Commenor
Chasin City Hospital

It had been two weeks since Avalore left this place immediately following the fall of Manaan into the hands of the One Sith. In an effort to save lives, Commenor offered its fleet resources to remove as many people from Manaan as possible, and in that effort had taken in thousands of evacuated refugees. Hundreds of which had suffered injuries and wounds.

Avalore had never seen so much blood in her life, and she'd likely seen enough to last her two lifetimes. She recalled this with terrible clarity as the Republic transport filled with hopeful Jedi Padawans and two hopeful Jedi Masters wanting to learn how to help, how to heal, slowly settled down on the landing pad outside of Chasin Hospital.

The local agencies were expecting them, had pleaded for the Order to send more aid. This little ragtag group was all she'd managed to muster, but Avalore now had a renewed sense of faith all thanks to [member="Hal Terrano"]. With any luck, there would be a decent number of patients needing minor Healing that she could use to teach on - this was the ideal situation in her mind, though what reality would give them was anyone's guess. Even one so inept at feeling things along the Force as she could tell that the cloud of pain, fear, and despair was still quite thick and grey around this place.

Avalore took a slow, calming breath as she turned to the others on the transport, "We've arrived," she began, swallowing sharply and clearing her throat, "you've all been meditating during the journey here, cleansing yourself of fear, doubt and uncertainty. Remember that these three things will be your largest challenge when facing those who need your help. Is everyone ready? Does anyone have any questions before we set in? I'll be taking you to a conference hall before we begin any formal training."

One thing Uri knew was the more time he spent on ships and shuttles the more he began to detest them. Unbarable and unnatural noise that disrupted his meditation but still Uri spent most of the time in deep meditation to get away from the racket. It was what he considered to be his stongest skill thanks to his training in the Monastery at Agamar. Still even after meditation, it worried him slightly what suffering he might see but he did what he was instructed to do and held to one truth: He will not have the ability to help those that need him if he is not able to help himself first. He contemplated if he might be too young for this. Evidently, not if he is already here.

His attention left his thought, when he began to hear Master [member="Avalore Eden"] speak. He listened intently to her words taking them in. The worry left him as she spoke. This is what he wanted more than anything. To help those that need him.

Closed eyes, he breathed calmly as he allowed his mind to focus on calming his nerves. Building his own resistance, a way for himself to remain calm and collective. Oukaze enjoyed the meditation a tad, it was something Ryuu had as well agreed with. Releasing, containing, and reassessing and focusing, all things Oukaze fervently doing so to become ready. To become useful Oukaze thought, slowly opening his eyes, his fingers pulling on one another's glove down as he turned his head to face the Jedi Master that had allowed him and the rest of the other students to accompany her. Slightly satisfied, Oukaze felt sure he could move through a torrent of emotions and distress without feeling too pressured or distracted.

Nodding to mostly himself he understood how connected the Force would make people, how much of the pain and emotions Oukaze would no doubt feel upon entering the hospital. Perhaps that was also the reason Ryuu had decided to join and not distract themselves from the meditation. Oukaze knew that fear, doubt and uncertainty would be his undoing if his own resolve would slip and his determination fall off over the edge. Refocus and rekindle your passion was the thought that echoed through his mind, and for a split moment Oukaze wasn't sure if it came from himself.

Standing up he refocused his eyes to target his hands, removing his gloves he looked back up. His right hand placing his gloves inside his coat as his free hand straightened his tie. He looked at the other student present, a young boy that was well. . . gold, in all sense of the word, he turned his attention back to himself. Waiting for a moment for their master [member="Avalore Eden"] , Oukaze ran his no longer gloved fingers through his hair. He was now certain he was ready, remembering his past promise, reinforcing his determination and mind, he was ready.

as the shuttle came to a stop after hours of traveling, and the lights at the back of the shuttle flicked on instantly becoming to bright for Sanya. it's not that she didn't like been in light it's just that it was a strain on her eyes. Sanya pulled her hood over her head and stood up, she checked her stuff to make sure she had the right equipment like bandages and kolto injections. this was sanya's place and the reason one of the reasons she joined the Jedi. from a young age she has been teaching herself in the arts of medicine, helping those in the slums who could afford medical treatment. she was fully confident about this task unlike the war at manaan that just turned into a nightmare that no one should endure.

this gave the chance for Sanya to learn the basics of force heal, at least it should be easier on her master with the basics out the way it means they'd be able to focus on the more advance teachings. "I have a question" Sanya said with a loud clear voice "what will be the worse injuries we will be dealing with?"

“Nothing we can’t all handle together, young one.” Kana left the ship by the boarding ramp and spoke to Sanya. “I am certain Master Eden wouldn’t bring us here unless she thought we’d be able to help.”

Speaking of which… Had they ever seen each other? Kana was fairly certain she had never seen [member="Avalore Eden"] before. In any case it was good to make an acquaintance out of one of the few remaining healers. Someday soon Kana would count herself amongst them. Maybe not quite yet, but soon she would and when that day came she could rest easy knowing she had managed to do something good with her life.

“It’s an honor to finally meet you Master Eden.” Kana bowed. “I’m Kana Truden.”

Introductions sucked. Kana always made herself seem like some sort of stuck up superior. Not that she wasn’t, but to have it actually broadcast to people was horrible.

She had an academic rep to represent after all… Or something like that.

As Corvus exited her Meditation, she considered the fact she’d never been to Chasin City, or Commenor for that matter – but the historian in her knew it was a former ally of Corellia, so she was at least aware of it.

And she mused that she had never considered a Jedi Healer to be a career option, but then she’d never thought she’d have been active in as many Invasions either. Although she was not truly cut out for the role of a Healer, her rudimentary skills in the subject were in need of development. On the front line, a field medic was always of use – even if they used the Force rather than a bacta pack to help the wounded.

A former Padawan and Master Alince had taught her what she knew thus far – but reports of the injuries they would see meant she instinctively knew that her knowledge was not enough. She came to help and suspected that she’d need some guidance herself before she was in a position to best aid the others.

And on the plus side she wasn’t alone. Many familiar faces surrounded her – plus of course the Chief Healer, who spoke as the transport neared its final destination. So she listened and waited to hear if anyone had any questions.

OOC - There's a lot of us tagged for this thread and I'm happy to see the turn out thus far! I will be moving this thread along at a decent pace. If you get skipped, don't take it personally, I will be assuming that you're simply following along and you can write yourself in where the situation applies. Late arrivals just assuming you've been following the group!

With the single question raised now answered by one of the attending Masters, Avalore wasted no time in disembarking the transport. She waited a few moments for everyone else to follow before offering a faint smile to [member="Kana Truden"] in return to her greeting.

"Hello Ka-" whoops, let's not have propriety slip out the front door in front of all the Padd-o's, Avalore, "-Master Truden, I'm glad to have you and Master Raaf here today. I understand both of you have a little bit of Healer's training, so don't mind me if I cover things you already know and feel free to help out where you see fit to your knowledge level."

A short nod was given to [member="Corvus Raaf"], a fellow Master she'd only worked with a few times before. Counting heads, the Chief Healer then lead the way into the Hospital proper where the group was greeted by the buzzing hive of an over-filled and likely under-staffed foyer. She spoke shortly with a receptionist who apologized that their contact, Dr. Pryde, was unable to conduct the lesson tour with them today - he'd entered into a long and difficult surgery on a new patient.

"But I'll have one of the Nurses join you ...as soon as I have one available. The conference room you requested is just down the hall and to the right, the last door. It's not empty, I'm afraid, but there's room for you to work."

Avalore thanked her then and lead the group to their next destination: the Conference Room.

Though normally a large and spacious area, it had now been repurposed as a sleep-in for the staff, many of whom had likely not seen their own home for several days. Cots were lined up in rows, several of which occupied by sleeping people. An exhausted looking Nurse greeted them as they arrived and pointed Avalore off to the side where an area remained clear for them to leave their things and discuss the lesson. A dozen or so empty cots sat off to the side, a large conference table greeted them with a stack of datapads detailing the hospital's layout and an attendance list of the staff, including Doctors and Nurses, with accompanying pictures for ease of recognition.

"You may pick a cot and set your things down. It's likely we will be here for a few days," Avalore began quietly, "everyone take a datapad, it will have the hospital map and a look-book of the staff inside. You can also use them to keep notes while you're working. Before we begin I have a short lecture to give, so have a seat when you're all settled."

Eyes turned towards another voice as Oukaze wondered as well the extent of the injuries they would be dealing with and learning to heal. Oukaze followed behind the young woman that had asked the question of the extent of injuries as well as quickly focused on the other woman that had answered. Narrowing his eyes slightly in curiosity he listened to her answer, agreeing with the logic behind it as he continued to walk down the ramp. He felt their strong presence, he wasn't alone with a single Master but he was in company with several Masters of the force. Eyes widening he wondered what extent the wounded in the hospital were, or rather the amount of wounded.

Oukaze continued to walk, I do not like this place Ryuu thought as Oukaze nodded once in agreement with that thought. Stretching and allowing his own senses out would not be needed to feel the sheer weight of emotions this hospital contained. Maintaining his graceful walk he quickly eyed the conference room, searching with his curious gaze. Upon being asked to find a cot Oukaze quickly picked the one closer to the wall as he sat down for a moment.

Hands reaching down and grabbing the datapad he quickly went over the information given, not so much reading it but glancing and knowing what was held on the datapad. Oukaze though closed his eyes as he started to refocus and rebuild his mettle, he was certain he would need as much strength to handle the stress of the emotions to come. Tough, we never got to hang out with others huh? Ryuu asked, Oukaze frowned, "Who's fault was that?" Oukaze muttered the question in a quiet voice. Oukaze quickly glanced back up to see if anybody heard him talk to himself. Remember last time we did? Ryuu countered, and to his surprise Oukaze ignored the question.

His attention returned back to Master Eden, his eyes focused and his mind ready. "How does Healing through the Force differ from other medical means or rather perform? I ask this because I assume we will be dealing with an assortment of species and humanoids and some require radically different care and foreknowledge on how to heal and fix than the others," Oukaze asked, his medical knowledge centered on humans.

Uri followed the group on to the conference room noticing how the room had been repurposed for a bunk house. The scene reminded him of his monastery in away. He and the other monks all slept in one large room on bed rolls. He convinced himself that this was similar to what he knew then even though it clearly wasn't. Still he kept his emotions pure with the thought of being helpful to those who are sick and injured. He placed his gear down of the bed across from the white haired boy and grabbed a datapad despite never touching one before in his life. He hit buttons and pecked at it. His mouth twisting to one side as he tried to figure it out. He glanced up as he could have swore he heard the white hair Padawan in front of him speak. Uri glanced back down at the datapad when he raised his eyes to Uri's. Uri waved it of as the guy was simply going over what was on the datapad which he still had no idea how to use himself. He exhaled lightly and clicked his tongue as he pressed his lips out looking at himself in the reflection rather than confusing himself more with box of bolts in his hands.

Corvus filed in with the rest of the group. She bowed politely to Master Eden – who she knew more my reputation than anything else and gravitated towards Kana – as was usually the case. Except this was not a time for banter.

The hospital was busy – which was to be expected and she waited in line as Avalore organised where they were going and then followed down the sterile corridors to what was grandly named the Conference Room. What greeted her eyes, however was the sight of cots and what appeared to be doctors and nurses grabbing whatever sleep the hustle and bustle of the room afforded.

Simply choosing the closest cot and nodding to the one next to it and then looking at Kana, Corvus put her bag down and grabbed a datapad. She immediately took a seat at the back of the chairs available and started to commit the information presented to memory, floor layouts, doctor’s names, nurse’s pictures – with one ear focused on Master Eden, waiting for her to speak.

She looked around. Closeted away on Ossus, she saw hardship in times of battle but once it was over she could return to the peace and tranquillity of her own room – her greatest worry being who would take the Younglings for a class in Jedi Lore. Here was the real world – one she’d seen precious little of for the past fifteen years. It was...humbling.

"Force Healing has a much broader scope of effectiveness when compared to standard medical means," Avalore began, recalling this very lecture given to her by an old Healer back on Corellia. Back when Mark Starkiller had been her Master. Back before she'd even come to learn she was harboring a new life within her.

Avalore realized this and paused, taking a short moment to look around and comprehend just how much time had passed and how much things had changed. She pushed down the resurgence of emotions connected to those times, cleared her throat, and pressed on.

"It is upwards of 92% effective across races throughout the galaxy, omitting those who are immune to effects of the Force. The breadth of Healing with the Force includes not just wounds of the flesh, but also that of sickness, poison, disease, and even mental and emotional injuries. It is one of the most diverse powers, but also one of the most difficult to Master. Though it comes in many forms and, yes, even the Sith have their own methods, it is deeply linked to the wielder's mental and emotional state and their own energies. It takes years, decades even in some cases, to build the fortitude and the mindset needed to use these powers unhindered. Even I still have difficulty and struggle with it."

"Modern medecines in all their forms - scientific, natural, holistic - have proven to be effective alternatives in the majority of cases. Many times a Healer's job may consist only of prepping a patient, easing pain, or fixing injuries that might not be readily handled by doctors and medical care alone. Other times there are wounds so deep, so great, that only a Master Healer has any chance of helping. In the end, having a basic understanding of Healing as well as basic medical knowledge, which is what you will learn and practice over the next few days, will prove to be a vital tool within your skillsets and make you invaluable to your fellow Jedi and people everywhere in the days to come. Healers have become scarce. Too scarce for the war that wages today."

Branimir sat and listened in silence, after putting his rucksack on a bed. This was a good and worthy thing they set out to do. Though he knew there would be much pain and heartache, he was glad to be here. He had already accepted that not all would be saved, but knew that with the will of the Force, more would be saved than would have otherwise. This was right and correct. This was serving life. This was what Jedi were for.

He glanced around at his fellows, and knew that if there was one thing he would truly have to work at it would be his ability to work as a team. His own personal preferences could not be taken into account, lives might depend on how well he could mesh with these others. Against that, what did it matter if it made him uncomfortable? Emotions were fleeting.

He quietly rose and moved to sit next to a young boy, [member="Uri Aureleos"]. Without saying a word, he very slowly, and at an angle the boy could see, began to access the most basic and necessary information on the datapad, starting with the hospital layout.

Later, though he doubted there would be much downtime, he would start using it to educate himself on beings physiology, as quickly as he could. He knew humans at least roughly, but he didn't know as much as a medical student would. And even near humans could have significant differences, let alone the completely alien sentient races. If it was required to be the best healer he could be though, he would learn it. That was all there was to it.

“Oh, absolutely. Repeat away.” Kana smiled back at Avalore as Corvus approached.

It wasn’t until they walked along the busy hospital that she felt truly… At home. It was a very weird kind of warmth. It was a place that if the right man -- or woman -- knew what to do they could be invaluable to the people who needed them and really, that was all Kana wanted to feel. As if she belonged.

Kana remained standing as Corvus took a seat. If there was one thing she would be counting on it would be that they would be sitting on the ground meditating or similar soon enough and if they didn’t… Then, damn, she’d have to tackle that when they got there.

She waited for Avalore to finish. Something had Kana wondering...

“So let’s say we apply something like bacta as well as use the force to heal a wound. Are there any added benefits to such methods or do they cancel each other out?”

Sanya turned her head towards Kara while she asked her question, it was a very basic question but a good one. "the bacta would certainly help with the recovery, but the force healing aspect would deal with most of the injuries faster. think of it like this the bacta is your anaesthetic and the force heal would be like the thread and needles." it was the easiest way to explain things from her point of view.

Corvus listened to Avalore as she spoke. Already a legend for turning down the Master rank when offered it the first time, her prowess as a healer was unparalleled.

She reflected on the work she’d done with Kian and Kana helping the Younglings who had been affected by the One Sith. Her few attempts at healing during battles - closing wounds but little more. So the depth of ailments a healer could treat were truly inspiring. She could see why Kana saw it is a vocation. It was such a meaningful use of the Force.

But although Corvus had no inclination to be a Master Healer, whatever she could do would make a difference. And it wasn’t as if she was the sort to shun learning new techniques.

Uri was a little startled when the man sat down beside him that he nearly jumped out of his skin. Uri didn't expect him to sit beside him and he wasn't exactly paying attention to people around him. He mainly only listened as Master Eden spoke and others asked questions. Uri glanced up at Branimir for a second then back down at the datapad as he cycled through the information. He took in as much as possible then lifted his own datapad using Branimir's example to help teach Uri how to use it. Uri's confidence began to grow in the moment. This is what he really wanted. He wished to help people.

"Padawan Lerium is correct," Avalore responded with a nod, "Bacta is a wonderful tool and aid for Healers, and a nothing short of a necessity for those who intend to pursue this skill as their Jedi Career. While Healing powers are certainly more effective and faster than Bacta, it is very important to remember that your Healing efforts are given in balance with the severity of that which you heal. Small scrapes, minor burns and cuts - these are all rather simple things to fix and an experienced Healer should have little trouble handling a multitude of those sorts of cases."

Avalore moved to walk around the table, "However, major lacerations, deep-tissue damage, 3rd degree burns, broken bones, ruptured organs, major trauma - all of these things are exceedingly taxing on a Healer's own energy reserve. This is where things like Kolto and Bacta come into play. As a Healer, it is your responsibility to know, absolutely, your own limits. When you reach them, and push past them, you stand a far greater chance of not only harming yourself, but doing more damage to the patient. When faced with major injuries and wounds, using the Force to pull your patient out of that critical state, to keep them from bleeding out, to set a broken bone or stitch back together a ruptured organ ... it's a bit like priming the wound for standard medical care, so that things like Bacta and Kolto can be applied to do the rest of the work, and then work better and faster. Does this make sense?"

[member="Corvus Raaf"] [member="Kana Truden"] [member="Uri Aureleos"] [member="Sanya Val Lerium"] [member="Branimir"] [member="Oukaze Ryuu"]

There was a part of Branimir that immediately and deeply rejected the idea that one could give too much. But he was not a creature who depended upon snap judgements unless he had to, so he stopped and thought about [member="Avalore Eden"]'s words. After a moment he conceded that she was correct. The danger as he saw it was not in the possible damage to himself. It wasn't even that he might exacerbate the existing situation. To lose a patient would be a tragedy, but if they were in dire straights already, if they would die on their own, then any accidental damage caused while trying to help could be taken as a necessary risk and an acceptable if distasteful outcome. The real problem, particularly in this setting, was that to burn out on one patient, successfully or otherwise, was to deny care to how many more? Rationing and triage were necessary to save as many as possible. In this way the Force was like any other resource. Ideally there was enough to go around, realistically there was not.

This was a rather important revelation for the aspiring healer. He'd assumed, even with all his reading, perhaps because of all his reading, that the Force was the be all and end all for a Jedi Healer. That it was used to heal from start to finish. Instead it was a stabilizer, allowing more mundane methods the time they needed to work. Interesting!

Seeing that the boy beside him seemed to have the basics down, the man began moving quicker, fingers flicking as he checked things that he suddenly wanted, needed, had to know. He had to preform his job to an acceptable standard. Suddenly it wasn't all about the Force, he needed to understand medical procedures and equipment. To think he'd believed he'd only need to have study sessions on biology!

[member="Avalore Eden"]

One's own self, one's own strength and will, that was what it took to heal others through the force. Substantial amount of effort and Oukaze clasped his hands together, no doubt he figured it took someone strong willed and determined to move and learn deeper in the arts of Force Healing. Emotions of distress and pain, anguish and the likes all fill up the mind as the Healer tries to calm down the waves of emotions that crash against their own barriers they built up in their minds. And hearts, to protect themselves. Oukaze glanced for a moment, to the others, they each radiated a sense of calmness, serenity, perhaps Oukaze would learn to anchor himself to their aura if need be, if he would ever need.

Precision was his goal, Oukaze understood how to become immaculate with his work and practice of medicine. Though he found the description of Force Healing a tad like a simple band-aid, the deeper level of Force and its healing arts no doubt would require much many more hours to hone carefully and years more to master. He smiled sadly as he looked at his fingers, his mind understanding of his limits. Well ain't you a bleeding heart Ryuu thought, a tad sarcastic but Oukaze felt his boredom drift as he refocused his attention back to his Master. Her lecture continued and felt ready for the hands on training that would soon come afterwards. Making his right hand free he combed through his white hair as he listened.

He knew how to work several of the machines in the hospital, applied bacta and even shared a few exercise and practice with Kolto. Oukaze himself preferred Bacta as that substance has been created to function so widely in much of the current medicine used in most hospitals. His hands eagerly tapped one another, he wished to once more work on those machines, it had been such a stretch time of since he last used them in actual practice. Fluid work, let each procedure flow flawlessly between one another, as a river of healing, from my own Force ability to my Medical Knowledge Oukaze hummed to himself, assuring Ryuu would leave him be for the time being. "Who would be begin to take practice as well as when will we begin our training?" Oukaze asked, his hands falling towards his sides as he spoke.

"Traditionally," Avalore began, hearing movement and chatter at the entrance of the conference room, "you would spend weeks practicing meditation, observing Medics, Nurses, and Doctors in their jobs, help them where you can, listen and learn. But necessity calls for a bit more of crash course,"

War didn't wait for things like tradition. It trampled it and burned it to the ground. There wasn't time for weeks of learning and observing and helping.

"learning through doing. Now the most important things to remember are that we are here to help, not to replace the people who have already spent their lives learning and practicing their own jobs. We'll be starting in the east wing, helping the Nurses and Doctors with minor trauma cases. You'll be working in pairs, Masters Truden and Raaf since both of you already have some Healer training I'll need to split you up with the Padawans to help me oversee and to practice as well."

"Master Eden?" a Nurse walked in, white scrubs stained with blood, "is your group ready? I haven't much time."

Avalore nodded, "Everyone this is Nurse Riora, she will be helping me oversee your duties with the patients."

Riora gave a short wave, no smile present on her face.

"Let's see, [member="Branimir"] you will be working with [member="Uri Aureleos"], [member="Corvus Raaf"] will work with [member="Sanya Val Lerium"], [member="Kana Truden"] you will be with [member="Oukaze Ryuu"]. Let's go everyone, Nurse Riora lead the way."

East Wing

"First thing's first," Avalore began, speaking over the din and bustle of the very busy East Wing, "Nurse Riora will show you to your patient and their attending Nurse or Doctor. When you arrive, you introduce yourself. The Nurses will inform you on the patient's status and direct you to where they need your help. When you are ready to begin, let me know and I will come over to guide you through the technique needed for your patient."

OOC -

Corvus and Sanya -
Nurse Ettle
Patient: 14 year old girl named Maya. Badly sprained ankle, minor scrapes and cuts.
Setting: Maya does not like needles, is a spoiled brat, and is rather dramatically upset about her injuries. She won't let any of the Nurses touch her ankle. Her mother hasn't arrived yet but is on her way. Maya might be bribed into being good long enough to check that ankle...

Kana and Oukaze -
Doctor Markem
Patient: 32 year old male (you can pick the race) named Balen. Fractured ribs on the worksite after falling from some scaffolding. Minor concussion and swollen left eye.
Setting: Balen is trying to be a tough guy about his pain and isn't being very helpful to his Doctor or open about where he's experiencing the most pain. He's only just arrived and has not yet had x-rays taken, Doctor Markem suspects the fractured ribs but doesn't know for sure yet. Balen has also lost vision in his swollen eye. He will likely open up to some gentle words from a pretty lady or emphatic persuasion.

Branimir and Uri -
Nurse Frey
Patient: 25 year old female togruta named Ashta. Multiple lacerations to face and arms. Other scrapes and bruises.
Setting: Ashta won't tell the Nurse how she received these injuries and is very withdrawn about them - but otherwise is not giving any trouble about treating them. She seems deeply upset about the wounds on her face, likely worried about her appearance. Several of them are quite deep and will likely scar. She is wary of help from males.

Other than the information I have provided, you have creative freedom here to NPC your Nurses/Doctors and Patients. I am looking for some good dialogue and quality posts here. Tag me when you are ready for Avalore's help.
