Ducking and Weaving (Aeda)

[member="Valiens Nantaris"]

Bespin was a world of marvels. For one, it had a city that was floating in the sky high up in the clouds. Most imaginatively it was called Cloud City. Whoever had come up with the name deserved a medal for originality. It was probably a miracle that the city had not fallen out of the clouds or been blown up yet. Then again, it would have probably been rebuilt anyway. After all, even Alderaan got better, despite being blown into micro pieces by the death star's super laser.

But against all logic and reason the city still stood tall and proud in the clouds and had become a hub of trade and commerce. Naturally it had also attracted its share of scum and villainy. Luke Skywalker had fought Darth Vader in an epic duel in this very city...and learned that the evil Sith Lord was his father, which had obviously caused daddy issues. Many centuries later the vile and savage Bando Gora had seized control over the city before being purged with fire and sword by an Omega Pyre invasion force led by Siobhan Kerrigan. Along the way a Great Unclean One had gotten a building dropped on it before being bombed from the air.

In this day and age, when war was spreading across the stars like wild fires, things were calmer on Bespin and life continued as normal, seemingly untouched by the violence and misery that plagued so many worlds, even though it was a frontier planet. Most recently Firemane and the Abregado-Rae Guild of Hammers had erected an outpost in the gasuous layers of the planet to mine cortosis, which could somehow be found here. It had been created as a joint venture, though overall control now fell to Firemane since the enigmatic droid HK-36 had vanished from the public eye after a brief term as Iron Lord Protector.

The Iron Knight had described the mining process so well in another place that this one sees fit to quote him: "You see Cortosis forms in the upper layers of Bespin's core and lower atmosphere cloud layers filled with gases poisonous to most organics, it can be found on other planets, of course, but this is rather unique for Bespin. In its raw form it is a very fibrous material, like plant strands, even in its purified form where it can disable lightsabers it is very fragile, it has greater energy dissipating properties, however, making it a very strong defense against energy weapons like blasters and lightsabers but incredibly weak against physical weapons like slugthrowers or swords. And in its raw forms it is explosive when it comes in contact with organic matter, so it is mined only by specialized hover-droids who pulls its strands from clouds and the core, and then bring them up here to the special furnaces we have on the platforms. Here it is either purified or mixed together with Durasteel. Diluting it with Durasteel weakens its anti-energy properties, meaning it cannot disable lightsabers or dissipate bolts just as easily, but it strengthens it against physical attacks, making it quite a nice middle ground as it allows Durasteel to resist lightsaber attacks."

There, now the kiddies shall no longer wallow in ignorance about how cortosis is mined on Bespin, whether they're interested or not. It's a truly fascinating topic, you see!

Through the clouds a sleek shuttle swooped down, being steered towards the mining outpost, which could already be seen in the distance. The platforms that formed the Firemane and ARGH command bases could be seen through the viewport of the craft, as could the large furnace section. Basic defences could be made out in form of anti-aircraft guns and a few turbolaser cannons that aimed into the sky, for though it was not a militarised outpost one could never be too careful. After all, Sith infiltrators were everywhere and besides, you never knew when a rift might be thrown into the fabric of reality and an armada of Celestials would emerge from the netherworld to wipe out all life. The shuttle was a military craft and marked with the colours of the Kaeshana Confederation. Aboard were Grand Seraph [member="Aeda Shaytari"], who could be considered the Grand Master of the Eldorai, and Kaida Taldir, her equally stoic minion. Suffice to say the Eldorai had come to collect. All the appropriate calls had been made, things had been arranged with the Firemane couple and payment rendered.

As the shuttle touched down, Kaida and Aeda emerged. For once Aeda was quite pleased that she was wearing her customary helmet which covered her face.
She was awed by what she saw.

She had obviously left Kaeshana before, she had been exiled for years after all, but she had never seen something so beautiful and so seemingly impossible.

Still, she had appearances to maintain, so she kept her glancing around as minimal as possible and stepped down onto the docking bay. The cold wind whipped at her long cloak, and again she was glad of the insulation of her armour.

“Lead on,” she ordered Kaida in her most stoic voice. Her voice modulator helped here.

Kaida was fine with the stoicism. It's not like she talked much. One got the impression she had an obsession with saying as few things as possible. Much as Siobhan Kerrigan kept hitting on anything that was breathing and female. No, this writer is not well-disposed to either of them at present for some reason. Still Kaida could not help feel impressed by the sight she saw. Truth be told, when she heard about the facility she had wondered about how you would mine cortosis in a gas giant.

The cryomancer had not been part of the Omega Pyre strike force that liberated Cloud City, though she had heard stories from Lavina. Somehow she had the feeling that her sister might have exaggerated a bit! Still, the city, which they had overflown during their trip to the mining base, was a marvel to behold.

Anyhow, as commanded Kaida led the way, making no commentary beyond a simple nod of acknowledgement. As it turned out they were already expected, since a middle-aged, well-dressed human woman, presumably the manager of this facility, was awaiting them at the entrance.

Needless to say there were defences present, in form of automated turrets and Legionnaire-class droid vessels created by ARGH. "Welcome to Bespin, Grand Seraph. I am Chief Administrator Ava Curzon. Countess Kerrigan informed us of your cortosis order. Everything is prepared for you."

“Lead the way, Chief Administrator,” Aeda replied, gesturing ahead to indicate as much.

The news that ‘Countess Kerrigan’ had called ahead did not surprise or cause feelings of scorn like some might feel. Aeda’s views of Siobhan Kerrigan were quite simple; she was a strong, if unpredictable element best to have on one’s side than against. Making a snide comment would not change that for the better.

As they entered the facility they could see vast machines with droids and organics labouring away.
The Grand Seraph’s armour was quite distinctive in the mechanical gloom, but she showed no reaction to the glances she was getting from the organic crew.

[member="Aeda Shaytari"]

Kaida's dislike of 'Countess Kerrigan' was well-known, though she made no snide comment and her expression remained as placid as ever. It was based on a number of factors, some of them valid, whilst others probably said more about her than the Countess. For one it was a massive personality clash. Kaida was reserved, taciturn, perhaps not antisocial but certainly socially awkward, disliked pomp and circumstance, could perhaps be considered a bit bookish and whilst she was neither 'frigid' nor a prude did not flaunt her sexuality. Or hit on anything breathing and female.

She also still harboured some resentment against many aristocrats. Whereas Kerrigan was vain, pompous, inherently selfish, oversexed and overemotional. Then there was the fact that Kaida had lost friends during the First Battle of Gehenna, something she partially blamed on Kerrigan's recklessness and incompetent leadership. The fact that the then-Exarch had been treated as a war hero after the battle just made her more bitter about it, as if Kerrigan had been beaten the Bando Gora on her own. It was perhaps also quite possible that Kaida was jealous of those more well-off than she was. Finally, she distrusted darksiders. While herself not pure as white snow, she dismissed the idea that you could play with dark powers without Nemesis catching up on you.

In any case, Kaida kept her thoughts to herself like a good minion and obediently followed Aeda and the Chief Administrator into the depths of the facility without making any unnecessary comment. She could see vast machines with droid and organic workers labouring away. The outpost was still small, but, as the Administrator would inform them, it was ever growing since Firemane and ARGH were interested in expansion. While her armour stood out less than the one of the Grand Seraph, she did acquire a share of looks from the organic workers and guards they passed on the way, though she showed no reaction to the glances.

"Cortosis is extracted from a vein in the planet's heart by mining droids equipped with repulsorlift engines. Due to the presence of explosive gasses near the vein and the properties of cortosis, we do not send organics down there," the Administrator informed them.

Apparently it was also her job to be an info dump. Or perhaps this writer sees this monologue as necessary to make this post a bit more dev thready. "Over there is the main processing centre. Cortosis ore is brought there from the metal core and processed into something workable. Recently we added two furnaces and additional landing platforms to each for mining droids and cargo transports."

She led them on through the large but somewhat claustophobic corridors of the facility, in this case the Firemane administrative building. Both Firemane and the Guild Hammers maintained administrative complexes for resource management, auxiliary processing plants, branching out into larger platforms for shipping and receiving. Obviously these days this was a bit of a formality and things might become more streamlined because the Guild of Hammers had become a Firemane subsidiary, though this merger had come with legal clauses that for instance prevented the Firemane owners from selling the company. In any case, the Chief Administrator would eventually lead the two Eldorai to her office, where the formalities could be discussed, papers signed and so on.

Aeda was a fairly pragmatic sort really. She had relatively little interest or skill with the mechanics of the matter. She didn't really mind where the cortosis came from, so long as it was ready.
When the Administrator pointed out certain sights the Grand Seraph obediently glanced in that direction for a moment.
However, no answer was forthcoming, so they stepped into the office.

"We are here for twenty units of cortosis," Aeda stated as nicely as she could. These 'units' were a convenient means for this writer to overlook the fact he had no idea how much was being obtained or how much would be needed. Still, it seemed to work.
"Of course, Grand Seraph. We have the documents here."
Aeda took the form, glanced it over and passed it to Kaida. "All well?" she asked her subordinate/advisor. She'd seen nothing out of the ordinary, but she wasn't so prideful that she couldn't get a second opinion.

Likewise Kaida was not particularly interested in the fascinating question where the cortosis came from and how it was mined. Sure she might be a bit bookish, but she was not that geeky. Nonetheless she glanced politely at the sights as they were pointed out but made no comment.

When one thought about it, Aeda and Kaida fit well together in their stoicism! So Kaida spent the brief conversation being all stoic and stuff, something she could do rather well by now until Aeda passed the documents over to her. It was always nice when minions got to express their opinion on things. A good deal of the documents was written in complicated legalese that from Kaida's perspective was supposed to confuse the potential buyer, then there was plenty of technical stuff, but she understood enough whilst she looked through the papers. Apparently Firemane was not trying to cheat them. "It seems in order, ma'am," she responded, handing the documents back over.

“Good. I would not have expected anything to be amiss, unless there were…miscommunications,” Aeda commented, glancing at the administrator. The blank mask held the other woman’s gaze a moment before she looked away.
“Excellent, let us get this material loaded up, and we can be going. Is there anything more?” she asked the room in general.

[member="Aeda Shaytari"]

The calm tone and the blank mask was...just a bit unnerving for the administrator, who shook her head. For her part Kaida was stoic and quiet. She was good at that sort of thing.

"No, Grand Seraph. We merely require payment to be wired to our account. Beyond that the cortosis is yours. It's stored in warehouse three. We can have it loaded up for you right away. You may check the shipment first if you wish," the administrator replied smoothly.

In the interest of moving things forward, the payment details were handled smoothly and the necessary amount of credits transferred to Firemane's account. With these details out of the way, Kaida and Aeda would be led out of the office and to the warehouse in question, where the cortosis units were being prepared to be loaded up. Presumably there was some way to inspect the cortosis, such as through a specialised droid or some sort of scanning device, so they would find that everything was in order and no one was trying to sell them inferior cortosis.

Mundane activities were thus done. Scans were made, money was transferred, crates were inspected. Or rather, Kaida directed droids and others to do all that, whilst Aeda stayed back and oversaw proceedings. She was, after all, the leader of the Angelii. It might not be as powerful or famous as the Jedi Grandmaster (though the turnover at least was less extreme) but it was a position of importance!

And so she watched as people and droids did their things, and Aeda could look out at the lovely sky without anyone noticing she wasn’t paying much attention. Sometimes masks did have advantages!

[member="Aeda Shaytari"]

Being the Grand Master of the Jedi Order was a very thankless job. First people expected you to go out and purge Sith, so you went and did that. Sometimes this unfortunately led to people accusing you of abetting war crimes and being an imperialist, fundamentalist warmonger. So you tried to give peace a chance...and then people accused you of being soft on evil. Needless to say, it was understandable if you were frustrated and felt like quitting, decoupling the Jedi from the Republic so that they could found a Rebellion or turning Sith.

Anyhow, scans were made, money was transferred, crates inspected and then loaded up on the Angelii's ship. By the time this was done Firemane had made a not exactly defined but probably very substantial amount of money. Presumably some of it would be invested in actual company development instead of merely paying for Siobhan Kerrigan's ever-expanding shoe collection. After all, who knew, there might be an Apocalypse around the corner. As for the Angelii, they had acquired lots of cortosis to use for a tech sub.

So after Kaida had notified her boss that all was done, the shuttle would lift into the sky and take off. As nice as it would have been to go sightseeing in the magnificient city in the clouds, they had some actual work to do. You know, dev thready things.

And so off the Eldorai pair went. Their development of the armour could wait however, as at that moment a new and monumental ship was being constructed which would soon take priority….

Segway into the Liorre thread….

[member="Aeda Shaytari"]

This writer has already noted that they find these impromptu brainstorming sessions that normally characterise dev threads rather unrealistic. For one, neither Aeda nor Kaida were armoursmiths, though they presumably would know what sort of armour made sense. However, in all likelihood details about the design would be hashed out in advance a long time before you acquired restricted materiels such as cortosis.

In any case, their shuttle would soon dock on their ship, which was a small, nimble corvette that would immediately set sail for Kaeshana, with the cortosis being stored under heavy guard. The Angelii had armoursmiths of their own and had in addition to that also hired some experts from the ARGH who were more familiar with the properties of cortosis than they were. Now all that was left was the design, whenever they got to that, and so they left the magnificient Cloud City behind them. As for the new and monumental ship, it would be magnificient...and perhaps the key to everything. Such as surviving random apocalypses tha seemed to periodically break out every couple months.

And so off they went. Since these two are hardly the sort to 'chew the fat' regarding design - they had researchers for that - we shall skip ahead several weeks to when the first suits of armour were developed, and just in time, as there was disturbing news.

A messenger appeared at Kaida's quarters, knocked on the door.
"Lady Seraph, the Grand Seraph requests your presence. There are grim tidings."
There was always grim tidings.

[member="Aeda Shaytari"]

There was always grim disturbing news. In fact, a couple hours hence there would be an Apocalypse and billions of people would randomly disappear...for some reason.

In any case Kaida gave the messenger a laconic nod. "Just a moment," she put the book away she had been reading and dressed herself appropriately. Then she stepped out of her quarters and was led by the messenger to the room that held the Grand Seraph. Kaida had been spending her time at the Citadel that contained the Angelii barracks, so it was not a long trip.

When she was there she saluted the Eldorai Grand Master in the standard way, right fist over her heart. "Here as ordered, Grand Seraph. I was told there's bad news." She did not enquire for more because Aeda would tell her what was going on anyway. Presumably it would involve the need to shoot bad people. Hopefully it was not Sith with teleportation powers.

The Grand Seraph beckoned her in. She was wearing a hooded robe which concealed her face and her usual mask.
"Thank you for coming, Seraph. Though it seems grim news is our forte lately, this one is slightly less universal in its threat. It is, however, dangerous. For the last year there have been raids by Dark Eldorai, growing in intensity, on the far southern coasts. They attack seaborne commerce, especially oil and mining ships coming from the mountains. They use a mix of submarines and surface craft. They strike without warning and then flee. The High Captain in charge of security in that region has been assuring everyone that the situation is under control. It is not. Kaida, you will go there, you will find these terrorists and you will destroy them. I will give you the authority to override the High Captain in order to requisition ships and soldiers - but use it sparingly. Captain Lintair, an Angelii assigned to that region, will assist you. Any questions?"

[member="Aeda Shaytari"]

The name 'Dark Eldorai' conjured up images of violent elf terrorists, who practiced the dark arts, were hellbent on impaling any human monkeigh they could find and were determined to drag Kaeshana back into the dark days of ignorance, xenophobia and genocidal, religious fanaticms. At least that was the image the government liked to portray. The truth was considerably more complex.

'Dark Eldorai' was a catch-all phrase for insurrectionist groups that wanted to overthrow the Star Queen and implement a 'pure' government for the Eldorai. Whatever that was supposed to mean was a matter of dispute, even amongst the insurgents, who comprised a myriad of different and competing groups under a broad general banner. Some wanted a xenophobic theoocracy, some a military junta, some wanted equal male rights, others again a democratic republic. Others again wanted to replace the House of Venari with the House of Evora, believing that Anya's mother Tirathana the Sixth had seized the throne illegitimately. However, they were all lumped together as Dark Eldorai, a name which automatically prejudiced opinion.

Strictly speaking, all the exiles like Kaida, Aeda and Anya had been labelled as Dark Eldorai at one point or the other for having transgressed against the ancien régime. This was a fact Kaida was well-aware of. It produced a certain awkwardness. However, she had fought the insurgents when they rose up in rebellion many years ago and would do so again. It was true that several of them had honourable motives and she could even find sympathy with some of their political demands, but many had degenerated into being terrorists. Never mind the fact that they could not even make up their mind about what their agenda was. Better a flawed regime that was showing some inclination towards gradual reform than anarchy.

So she simply nodded and made no comment. "I understand, ma'am. Do we have any information about enemy strength, their numbers and weapons? Are there any Sciians among them?" Even though the more traditionalist among the Dark Eldorai disdained foreign influence, they had been forced to adapt to their technology just like the loyalists had done. There were even rumours that some Dark Eldorai groups had attracted foreign fighters. In most cases these were just mercenaries, though some idealistic fools had joined the 'republican' Dark Eldorai in the belief that they were fighting against tyranny.

As for Sciians, a number of Angelii had joined the coup against Silaqui. Most had been slaughtered, but some had escaped and while the Eldorai government kept a tight watch on its force-users, there were those who slipped through the cracks and joined the rebels.
