First Reply Expedition on Makeb

planete_makeb_02.webp

I have never lived on my own before. Ever since I was born I have always had staff. They cleaned, they cooked, they guarded. I have never travelled the Galaxy without even so much as a single bodyguard. But today is not like yesterday. Or even the day before that. Living alone and doing what is otherwise mundane tasks can be overwhelming. Afterall there is a lot of unpacking and rebuilding to do. I have a new laboratory to set up, and an expedition to the volcanoes to undertake. And I must be mindful of my credits. I need to spend them wisely so that they will last.

Yet I do not know how to cook. Or even to know which food to buy, which can make living on one's own very difficult. Makeb is far different from my homeworld. Here it is much more open. There are jungles here; but they are nothing like the jungles that I once knew. Here the flora is not deadly.

Although the skies are. The electrical currents in the upper atmosphere can pose a bit of a problem. Yet I view it as a bit of protection too, from others that could otherwise be hostile. And the lighter gravity will surely take a bit of getting used to! Although it does make some of my long garments flow slowly as if they were submerged in water, which I find to be very beautiful. It is a silver lining, I suppose. Everything of beauty here is.

I walk into town, which is a bit of a walk from where I am setting up my residence, but I have chosen that location for my own safety. I wear a simple gown beneath a heavy, hooded robe. It probably makes me look like some kind of a Force Wizard, but I am nowhere near one of those. Yet they seem to be everywhere and more common in the Galaxy than anyone who is not a Force Wizard. More than likely any Force Wizard would be able to sense that I am not one of them, which is probably a good thing. I do not have one of those laser swords to defend myself against them with.

Not so long ago, Makeb resided in the territory of the Mandalorians; but no longer. Now it is in perfect and beautiful neutral space, belonging to no one but to themselves. I do not have an issue with Mandalorians, due to my father having hired them to watch over me and my homeworld for many years. So it is very fitting that I chose one of their former worlds for my new residence.

Yet despite that small feeling of safety; I still carry a dagger on my person. It is roughly the only weapon that I know how to use. However, I have only had one lesson with it, which is not very much in the grand scheme of things. But still, it is far better than having no weapon at all.

Hunger and thirst is what drives me into town today. One of the restaurants has some great reviews; and thankfully it also has a bar. I could use a good, stiff drink. Yet besides that I also came here to keep an eye out for anyone to hire for my expedition. People watching is a great skill to have and I have honed that skill well in my former life.

I walk beneath the canopy at the restaurant's entrance and already the smells of the various meals cause my stomache to grumble. I find myself a small empty table and take a seat, lowering the hood of my robe so that I could hear the conversations around me better. The sooner that I can find someone and hire them, the better. I bring up the menu as well and look it through, picking out what I should order for my first meal of the day.

I am not expecting there to be trouble. But in this Galaxy's current climate; trouble tends to lurk around every corner.

The Chiss mercenary idly awaited her food, constantly checking her datapad. She had at least three contractors accept the bounty on Nos Voros Nos Voros - yet none had reported success, if they reported at all. Sure, some of her friends had offered to help capture him - but she wasn't sure she could help the hunt if she saw him again.

So Eivii waited, pausing a moment upon seeing the flowing garb of another diner ( Liin Terallo Liin Terallo ) and dismissing them as some Force user or another - until they lowered their hood.

Eivii acted as if she hadn't taken attention to her - one who dressed as such to remain hidden must be slightly out of her element. Attempting to disguise the movements as more casual, Eivii began checking the bounty database only for the query to return empty.

The Chiss did not notice that the woman was watching her with a more trained eye than she herself had.

Not a wanted criminal, then - and no lightsaber in sight.

Maybe it was the pending bounty and not the woman, but something had her on edge.

I keep most of my focus on the menu. Afterall the impending meal is important. However, I could not help but notice another looking my way. Immediately their eyes switched back to their datapad and I can easily tell that they were scrolling quickly through something. Was I recognized? I had my hair trimmed down and curled in such a way that it was far easier to slip my beaded caps on without it looking too bulky. Not only that but I had adjusted my make-up to be different as well. Sadly without any staff that can see colors, I am left with only guesswork as to whether or not the colors that I have chosen indeed match. However having them be missmatched might work to my advantage as well.

But no, I should not be recognized or be notable to anyone here at all. I am not wanted in any system, nor do I have any enemies. I have not commited any crimes of any nature. The only harm that I had caused was in bringing too much attention to my homeworld, causing it to lose it's freedom and neutrality. But I will not dwell on the past. I will choose to forget it and forge ahead into something new. And if I can make a profit out of it; all the better.

I make my choice from the menu, choosing a meaty stew with some rolls, as well as a glass of whiskey. Now normally I drink wine, but given where I am, I need something with much more of an edge to it.

And now I wait for it to arrive. In the meantime I listen to the conversations around me. Some detail some of the latest podrace matches, while others range from how tedious their jobs are to complaints about their spouses or children. All in all there is nothing within the restaurant that alerts me. So why does the Chiss lady appear to be stiff and on edge? It could not possibly be me. That would be laughable, indeed!

My meal and drink arrive, and I pay the server right away instead of doing so before I leave. This way it is done and overwith. Picking up one of the rolls, I break it in half and dip it into the stew before having my first satisfying bite. Immediately my tastebuds are met with comfort and joy and I relish in it. All the while though I quietly observe everyone around me.

It seems as though some are expecting trouble for themselves far more than I am. How very interesting.

<<Contract cancelled>>

"Sithspit" Eivii muttered, perhaps too loudly considering even the hooded woman was looking at her now.

She had the credits, why could nobody catch the karking Zeltron? She knew why, of course - She would evidently need more credits to offer a better reward for bounty hunters of higher quality to chase him down. Thinking about him any further only made her more frustrated. He was the worst mistake she ever made. Or the best opportunity she had to an honest life - an opportunity she squandered. For credits.

It always came down to kriffing credits.

Eivii slowly bent the fork back into place, realizing that she had been pressing against it with her thumb.

She looked up again and caught the eye of the stranger. Eivii had no idea who this was, but as her friend Xoff Chantin Xoff Chantin would say - opportunities float to the top of even in the deepest of poodoo. The other kriffing Zeltron.

Eivii stood, strode over and pulled a chair across from Liin Terallo Liin Terallo and sat down. The Chiss had worked herself into a temper, but that temper brought with it boldness. It was not directed at the stranger, she was just conveniently present, much like how Csilla was conveniently located when the Brotherhood of the Maw decided to annihilate her homeworld.

Only, she hoped for a more constructive outcome.

"You stick out here. What's your deal?" She asked tersely. What she wanted to say was, 'you look like you have problems and money and that's my typical clientele', but that was hardly a fitting sales pitch - and it all came back to credits.

She just needed enough more credits. Then she... she would figure out what to do next when she got there.

I raise an eyebrow as the Chiss caught my attention again inbetween bites of my stew. It was obvious that she had gotten some kind of bad news. That is something that I know all too well. And more often than not; said trouble involves credits.

Surprisingly, as I rip another roll in half and dip it into the stew; the Chiss woman dragged a chair towards my little table and sat down across from me. Well this is unexpected. Not only that but she seems to be quite upset. Of course I know that it could not be directed towards me for I have done nothing to her. Nor to anyone.

Her inquiry surprises me further. However I pretend otherwise while I take a bite of the stew-dipped roll and chew it down. "Do I?" Sticking out was not exactly my intention. Yet if I were to dress in the gowns that I am more comfortable in; then I would surely stand out even further amongst those that frequent this place. "I could say the same thing about you." I provide a bit of misdirection. The shade of her skin and the darkness of her eyes and hair are far different than the other patrons. Or at least the human ones.

I pick up my whiskey and have a sip. It balanced out the heartiness of the stew quite well. "What has you so upset? Did you lose a bet?" True to form I did not answer her question at all, but turned all of the focus onto her. Yet I am also keeping an eye on anyone else that may be paying attention.

Eivii pursed her lips in frustration. The stranger had more patience than she, also redirecting the line of inquiry back to the mercenary herself.

Relax, this woman has done nothing to you.

Eivii let out a sigh and leaned back in her chair, tension leaving her posture.

She stared at the stranger, attempting to discern something from the woman - but Eivii never had been a good judge of character.

"Nothing." Eivii replied, only to immediately correct herself, "well, not nothing." The Chiss chewed on her lip. "I didn't lose a bet. I lost a... a person."

You're oversharing again! shut your mouth and work the client!

Eivii resisted the impulse to get up and flee. She took a second to compose herself before continuing. The Chiss woman was visibly high-strung.

"You're right - I stick out here too."
A restless knee bounced under the table. "Not a lot of Chiss around, I get it. My point is - "

What was her point? Abrupt silence followed. What would she say, that she anxiously was laying low while other bounty hunters snatched someone for her?
"I guess I don't have a point. Must just be your unlucky day, huh? Getting harassed by strangers while you eat."

Eivii found herself needing to calm down once again. She was quick to work herself up.

"Listen, I didn't come here just to interrupt your meal. You look like you need something, and might even have the credits to pay for it - unless you're really good with that pigsticker on your belt" Eivii pointed towards the hilt of the dagger barely visible from the flowing cloth in the low gravity. As jumpy as the Chiss was, she was equally observant.

Well...

Perhaps not socially observant.

It is clear that my own responses were not what the Chiss was expecting. I offer up a slight shrug of my shoulders and continue to eat while she talks. I do have a personna of my own to portray here, afterall. Just who that is exactly, I am unsure of. But the less details given, the better.

My stew is nearly halfway finished, yet I pause all the same to have another drink of my whiskey, all the while my gaze continues to scan those around us. So far all seemed well in that regard. Outside of genuine curiosity, everyone else seemed to be paying us no mind.

Her comments; both on harrassment as well as on the dagger at my belt gave me cause to laugh softly under my breath. I am not laughing at her, but moreso at the very thoughts of what image about me that she is relaying. This is all very new to me, and strange to not really be seen by her ilk as anything else but a political/business snob. All in all I find it to be quite refreshing.

I tilt my head ever so slightly to the side while I regard her with my own comments. "I would not call this harrassment. Nor are you preventing me from eating my meal. If you were to steal it, then that would be another story." But she is not. And so I take another mouthful of stew and chew it down. I may be pretending to be something other than a dignified lady, but I still maintain my manners. "I am in need of a few things, yes. And as you rightly guessed; I can pay for it. You on the otherhand, seem to have lost more than a person. If I can hazard a guess, then I would say that it is a man. What did he do? Cheat on you?" I can only assume that a matter of the heart would cause her to act in this way.

"I am in need of a few things, yes. And as you rightly guessed; I can pay for it.
Score!

You on the otherhand, seem to have lost more than a person. If I can hazard a guess, then I would say that it is a man. What did he do? Cheat on you?"
CHIT!

Was she really so easy to read? Probably.
"Well, uh, yes, but not really." Eivii began, barely hesitating before the process of trauma dumping began. "Yes, it's man. Stupid, red skinned, muscular Zeltron man." Eivii practically deflated. "No he didn't cheat. I..." Eivii suddenly chose her words very specifically. "I was the one who was discovered and..."

This sounded simultaneously more and less problematic than the truth. She might as well tell the truth, Eivii was safely out of Alliance territory here.

"He was- is a bodyguard. We worked together doing mercenary jobs a few times. Then I got the job of a lifetime, the kind that pays enough to retire from my line of work, from people you don't want to refuse. The target was the very woman he was hired to protect." The woman that still lives.

" The plan was to get close to her through him. It was working well, too." Eivii idly felt around the third finger of her left hand. "Then I made the fool mistake of believing the very lie I was telling. I fell for him the same as he fell for me."

The mercenary stared off at the horizon as they recalled the tale, evidently not able to confide in others often. "The client got impatient. I had to make the move, I tried to finish the job and keep him too."

"Karking nerfherder move."

"I lost the target and him both. He took a bolt meant for the target, I got a warrant. Haven't seen him since."

At least Eivii managed to keep silent that the target was a Senator of the Galactic Alliance, Lady Sylvia Organa Lady Sylvia Organa or the fact that she currently had a bounty scrounged up from her stash of credits for the man's capture. She knew it wasn't healthy, but somehow she knew if she could just get him back, everything would turn out alright. Even if it was in Carbonite.

"Anyway, I'm no assassin these days. My reputation took a hit and I take whatever Merc work I can for the most part - which is how you know you're getting a good deal by hiring me."

The enthusiasm didn't quite reach her scarlet eyes as she tried to turn her tale back around to a sales pitch.

I listen to her story while I continue to eat my stew and work on my last roll. Oh, how they sure make excellent meals here! I shall remember to frequent this establishment.

I return my focus to the Chiss lady's story. It reminds me of one of those holo dramas. At first I thought that she was going to tell me that she was involved in some love triangle. But no it was something entirely different. But falling for a bodyguard? I was accused of the very same thing after I had hired Balun Dashiell Balun Dashiell . Yet it was not the truth at all for I have yet to fall for anybody; nor has anyone fallen for me. Not even from afar.

But this is not about me. This is about her.

I finish my stew and push the bowl to the side, following that with another sip of my whiskey. Then I look at her directly in the eyes. My own expression is probably a little harder than it used to be. Afterall when one is empty inside, it is difficult to appear soft and gentle. "Lucky for you, we are in neutral space, so only the locals hold jurisdiction when it comes to warrants. I am not in the business of law enforcement either. My sort of business lies in; well not in one that can so easily be guessed." I know all about losing one's repuation, for I am currently going through that myself. Yet it is more or less self-imposed due to my own stubborness in regards to freedom. But none of that is something that she needs to know about. "I am planning on going on an expedition soon. And I could sure use someone with your skills."

I could use a couple of others too. But surely after I find one person, the rest could follow. Afterall, it is not as though I was going to start this expedition today. There is still much to prepare for it.

"On a side note, do you happen to know how to cook as well?"

"Lucky indeed." Exceptionally lucky, considering the narrow getaways and the prison break she benefitted from. The electromagnetic interference made Makeb an exceptionally well-suited planet to lie low.

"I am planning on going on an expedition soon. And I could sure use someone with your skills."

"That sounds better than paid murder - I can shoot, fly, operate heavy machinery and have a bit of survivalism experience. A little bit of slicing too, though I'm far from an expert."

Eivii started to sound boastful, but it was not false confidence.

"On a side note, do you happen to know how to cook as well?"

"I can cook - er, that is, I can prepare ingredients to be edible." She didn't take those silly hobbyist culinary arts classes like Nos had. Maybe she should - it was unfair how well he cooked only to joylessly eat it as if he was refueling a speeder.

"You probably meant can I cook well. The, uh, answer to that is no." Eivii confessed.

Only now did the Chiss begin to notice this Lady seemed to be drinking like a spacer - her glass being full of whiskey.

When the lady had a free hand, Eivii extended hers in introduction; "Elae'ivi'ilomer at your service, Eivii for short."

I give her a bow of my head as she lists out her skills. She can surely do a lot of what I need. And fortunately the trip is a short one, given that the expedition is taking place on world. So the only ship to fly would be a small one carrying their crew, equipment and supplies; which would save them from walking.

Listening further, she answers my question in regards to cooking. Making something edible is far more skill than I have. I have no knowledge about what goes into a meal or how. Even the stew that I had eaten is a mystery to me. I find that a little ironic, given that I am a scientist and one could say that I cook things up in my laboratory. But I digress; it is not for anything to be consumed.

"Any knowledge in cooking is better than no knowledge at all. Although I am hopeful that our expedition will not take too long. Still, if things go south and it takes longer than expected; it is better to not have it end through starvation."

The Chiss extends her hand across the table in greeting, offering up her name. Her nickname is easy enough to remember. I reach over and place my hand into hers; giving it a firm, yet gentle shake. "Tera." The name that I offer is a portion of my surname, as opposed to using a fake name that I will forget later on. I do not want to give anyone that I meet here my full name. They have no reason to know it. No one is looking for me. Only Mr. Usher Mr. Usher knows of my current location. He is the only one that responded to my messages, and the only one to offer his assistance. And for that I am forever grateful.

I pull back my hand and cradle them both in my lap. "Do you know of any others here with similar skills that are looking for work, Eivii?"

Makeb seemed a peaceful place to Draven when he arrived on the planet. At least in comparison to some of the worlds he'd encountered throughout his life. It'd been a rejuvenating change of pace for the apparently young man. Though despite his youthful appearance. His mind was simultaneously ancient and younger in many different ways. As well as his biological age was complicated as well. Due to a traumatic trait which Draven was becoming ever further convinced had something to do with whatever portion of him was not human. He wondered if any of his siblings faced these problems? Not that he'd ever find that information out. Draven couldn't even remember their names. Barely even remembering that he had siblings. It was a side effect of being brought into an order like the jedi orders at a young age.

Makeb was exactly the kind of world Draven needed to be at to catch a break. It was more imperative now that Draven wasn't really associated with any order. At least not in a direct sense. He didn't exactly leave the order officially. Though he also couldn't claim to be a part of it. As he'd long since lost touch with any members from within it. However, it took little longer than a week on the world before Draven got restless, and hungry. As such Draven did what he normally did when it was time to figure out a new activity. He went to somewhere to eat, where he could just casually observe locals and travelers alike, and see where he was most needed. If of course he was needed anywhere.

Draven set up in a corner and got himself a cup of tea. Leaf juice sometimes was a necessary thing to consume. Draven had on a dark blue training robe and black pants. Barefoot like the norm. As shoes were an inconvenience. They took away from the feel of the terrain, and offered too much padding when there was something needing kicked.

As was normal for him. His head buzzed as he worked to deciphering the emotions and conversations around him. He remained mindful to his lightsaber hilt concealed under a fold of his training robe. As well as his gear back he carried with him. A gift from the last person he acknowledged as a teacher within the jedi order. She was a Matukai practitioner and honestly. Draven wouldn't probably still be alive without much of her teachings and her harsh 'survive or go splat.' training regiments...

'Focus.' Draven reminded himself before he trailed too deeply off into thoughts about the past. Some folks seemed content for the most part. Just getting through their meals without any further agendas. Then something struck him as a group of folks had mixtures of curiosity surrounding someone who seemed... Uncannily calm, and someone who was an emotional roller coaster. 'That's annoying.' Draven thought to himself. Temperamental people used to be the hardest for Draven to keep his cool with. Considering he sometimes struggled not to match their energies. While he was much more grounded now. He still considered it a thorn in his side when someone had a personality that made thermal detonators look stable.

Draven therefore decided to tune his focus in further to investigate what they were conversing about. Without trying to exactly be rude about it. He kept his eyes focused ahead and sipped on his tea. While instead he used the force to track the sources and listen though only tried to observe the imperative information to why attention was being drawn their direction.

It was a pair of women. Seemingly meeting for the first time... Both stuck out in their efforts not to stick out. A business negotiation was being completed of some sorts?.. Expedition... Possible need for more? 'Well... that's convenient.' He mused considering he'd been looking to find something to do. Draven did his best to sort of displace his hearing about some of the emotional dumping one lady did. It wasn't too much His business what was occurring in her personal life, and honestly Draven didn't wish to be the guy that interposed himself onto such affairs unless invited to.

Draven completed his last sip of his tea. Before he set down his mug. Stood up and proceeded to casually walk towards the table. His eyes gathering in the information of the two women now. Darting between the two without staring at either. Eventually, he came close to the table. Being mindful his posture remained as neutral as was possible. While he decided to intersect upon their conversation.

"Pardon my interruption. As I don't mean to be rude. However, I couldn't help but overhear that you're seeking people for an expedition?" Draven spoke in a curious tone of voice. "Would you be open to if I include myself into this potential assignment? Depending upon what you're seeking to do with this expedition. I might be able to offer some assistance."

Draven patiently waited while he glanced between the two women. Though most of his focus was upon the lady who had proposed the expedition. He could see why they stood out despite their efforts not to. It didn't bother him any. In fact he probably stood out more than what he himself would like to. So, joining into a group of people who unintentionally stood out seemed oddly fitting.

Despite not breaking eye contact with Liin or adjusting her body language, Eivii had unholstered a concealed holdout blaster from under the table, held close to her belly, ready to blast choobies of the approaching footsteps if it proved to be an alliance marshall.

To her slight relief it wasn't someone after her - just a boyish man who overheard the expedition discussion. The Chiss adopted the fakest of smiles and slowly slid the blaster back into its holster. Eivii herself was barely force sensitive herself, weak enough she didn't qualify as a ozyly-esehembo before her homeworld was brought to ruin.

She was sensitive enough, however, to tell when someone else was. A quick peek pretty much verified it by virtue of his robe alone.

The mercenary slowly folded one leg over the other and leaned back, attempting to send a subtle glance and eyebrow to her newfound employer - a hint at the boy's force sensitivity if the enigmatic woman hadn't clocked him as one already.

The thought that he might have overheard her venting made her want to pull the blaster out again, but they seemed to wisely hide any indication that they may have eavesdropped on her personal details.

It is not difficult to spot someone making a beeline towards the table. Even if he happened to be looking elsewhere at any given moment; the path that he took gave away his intention. And from the look of his robes, I am certain that it is safe for me to hazard a guess that he is a Force Wizard.

As he finished his approach, I look to my new hire. Her body seemed tense, despite how she appeared to look casual. And it is easy to notice that one hand of hers remained under the table. From what I could gather from what I know about others in her line of work; it is more than likely that she is holding a blaster or something similar and training it on the newcomer. Fortunately for everyone, she did not appear to have an itchy trigger finger. Although if some fight were to break out, I would not run and hide. Instead I would just remain still. When one has nothing to lose and nothing to live for; death is nothing to be afraid of.

I redirect my attention to the young man, offering up a small nod in kind. In my former life I would have given a gracious smile and bow of my head. But not today. I have had to leave that path for the wild blue yonder. "You have overheard correctly. I am planning an expedition that does require some extra hired hands. What skills do you possess?" I am not going to outright ask if he is a Force Wizard, for that is none of my business. Nor does it matter. I am not involved in their wars or their politics. I never have been. I am not one of them, so I do not belong to be around them.

There is no place for me but my laboratory. Only there am I needed. And this expedition will help gain me more work for myself; so that I may continue to shelter myself away from everybody.

Draven kept up his neutral, calm, and curious demeanor. Leaving it to the imagination of the women if he was aware about any armaments they might have, and if they had a inkling of temptation to turn those weapons upon him. His pacifism was a courtesy at this point.

Mindfully, had he been in their position. He would have been equally as on edge as the one lady was. Especially, considering she felt it necessary to force out a smile. Draven could feel it was nothing more than a facade. Though for the time being the chiss woman was holding off the temptation to shoot him, and that was plenty enough to remain civil.

He listened to the lady who was employing for the expedition confirm his statement and pitch her inquiry. A reasonable question as it was important to know if someone would be fitting for whatever task you wish to accomplish.

"I've had survival experience in countless terrains, I've had some hands on work with different resources and materials. I'm extremely adaptable. I can hold my own if things get complicated." Draven expressed being calculative with his words. He had further skills and abilities and some they might be able to draw assumptions off. Though he wanted to also not over sell things. First off not to come across as arrogant. Though secondly he didn't wish to make it known entirely how well he could fight. In case either of the women decided for whatever reason becoming hostile towards him was favorable.

Complicated. Well I certainly hope that it will not come to that. But knowing my luck and past reports; that little hope of mine is bound to be wrong. And so I need to take the utmost of precautions.

I give the young man a nod. "Well then, consider yourself on board." I then prepare to rise to my feet. However, I hesitate as there is a couple of more things that I should touch on before I leave them. "Meet me in the landing platform outside of town tomorrow afternoon. Bring whatever personal supplies or weapons that you care to. I shall look after the rest. Are there any further questions before I leave you?"
