STRENGTHS
  • Density: Thanks to its' low density the Duramyne material is typically perceived as being very light when held or worn and it is quite flexible as a result, encouraging its' use in techsuits and lightweight products that can be worn in conjunction with clothing, or rather the material can be used as a clothing itself albeit noticeably heavier than typical fabrics and clothing materials.
  • Strength-to-weight: Duramyne possesses an unusually strong ultimate tensile strength-to-weight ratio and by this metric is approximately five times stronger than steel, it can successfully withstand high energy kinetic impacts and deform safely without losing its' molecular integrity and return to its' shape readily. This property along with its lightweight as a Para-aramid synthetic fibre makes it an ideal candidate for protective equipment and even armor. 2-6mm of Duramyne can withstand approximately 1,600-2,078 joules of kinetic energy meaning it could be considered slugthrower resistant.
WEAKNESSES
  • Disintegration: The material doesn't undergo the kind of plastic deformation that results in melting, rather when the material receives a significant amount of thermal energy the bonds holding the fibers together unravels and they disintegrate, it's important that the fibers be kept cool and insulated from extreme thermal radiation such as the kind created by energy weapons and some environmental hazards created by geothermal activity lest fibers begins disintegrating.
  • Thermal instability: While the material could be considered to resist elemental threats the resistance is not equal on both sides of the thermometer. Duramyne can maintain its' grain and molecular structure in addition to flexibility all the way down to sub-zero temperatures. The same cannot be said for thermal radiation, despite being broadly considered as flame-retardant and heat-resistant Duramyne when exposed to high temperatures of approximately 160 degrees celsius (320 degrees farenheit) it'll lose 10-20% of its' ultimate tensile strength over 500 hours while exposure to 260 degrees celsius (500 degrees fahrenheit) for 70 hours reduces its' tensile strength by 50% as the bonds holding the fibers together unravel. When used as part of armor its' important to create a solution for cooling or else personnel wearing it could find the protective qualities compromised.
  • Ionizing Radiation: Though it is sufficiently dense to block alpha and beta particles Duramyne doesn't even come close to the requisite density to shield from powerful gamma energy, meaning that on its' own when used in an armor application it isn't dense enough alone to protect its' wearer from radio-logical threats.
DESCRIPTION

Duramyne is a heat-resistant and flame retardant plastic-reinforced synthetic fiber developed and manufactured by the Unified Gwerin Ecumene, its' development history started prior to the Coalition-Commune war with the proliferation of slugthrower weapons due to their relative ease of manufacture and upkeep when compared to emerging energy weapon technologies. Duramyne was developed of a period of about eighteen years and was first used commercially and militarily by the Unified Gwerin Ecumene's United Systems Space Administration and proved to be extremely effective against the slugthrower weapons it had been designed to defeat. Additionally, Duramyne found use in industrial, commercial and high-performance sporting products among the Ecumene's citizens such was its' material and mechanical properties.

It has good insulation properties and cannot be considered a good candidate for electrical or thermal conductivity, additionally Duramyne features excellent abrasion, cut and slash resistance. Duramyne is extraordinarily resistant to the cold and maintains integrity, grain structure and flexibility even at sub-zero temperatures making it an excellent candidate as a material for use in cryogenic technologies, Among the secrets behind Duramyne's production and development is that the Unified Gwerin Ecumene as they do with useful technology reverse-engineered and improved it from alien samples discovered aboard a derelict warship prior to the years before the Coalition-Commune war. One of Duramyne's many virtues is its' ability to be used to reinforce other composite materials and can be reinforced with carbon-based or glass-based fibers for a variety of applications, the resulting composite is referred to as a "Duramyne-based composite".
