The ship is named after Coryth Elaris, a Rogue Jedi Master, close friend and former associate of Siobhan Kerrigan and Firemane Industries. She is also the biological mother of Elpsis Kerrigan-Alcori. The diminutive Jedi Master had devoted her life to the healing arts, having sworn an sacred oath to do no harm, seek the weak, feeble, ill and wounded, and, above all else, to help those in need.
After spending a lot of her life in the unknown regions and on the fringes of the Galaxy, facing many trials and tribulations, Coryth came to associate with the Omega Protectorate and later with Firemane. Despite their ideological differences, Siobhan struck up a friendship with her.
The healer saved her life many times, and Siobhan got the chance to repay her when Coryth was dying from Sith Poison a cruel Sith Lord had infected her with many years. Siobhan helped save her life and slew the Dark Master. Later the pair, along with a host of allies, went on an expedition to Malachor to destroy a dark artefact that was trying to kill Coryth. Eventually the Light Master was reunited with her estranged daughter Elpsis, who due to circumstance had grown up without knowing her mother. Over time the two reconciled.
Elpsis was later adopted by the Kerrigan-Alcori family after Coryth vanished. When she felt that her biological mother had passed away and rejoined the Living Force, she was inconsolable. In order to pay tribute to her many good deeds and the services she had rendered her family, Siobhan decided to name a ship after her.
Since the healer had not been a woman of war, it would obviously serve a purpose that was in keeping with her calling in life. This obviously ruled out building a warship or something similar. Thus the Elaris Class Medical Ship was born. It is designed as a fully functional hospital ship that is able to accommodate and care for a large number of wounded and sick. To this end it has been equipped with advanced multispecies medical facilities. It was also designed to be well-protected, in order to ensure that those who were being cared would not be easily put at risk. Use of the second stage of Enlightenment quantum communicators ensures communications security.
The ship has several tractor beam projectors. These are meant to be used for rescuing pilots and smaller ships that need rescuing. Furthermore, the ship incorporates advanced air scrubbers. Likewise, the Elaris has sealed medical areas. This prevents infections and diseases from being spread to the rest of the personnel aboard the ship.
There is a mandatory sterilisation unit outside of the medical areas. This protects both the crew and patients. The ship is designed for triage and immediate healing. Thus it has a large hangar that can accommodate six squadrons of support craft to transport the wounded to safety. Patients who require long term care will be brought elsewhere once they are out of danger.
The Elaris Class is intended to be used by Firemane's armed forces, the Order of Fire and the megacorp's vassals. When operated by Firemane, it is primarily staffed by military medical professionals from Firemane's medical corps as well as healers from the Order, such as the Order of Fire Hospitallers. Vashyada healers, well-represented among the Hospitallers, are often found aboard those ships used by Firemane. Each ship can accommodate a small security force of about fifty soldiers. Though primarily intended for use by Firemane, the Elaris can also be sold to select clients. Half of the proceeds are donated to various charities sponsored by Firemane.
