Skirmish Eyes on the Prize

Location: Cole's Requiem

At times a mission was straight forward. Get in, get the prize and get out. Yet there were times such as these when it was a little more complicated. Within the cargohold of Cole's Requiem there lay a container of biomolecules from New Cov. The whole situation was a little shady in regards to how they had gotten into her possession, but it wasn't those little details that Oksana found complicated. Instead it was the fact that she had to keep their existance a secret. And while doing so, her cover story was in that she was transporting people instead.

Oksana isn't exactly a social butterfly. So she had hoped that she didn't need to be chatty.

The Kessel Run was filled with people that didn't want anyone in their business and that was fine with her. Yet it was popular too. A perfect meeting place for the end of this mission where a great payout was waiting for her.

The timer clocked downward closer to zero, marking the time to jump out of hyperspace. It was in those last ten seconds that the countdown became verbal. Oksana removed her feet from the console and pocketed her private notebook. She placed her hand on the lever, her eyes on the viewport. All of this was second nature, yet she didn't let her guard down.

Dropping the freighter out of hyperspace, she noticed more traffic that usual. Her eyes dropped down to the radar screen which could tell her a lot more than her eyes could. And it didn't look pretty.

"A job is a job." She said it and sat there looking at the screen... she rarely used her own ship... taking whatever she found and afgter her and Adilynne had taken out a large concentration of Bando Gora... well they had had access to several ships as well as planety of things that could be given in trade for a pilot. The albino zeltron tapped the console as she was waiting there and looking over iot. "So bored." She said it and her hand went to her saber on her hip. The cord attached to a blade she could swing around or catch someone with. A smaller chain was looking over at it for the time.... "Bah, who to kill." Or steal from... she could find something valuable enough for credits.

"In my experience,

[COMM TRAFFIC]

I really hate surprises.

He did.

Connel grew up with a mother who surprised him with everything, both good and bad, so he could never grow to surmise what one could be if he had to “guess”. It was so annoying, but she is his mother, and for as long as he had her around, as he had father around, and knew that there will come a time when they won’t be so he enjoyed the good with the bad…

… and this was definitely bad.

The Council had sent him on an assignment, which was fine, but the annoying part of it is that they were time stamped to only open at a specific time. The exact time it took to fly through hyperspace to the coordinates provided. Connel thought about the common laymen complaint about Jedi “Why don’t you just meditate? You meditate about everything.” Well, he already did. Connel sighed. He supposed he had no choice but to trust the Force and wait for it to lead him in the right direction. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath.

Nothing.

He had already studied the planets along the run, he even… no wait… no he didn’t.

Standing up, Connel went over to the sensors to see who might be “on the highway”.

What the frell is a “highway”?

bEfqsjA.jpeg

The small fighter returned to normal space, revealing a busy sector of space. Shuttles, gunboats, and all sizes of freighters were dashing in and out of the system ... no doubt with some sketchy goods in their holds. Padawan Xyston threw the thrusters online, maneuvering closer to the central hub of activity, but never within it. He was here with another Jedi, Connel Vanagor Connel Vanagor , to ... do something? Probably another escort mission. He'd seen far too many of those recently, the majority of them with little to no action. He knew he shouldn't be craving combat, but he'd just been so bored lately.

Kostodu turned away from the viewport and to his sensor readings. Freighters, more freighters, and there: the Defender class light corvette that Knight Vanagor was using. He selected the ship and tapped a few buttons to hail him over a secure Jedi frequency. He paused to think. He'd never spoken with Connel before. Maybe passed him occasionally in the Temple, but other than that they were unknown to each other.

He supposed it was time to change that.

Objective - "Steal the Biomolecules..."

Now Playing -

In this particular system, the cold vacuum of space was rife with spacefaring vessels. Each ship contained an individual or group, with personal ambitions unaligned with the others inhabiting realspace at the same time... Whether important or pedestrian, the bustling traffic localizing in two straightforward directions - much like a highway - tore through the inky blackness, each with distinct purpose.

One such purpose burned with a dark malice... The more finer attuned servants of the force, even through the displacing darkness of space, would feel fluctuations in its energy, as if it was desperate for somebody to hear its voice. It needed somebody to heed it, or else...--

--Even in the commercial traffic of this universe, there was always... Violence.

One of the Gunboats that flanked the mass of ships - heading in the same direction as the rest - swerved and tipped in odd directions. A large, pale and greyish biomass had begun to crawl over the durasteel exterior of the gunboat. It was a large, fleshy tumor of sorts... It undulated and bloated, until it had covered the entire vehicle. It only seemed to grow, as the fleshy surface unfolded its disgusting flaps to reveal a strange mix of biomesh, flesh and durasteel... They were pods, that ejected themselves from the infected vessel and began ravaging the other innocent vehicles in this vicinity of space.

The conforming straight line of vehicles had suddenly dispersed in fear. Tendrils began to wrap around the newly afflicted vehicles, which steered themselves into the Cole's Requiem. Infected ships flanked it from either side, and intended to stick their organic tendrils into the ship, to form temporary bridges for...

Something.

Something wicked this way comes.

And there it was.

Oksana's eyes narrowed as her radar screen showed her ships heading towards her own. On both sides.

She activated the shields as well as her intercom after reminding herself that she had passengers. "This is your Captain speaking. Please fasten your seatbelts as we're about to hit some turbulence." While speaking Oksana was in the process of buckling herself to her seat. No sooner did she end her message that she hit the throttle and took hold of the controls, pushing the Cole's Requiem into a nosedive in a bid to break the flanking maneuver.

"What in the--?" The Cole's Requiem had begun the nosedive, but then shuddered to a stop. Oksana's eyes darted to the viewport, expecting to see a series of tractor beams, yet instead what she saw was something else entirely. Was it Vong tech of some kind? Flicking to her comms, Oksana hailed the outside vessels. ~This is Cole's Requiem. Release your hold or I will open fire. This is your only warning. You have five seconds.~

Five seconds was generous in her opinion. She brought the ships guns towards some of the tendrils as she planned to shoot right through them so that the Cole's Requiem could break free once her countdown was ended. Alarms rang out as her shields had been disrupted by the fleshy tendrils snaking around her ship. "Don't you dare.." Oksana whispered under her breath. The last thing that she needed was a destroyed hull.

The countdown was over. And so she opened fire.

"Ah.... ah they are shooting at us." The man said it as Azlyn was standing there for a moment. THey had moved but hadn't been attacking.. that seemed to be someone else as she spoke. "Well do the thing.. shoot back or something. I can't get my murder on if I am in a different ship." She said it while she was standing before taking a seat with her hair moving to the one side... she debated what Adilynne would do in this situation.... well she would break down the airlock door and crush everything in that ship before they took the stuff.... Which was plan c... plan a had been the whole approach and convince them to give the things over... plan b was attack and plan d well... sometimes debris survived.

[COMM TRAFFIC]

I guess that the Force really does have a sense of humor.

He had wanted to work on his piloting skills, but this was definitely some kind of a joke. What exactly was he seeing? Were those.. Plants? There was definitely something dark going on here, and it wasn’t just that side of the Force. Some ship was opening fire, ah, looks like they don’t want to be salad, okay.

What’s that beeping? Oh, he had forgotten what it sounded like when his comms indicator started up. It was a Jedi frequency, OH, a Jedi fighter was right next to him. Okay, this should be interesting. Flipping the switch while surveying the scene in front of him, Connel commented.

How good a pilot are you?

There were no introductions, no small talk, there couldn’t be. Now there was weapons fire, it looked like the source of the guns was holding a prize that these other ships wanted. Not waiting for an answer, Connel powered up the cannons and accelerated to attack speed..

bEfqsjA.jpeg

Just as he had hailed Connel Vanagor Connel Vanagor , a strange sight appeared ahead. A gunboat was swerving in and out of one of the lanes. A closer look showed some sort of new flesh crawling all over the hull, engulfing the vessel entirely. Was this some sort of disease? Or some Sith alchemy? To make matters worse, the affliction was spreading to other ships in the lane, taking them over with pulsating slime. Every pilot in the lane became aware of the threat and chaos erupted, with spacecraft flying out on all kinds of vectors.

This wasn't just random either. Each infected ship targeted one freighter. A quick glance to his scanners identified it as the Cole's Requiem.

What could possibly be so important on board?
Kostodu wondered to himself. His hail was answered, followed immediately by the words: "How good a pilot are you?"

Kostodu hesitated for a millisecond. There went his plans of introducing himself in a nice, calm manner. "I guess I'm decent," he replied. He watched Knight Vanagor's ship blast off towards the commotion.

What was he working with here... An X-wing, not the newest, but it still packed a punch. He dug quickly into his mind to remember the last time he'd flown one of these. It was on a patrol mission on some less used trade route, no combat involved. He then went back to flight camp, even learning to use an X-wing.

He got nothing. Damn his bad memory. He looked around the controls with a sense of urgency, his one ally in the system already ahead of him. Oh, a red switch. And it had a label! His lucky day. He flicked the switch and a chime rang in the cockpit to announce his S-foils were in attack position. Grabbing the yoke with renewed confidence, he set off after the Knight.

The tendrils began to expand across the hull of the Cole's Requiem, and only began to react once gunfire began to sear the fleshy connectors. As chunks were blown off the writhing mass, more flesh would begin to merge and collect in the spaces that were damaged.

It was still a finite resource - however - and the gunfire was severing thick chunks of it, leaving globs of flesh to float out into space. The mass began to tactically cling onto the underside of the opposing vessel to avoid its armaments, and would inject ropes of its mass into the durasteel once more, like extending open maws that bit into the exterior.

The surrounding Gunboats that were swallowed by the biomass were shot down one by one, but a surviving infected ship suddenly released more webbed tendrils onto the Cole's Requiem, and attempted to pull itself into the ship. It would try to fuse itself under the hull in an amalgamation of meat and steel, as it regrouped with the remaining biomass in its discriminating conquest.

If the connection was made, something would begin to move quickly inside of the thick tendrils. If one were to look out at the biomass clinging to the Requiem, they would see the surface of the "limbs" begin to bulge out, like something was traveling through it.

Imagine squeeeeezing yourself through a tight and sticky space, until you found liberation at the end of the dark and dank tunnel... That is how the Made Men droids felt as they burrowed through the flesh, and out the other ends. They would try to cling to the ship's surface as it made an attempt to free itself from the biomass.

Three Made Men were ejected from the spacefaring biomass. The droids faces were gaunt and full of crazed expressions. They'd attempt to violently pound at the exterior of the ship in an effort to fit themselves inside, through whatever hole they could puncture into it.

While this chaos would occur in the silence of space, a communication link would be connected with the Cole's Requiem, from the invading party.

"--BZZT -- Ahh... Listen to the monsters at your door. What do they say in response to your weak threat?"

If Oksana was to hold her breath, and listen intently at the fading communication link, she would hear voices...
But... Who did these voices belong to?

"Mother! Help.... HelP ME... I DON'T WANT TO DIE! -- BZZT --"
"Stop it! -- BZZT -- Stop it... STOP IT!!!"

The voices of crying children... Begging and innocent pleadings... The chortles of amused infants. All these conflicting sounds of both anguish and uncanny glee would merge into a white noise over the intercom. The only answer to be gleamed from this... Was only suffering, from voices screaming into the future - begging for freedom. But where were they coming from?

She managed to shoot some of those tendrils off. Yet it was like some forgotten nightmare as they seemed to reproduce themselves and attack her ship even more. And what was worse was that they were moving out of her gun's reach.

"Damn it!" With her shields failing, Oksana had half a mind to make a short hyperspace burst. But if her calculations were wrong, then there was a chance that the Cole's Requiem could be torn apart instead of breaking free. Or, the attacking vessels could just be brought along with her own, and then what good would that strategy of served her? Only that of wasted fuel and wasted time.

Alarm bells continued to sound, as well as the creaking and banging noises against the hull down below. The lights in the cabin flickered and the passengers began to panic. Just as Oksana was going to leave the cockpit, her intercom turned on and a voice that she did not recognize spoke through it. Instead of giving her a fright, her blood began to boil as she grabbed her double-bladed axe from her back. Yet the childlike voices got her to pause. It wasn't so much in the fact that they were children, but moreso the fact that they were in anguish and pain.

Whomever was attacking her ship was surely going to pay....

"Only a weak coward uses monsters and children to do their bidding." Oksana left the cockpit quickly, following the sounds of the banging while her grip tightened on the handle of her axe. Her twin blasters were still strapped to her thighs giving her an added form of offence for whatever foes she was bound to face.

And it was directly to them that she was headed. Right at the source of the banging and creaking of metal being torn below her feet. Oksana pulled open the access panel on the floor. With her left hand she pulled out one of her blasters as she stood her ground and trained her aim on the culprits on the other side.

She could feel something happening on the ship... something else was attacking it as they had gotten along side of it and she was listening int the force. "Shhh shhh shhh.. I am listening." She said it as the one piloting the ship remained quiet for a moment and then he spoke again. "Ah there is strange things coming over coms......." His voice trrailed off as the red blade was in his chest for a moment and she was looking at him. "Excuse me... I am trying to listen.." She said it and was looking for the way in as she held the blade and debated a few things to try... main one was space walk and her saber on the ship.. other was hoping the real fun would open a hatch for lifepods or cargo.... she pulled her hair back into a tighter ponytail while securing it with a grin on her face.

The Dark Side.

Connel sensed the Dark Side.

Connel HATED the Dark Side.

He is aware of what was happening with that.

Hitting the Comms as he activated the pilot droid to take over and the droid brain to man the cannons.

[If you can spacewalk over to the ship, do so, if not, keep them off me please.] He didn’t wait for a response. Connel knew whoever was on the other end had the same intentions as he, after all, the New Jedi Order crest was on the X-wng’s fuselage. As ”The Defender” pulled up alongside [I”The Cole’s Requiem”, the Jedi Knight worked the controls of the access hatch once he was sure that they lined up with the other ship. Once the familiar sound of the pressurization went up. Once the green light hit, Connel opened the door on his side and saw a woman standing over an access panel, weapon trained downward.

Quickly activating his upgraded model combat shield, Connel went into an aggressive stance, a very aggressive stance. He called out, The Jedi in me wants you tell you to “Drop your weapon!" He also wants to hope you have a darn good reason for holoding it. His instincts told him to attack, but he needed to assess the situation fully before making a move. Connel's eyes darted around, looking for any clues about the woman's intentions.

Kostodu's lips grew thin as he heard that he would need to spacewalk over to the freighter. He wasn't so sure about the safety of extravehicular activity... but he was a Jedi, and Jedi needed to face their fears. He reached behind his seat for his helmet and sealed it. It looked rather odd to fit his lekku, but it would be a short spacewalk. Hopefully. The Twi'lek brought the X-wing to the dorsal side of the Cole's Requiem, just a dozen meters from the hull. After setting the fighter to autopilot, he was ready.

He inhaled deeply, like it was the last breath of oxygen he'd ever take, before popping open the canopy (much to the computer's dismay) and exited carefully. He held onto the hull, locating his target right beneath him. They were traveling at the same speed, so it should be a simple jump. Kostodu let go of the hull, and pushed off of it.

And missed completely. One leg had slipped off the hull, giving him a weird approach angle, and now he was dangling off the port side of the ship. Without this luckily placed indentation in the access hatch, he would be floating about in a cold dark void.

Wait. An access hatch! Kostodu's eyes lit up with renewed determination, observing it carefully. There was a pad of green buttons in the middle, with faded Aurebesh on them. The Padawan squinted to read. He hit the equalize button first, then prepare, and finally open. The hatch slid up into the hull, revealing a short tube. He stood inside while it pressurized, then emerged in a corridor.

He needed to find Connel. At a fast jog, he hunted after the Jedi Knight's presence in the Force. Just as he turned a corner, the ship lurched, no doubt from that weird bio-plague that was targeting whatever cargo was inside. At his pace, he tripped and slid across the deck, only a few paces from Knight Vanagor, and some random woman with an axe. Was he in trouble?

No, they were all in trouble, he knew as he heard the shaking and pounding from below. Maybe he should have stayed aboard his X-wing.

"Uh, what's going on?"

THe sound came to her... the swishing of the doors opening as she looked at the one with a shield standing there and grinned. "Candygram." She said it as the thought she was going to need to do a number of things to try and get through was thrown out as she was invited practically with her saber there in her hand. Eyes watching him while she held the blade up and deactivated it with a look. "So you want me to throw it... where? Backwards, forwards, to the side, over the shoulder?" SHe said it while taking small incrimental steps forward with her eyes staying there... the eyes the only color between hair and skin but she saw another approach... a twi'lek and she spoke. "Well look what I get two strapping defenders of truth and justice."

Her eyes darted to the individual that had dared to enter her ship uninvited. A stowaway, perhaps? Or better yet, given that he was telling her to drop her weapon, he was more than likely some sort of port authority.

So why all the banging? Why ensare the Cole's Requiem in some kind of trap? It wasn't as though she was carrying anything illegal on board. Not this time.

Oksana narrowed her eyes as another approached. She kept her blaster trained at the hole near her feet, her muscles tightened with the determination to keep the monsters out. "The Jedi in you must be an idiot! This is MY ship and you are tress--" Her words were cut off as yet another individual made their debut and in a highly unusual way.

Pulling out her secondary blaster, Oksana trained it's barrel on the trio of tresspassers, while her first was still aimed at the void by her feet. "You all better take your Force war elsewhere. I want no part in it."

She didn’t take kindly to his being there, clearly it being her ship she had a right to be angry.
That didn’t mean he had to sit there and take her crap. The second blaster was that mistake.

Oh, okay, so you don’t want help dealing with whatever is crawling all over your ship now. Okay, I’ll just go. The other Jedi, a Twi’Lek Padawan, came up and asked about the situation naturally. It was time to handle this correctly. Speaking through the Force to his ally, Connel said…

~Greetings, Connel Vanagor, Jedi Knight. This woman apparently owns this ship and something is happening, she is in over her head but needs to get that through her head… just play along with me…~

No no… she doesn’t need or want our help, we’re leaving.

~Slowly make your way back… she’ll come around… and if she doesn’t we’ll hold them off in another manner.~

She looked at them... the one was leaving and wanting the padawan to go with him... another had a blaster tgrained on them and she spoke looking at Oksana as she held her hands up. "Wait wait wait... I made mistakes, I know I did... I saw you at the starport and took what we had.... and I turned it into a dirty hole in a starport refresher.... the one on Coruscant.... he knows the one." She said it and motioned with her head in a tilt towards the larger man. "But just because..." She looked at her and moved a little. "Wait who are you?" Azlyn said it as she looked over at the other two jedi with a shrug. She had her saber in her hand still and grinned with more of a wicked gleam in her eyes.

The Padawan rose and dusted off his robes. Now the axe-woman was shouting at the trio of Force-users, demanding they leave her vessel. Did she not see she was in grave danger? Kostodu was about to open his mouth to convince her they could help, but he heard Knight Vanagor talk. No... his mouth wasn't moving. They were communicating through the Force then. He heard Connel's words as clear as day.

So he would play along with his fellow Jedi. Maybe this little acting scheme would kick the stubbornness out of her. Kostodu sighed dramatically, pivoting around as if he was preparing to walk away. "Alright, you know what's best."

The Twi'lek began walking away in a manner that starkly contrasted his wild entrance. He was careful to be on alert, as the dark-sider still had her lightsaber in hand. How unfortunate it would be if the Jedi ended up fighting her and the monstrosities outside. Hopefully they could put their differences aside this one time and work together.

Oksana was not impressed with the Jedi's tactics. First he tells her to drop her blasters and give him a good reason for holding it in her OWN ship, as though she were under arrest. And then once she clarifies what was going on, he uses reverse psychology.

Was she living in some bizarre dream?

Her secondary blaster moves from the two Jedi backing away and up to the psychotic lady spouting out nonsense while she still branded her laser sword. "I am the Captain of this ship. Who are you?!" There was a look about her that Oksana didn't like. The Force wars were as atupid as any other wars. And she cared little for all of them.

The floor beneath her feet shook as the tendrils started to breach the hull further. Oksana opened fire on them with not just one blaster barrel, but with two. For a woman that loved her personal space, this was getting to be too much!
