, the Drul was technically designed before the finalization of a new, standardized line of small arms for the Ganathan military with the intention that future weapons would be designed to fire the beacon rather than updating or refitting older weapons to fire the Drul. This makes the Drul compatible only with weapons specifically designed to fire the beacon.
