When Dak realized that the way to go in his life of the Force was the "undercover" route, the Knight knew that he needed to keep his connection to the Force masked. The problem with that is that he would need to mask it almost constantly that not only takes a lot of focus and could indeed drain him. Then there was the decision on what to use, he needed something that he could wear and carry in plain sight. The best choice was what he was already wearing.
