- Exceptional Resilience: The Emerald Undertow is very well protected vessel. Layered shielding systems and a thick layer of Argentum-series matrix armor supported by an Ossis starship frame protect the warship from heavy and sustained firepower, making it very capable of standing up to other vessels of its size and engaging in slugging matches.
- Extreme Firepower: The Emerald Undertow packs a heavy punch, with its signature Ragnarok-class Heavy Gun Batteries and Thunderer-class Particle Beam Cannons along with a myriad of other weapons providing it with enough firepower to single-handedly take on some fleets as well as letting it outgun many ships of comparable size.
- Admiral's Cunning: As the personal command ship of an experienced admiral, it should come as little surprise that the Emerald Undertow incorporates some uncommon technologies as well as the man’s penchant for modularity, especially in its weapon systems and Mission Function Modules.
- Low Speed: The Emerald Undertow is somewhat slower than many of its counterparts, in large part due to its very heavy hull armor and the Ossis Starship Frame underneath that.
- Low maneuverability: The Emerald Undertow is less agile than many of its counterparts, in large part due to its very heavy hull armor and the Ossis Starship Frame underneath that.
One of the largest vessels ever constructed at the Waystation, the Emerald Undertow is a massive, well armed and defended battlecruiser that serves as the flagship of Lucerne Labs’ corporate security fleet. Given this role, the battlecruiser unsurprisingly boasts a myriad of advanced weapons and starship technologies from Lucerne Labs, almost making it a tour de force of the company’s many engineers over the years. Yet despite the contribution of these talented engineers, the conceptual design of the vessel itself really is the product of Admiral Quee and his adopted brother Salmakk. These design preferences are reflected in the Undertow’s diverse and adaptable banks of weaponry as well as the inclusion of using large mission modules. Unsurprisingly, the Emerald Undertow is most often under Admiral Quee’s direct command and usually acts as the flagship of his Directorate forces, fighting at the fore of the many minor campaigns in the Unknown Regions that the man has involved himself in. With the admiral’s return to the galactic mainstream, it seems likely that the warship will continue to be a powerful and adaptable force on the galaxy’s battlefields.
Technical Explanations
Crew & Automation: The Emerald Undertow uses a similar layout to the other recent Lucerne Labs warships, with most of the crew housed and working on the ship's core functions in a central, spherical section, which notably includes the ship's Command Information Center style bridge buried deep within the vessel. The rest of the ship's infrastructure branches out of this sphere and intertwines with the rest of the ship's frame. Each of these sections uses modular compartmentalization based on technology derived from the Carrack-class Light Cruiser alongside a Vitae Life Support System to minimize crew casualties even when the ship is suffering through great damage. Because the warship is likely to be a boarding target given its role as a flagship, the Emerald Undertow not only includes Lucerne Lab’s standard security systems, but also boasts an internal architecture clearly inspired by the Star Galleon, with ray-shielded turadium blast doors, encapsulating ray shield projectors in key rooms and hallways, checkpoints at key corridors with automated weapons, and blast doors and bulkheads with rectractable firing ports. The ship’s internals have been described as being fortress-like. is a mixture of that of the Star Galleons. Like many of the company's newer ships, much of the ship runs on Calor Series BioComputers connected by Biolux series Organoform circuitry. These systems can run most of the ship's systems in an emergency without a crew at reduced performance. Additionally, these high-powered computer systems are capable of hosting multiple artificial intelligences. With Admiral Quee almost always in command, this means that the crew is almost augmented and supplemented by several of Lucerne Labs artificial intelligences, including Atropos, Compass, and Dryas, which can enhance the crew and consequently the ship’s performance in their related areas. As Admiral Quee’s Directorate flagship, the Emerald Undertow has extensive command suites based on his personal experience with other designs and his own preferences derived from those experiences. Whereas some previous Lucerne Labs designs have had both a SOC and POC, the Emerald Undertow has a single room that fulfills both functions known simply as the “Operations Center”. This large room has bulkheads covered in flatscreen panels and recessed holo-projectors, allowing it to entirely display miniaturized engagements in a realtime and immersive environment, from a small squad conducting a groundside raid to massive fleet battles which can occupy the entire room. Admiral Quee and his staff typically walk around inside these simulated engagements, taking notes and directing actions through datapads linked to the Emerald Undertow’s computers. A trio of Oracle-class Communications Systems allows Admiral Quee and his staff to coordinate the vast stream of data and exert command and control functions on the ships under his command. Because he works closely with the Silver Jedi, the Emerald Undertow also has a small suite of meditation chambers and cybernetic chambers next to the operations center.
Engine Systems: The Emerald Undertow’s original design solely used the company’s classic Nimble-5 Ion Engines, which provide the battlecruiser ability to briefly increase its speed. However, halfway through construction, the Lucerne Helical Engine was introduced and became mature enough to consider installing on the battlecruiser. A brief redesign saw the Emerald Undertow replace some of its internal storage with a number of these Helical Engines, which are used as back-up engines if the main drives are damaged. Like many other Lucerne Labs designs, the Emerald Undertow also utilizes a Gulfstream maneuvering system, which can enhance the ship's maneuverability at the cost of speed. These advanced engine systems give the Emerald Undertow some unusual advantages compared to many of its counterparts, especially for its size. The Emerald Undertow has a fairly standard hyperdrive for a ship its size, but it does also have a Torrential Hyperdrive Booster which can be hooked up to the hyperdrive if Admiral Quee desires. More commonly, this is not done in order to allow the Emerald Undertow to use its HIMS device to better penetrate through interdiction fields.
Shielding systems: The Emerald Undertow is protected by a duo of nearly identical Aspis Shield Systems, which much like the classic Mon Calamari cruisers, provides the Emerald Undertow with layered shielding. Not only does layered shielding makes it more difficult for weapons to penetrate, but it also allows local shield projectors and generators to be briefly taken offline for repair while still maintaining some shielding in the affected area. Each of these shields is reasonably powerful for its size, providing the Undertow with excellent shielding protection for a warship of its size. The Emerald Undertow also has the new Starlight Scutum-series Shield System, which can provide a third layer of shielding. Due to its unusual properties, it is not uncommon for this shield to actually be deactivated with its power being rerouted to the other shield systems instead. As it has the power draw and relative strength as each individual Aspis system on this ship, this power transfer can rapidly restore their shield generation. The Emerald Undertow also an Aegis II Anticoncussion Field Generator with its own dedicated power generator network, which makes it reasonably resilient against kinetic threats such as slugs and warheads.
Hull: The Emerald Undertow was designed from the ground up with the Ossis series starship framework, making it exceptionally durable and resilient to variety of potential dangers. The front of the vessel is exceptionally reinforced with additional framework in order to better withstand the opening salvos that start many engagements as well as helping to aid it survive ramming actions. This sturdy framework is then covered in a thin layer of Impervium armor which in turn is covered by a thicker layer of Argentum-series Matrix Armor. Underneath this thick carapace are distinct compartments with sturdy bulwarks based off of those of the old Carrack-class Cruiser. Each compartment is fed by its local node of the ship's Vitae-class Life Support System. Given the ship's role as a warship, most of the life support tanks are filled with nitrogen-carbon dioxide mixture to act as a fire suppressant. The central stern of the Emerald Undertow is a mostly cavernous hold that actually acts as a holding slot for modular task force cruiser module. Thanks to the use of a collapsible framework that can be fitted with the same thick armor plating as the rest of the ship, this module is as well protected as the rest of the ship. But this is also a fairly time consuming process, taking several days to accomplish in the field or about one day at a dedicated shipyard.
Weapon Systems: The Emerald Undertow’s primary weapons are a trio of Ragnarok-class Heavy Gun Batteries, with one located right at the ship’s bow, and another two amidships on either side of the vessel. These exceptionally powerful weapons are turreted, allowing the Undertow to project at least two of these batteries in every fire arc except for the dorsal fire arc. Nearly as versatile as they are powerful, Ragnarok’s exact projectile loadout varies based on mission requirements and expected opponents. Automated mag-lev lifts feed these batteries from armored internal magazines, which allow each weapon to utilize up to four projectile types. These massive batteries are supported by secondary batteries of Variable Charge Turbolasers and Particle Cannons. A quartet of four Thunderer Heavy Particle Beam Cannons are housed in large recessed turrets on the ship’s dorsal side, while another four are located on the ventral side among clusters of other weapons. These very heavy weapons are supported by dozens of Tyrvald II Variable Charge turbolasers and Corona-class Long-Range Turbolaser Batteries and hundreds of Firestorm–class Plasma Turbolaser batteries. These flexible energy weapons provide the Emerald Undertow with the bulk of its considerable gun firepower. These capital grade weapons are supplemented by hundreds of large General Purpose Warhead Launchers, typically fitted with Tidefall Brilliant Torpedoes, and minelayers, which can deploy mines and static drones like Stoic Missile Sentries or E-45 interdictor sentries. To protect against small strikecraft and warheads, the Emerald Undertow has a mixture of flak gun batteries, defensive missile batteries, quad auto-blaster emplacements, and point defense pressor beams scattered equidistantly across its hull. The Emerald Undertow also has a couple of gravity-based weapons, notably a quartet of Aura-class class Tractor/Pressor beams as well as four gravity well projectors. These latter weapons help the Emerald Undertow control the battlespace around it and allow it to act as its own interdictor.
Carrying Capacity: The Emerald Undertow follows fairly conservative trends for a command ship in this area. While it only carries a small number of starfighters, it does carry a reasonable amount of support craft and a large troop complement. Theoretically, the Emerald Undertow can carry a full corps of troops under the old Imperial order of battle model. In actuality, the Directorate is unable to fully supply enough troops to occupy these barracks on a regular basis, and it typically only carries about a quarter of that strength on average basis, with the rest of that space being used typically to hold supplies for extended missions in the Unknown Regions. The ship also has over a hundred assault tubes equipped with plasma cut boarding devices, which allows the vessels troops to directly board enemy vessels if the opportunity presents itself. The Emerald Undertow also can hold a modular task force cruiser module, several of which have been modified from their original purposes by the Directorate for their own specific purposes.
Mission Function Modules: Based on Admiral Quee’s experience with the Krakana-class and the Silver Tide, the Emerald Undertow’s stern has a special internal hold designed to be backwards compatible with the Mission Function Modules used by the old Imperial Modular Taskforce cruiser. This makes the Emerald Undertow highly modular, an almost a necessity because of the very few large warships that the Directorate can afford to field – the group simply doesn’t have the funds to field multiple, large specialized battlecruisers. While the Undertow can use unmodified mission function modules, Lucerne Labs has acquired several gutted function module shells, which have been retrofitted to provide several different abilities. The Emerald Undertow can carry only ONE of the following mission function Module at a time at the bottom of its fin. Like the modular taskforce cruiser, it also takes a day at a shipyard or other advanced facility to change out modules.
Hospital: This module remains relatively unchanged from the TaggeCo version, housing a large number of medical staff, both organic and inorganic, along with extensive surgical suites, bacta tanks, and recovery wards to help stabilize and heal thousands of peoples. Lucerne Labs has notably replaced dozens of typical beds with stasis chambers to stabilize those who are grieviously injured or infected. The hospital module is typically given to the Emerald Undertow employed on humanitarian and mercy missions, making a strategic asset even if it has little direct combat value.
Survey Module: Another module that remains relatively unchanged from the TaggeCo version. the Emerald Undertow survey module notably replace the carried starfighters and blastboats with hyperspace pods to carry Excursor probe droids to other part of a system or as an advance scouting force before the battlecruiser arrives. This is probably one of the Emerald Undertow’s most commonly used modules because of Admiral Quee’s frequent expeditions into the Unknown Regions.
Observation Module: Another refurbished module that remains relatively unchanged from the TaggeCo version. The Emerald Undertow’s does not carry any starfighters, using that space instead to support the addition of Signal Tappers and communication wave descramblers, the Emerald Undertow has typically used this module to gather intelligence at a distance while hunting down its syndicate foes or engaging in strategic reconnaissance of other systems and potential enemy bases.
Rescue Module: Another refurbished module that remains relatively unchanged from the TaggeCo version. Typically deployed to areas after massive space battles or natural disasters where there is expected that there will be large numbers of casualties, and the fleet will not be occupying the space afterwards. This is done in order to ensure that damaged craft and EVA crew do not fall into enemy hands. This is probably the most rarely used module by the Emerald Undertow – as the admiral prefers to use droid based forces for extremely dangerous missions.
Colony Module: This is actually an extensively repurposed version of the Inquisition Module. While it retains the pair of modular garrisons, the interrogation droids are replaced with labor droids, the orbital nightcloak is replaced with weather and communication satellites, and the pre-fabricated disintegration chambers are replaced with simple tents. This allows the Emerald Undertow o assist in establishing new colonies or moving refugees to settle in other areas of already populated worlds.
Cloaking Warfare: Based on the admiral’s experience with the Obi-Wan Kenobi, this provides the Emerald Undertow with a stygium-based cloaking device, gravitic amplitude modulators, gemcutter device, and a crystal gravfield trap along with generators to power those devices. Based on Admiral Quee’s experience with the Nebel-class ELINT Frigate, this module also has large scale flechette launchers as well as plasma dischargers used to create large clouds of particles around the battlecruiser. Unexplained movements of these particles or the inability to diffuse into certain areas of space (because there is a solid object there instead) suggests a cloaked object. This gives the Emerald Undertow the ability to be relatively stealthy, especially when its helical engine is in use, as well as the ability to hunt down other cloaked or stealthy warships.
Repair Droid Bay: This module contains thousands of repair droids and R-UR4 repair drones along with recharging stations, oil bathes, starship parts storage sections, and other work stations needed to keep this army of droids ready and equipped to keep the Emerald Undertow and other friendly vessels in tip-top shape even as they endure the most trying of battles.
Rearming Bay: Taking inspiration from the lowly and often unrecognized Combat Utility Vehicle, this module consists of starfighter ammunition bunkers, fuel tanks, and repair droids along with feeding mechanisms that can take these supplies to just outside the hull itself. Micro-tractor beams allow this module to quickly drag in friendly strikecraft before refueling, repairing, and rearming them in a matter of seconds, making the Emerald Undertow a force multiplier for the friendly starfighters in big battles.
Boarding Module: This module builds off Admiral Quee’s extensive experience with the Ocean Tide and its successor Union II-class Assault Carriers. Not only does it have barracks for several more regiments of troops, but it also sports almost a thousand assault tubes with plasma cut boarding devices. When the Emerald Undertow nears a target, these tubes can quickly shoot out from behind armored hatches to penetrate through enemy hulls before releasing thousands of the Emerald Undertow troops and battle droids to seize or damage enemy vessels. As some vessels are not likely to ever get in range of the battlecruiser, this module also has several hundred person-sized catapult pressors, which allows the Emerald Undertow to launch heavily armored space troopers and battle droids at high velocities towards the hulls of the enemy ships, thus allowing them to still potentially board smaller and faster enemy vessels.
