Sorel Crieff

Ready are you? What know you of ready?

Sorel had promised training and training she was going to deliver. They were still on the massive space station that was in fact part ship and part Jedi Academy.

When Sorel initially heard of the project she wondered if she’d ever use it. She preferred to train in open spaces as opposed to classrooms, but once she arrived, she realised that both options were available here.

So she booked time in one of the training suites that simulated a planet’s environment. In fact, it didn’t just simulate it, it represented it. So she entered the vast room through an opaque plastiglass door and once inside, it looked as though she was on some verdant planet. Ahead was a small meadow and to her left and right were trees. It was similar in temperature and humidity to Ossus and Sorel could not resist kneeling down and touching the grass.

She closed her eyes and could smell all of the aromas of a woodland clearing, as well as the sounds too. And she sensed all of the creatures that would typically live in these environments – from tiny insects up to some large birds that appeared to be nesting nearby.

Glancing up, it appeared to be a bright and sunny morning, although Sorel knew the sky was in fact a façade. But everything else was real. She suspected that the longer she remained in the room, the easier it would be to forget they were on board a ship.

Finally, she walked ahead and noted the two semi-circular benches she’d requested. She took a seat on one of them and awaited the arrival of Ery.

Ery'lyn had left her bag and books at home, knowing that today's lesson would be practical, not research driven. She felt practically naked without the heavy weight on her shoulders, her hands constantly shifting to adjust a strap that wasn't there.

Master Sorel had requested a private training suite for today's lesson and the padawan was not sure what to expect. What she did not expect was a rolling landscape covered in greenery, with trees surrounding an expanse of grass on both sides.

She sucked in a breath, momentarily stunned by the simple beauty of a simulated environment. The sounds of birds and insects echoed around her and she couldn't resist the wide smile as she stepped further into the room, away from the plastiglass doors that separated their training area from the rest of the ship.

In the distance she noticed a familiar figure sitting on one of two circular benches. Setting off towards the clearing and the woman who had agree to teach her the ways of the Force, she marveled at the crunch of grass under her feet. It was surreal to consider that this room was one in a collection, onboard a hulking monolith floating through the galaxy. The Jedi had truly remarkable resources.

Bowing as she approached, the young Togruta took a seat opposite the Jedi. "Good morning, Master Crieff."

Sorel stood and returned the bow. She felt relaxed and the environment contributed to that. At times, learning in stressful places was a boon – especially as a Jedi grew in confidence – but initially confidence was an issue. Self-doubt invariably led to failure, so offering a place that was tranquil was the best way to start in Sorel’s opinion.

“Please call me Sorel. I’d prefer that – but I won’t hold it against you if you can’t. I know some Jedi prefer titles. I have to admit, I always bow and sometimes, when I meet someone for the first time, I might use their title. But only once as a rule.”

Sorel sat and indicated Ery should follow suit. “Now, one of the strengths of the Force is that it is unique to every Jedi. The weakness is, well…that it is different for every Jedi. There is rarely one way to teach someone. But there are general guiding principles.”

“And furthermore, there is often an overlap between abilities. Sense and Sight for example. They seem to blur into one for me. Or at least that’s how I use them. So, tell me, before I talk all day and send you to sleep, what experience do you have with either?”

And finally Sorel sat back and with her hands folded in her lap, she listened.
