Discussion Factions You’d Like to See - Criminal Version

This is a continuation of my post about what new factions people would like to see and a continuation of a few discord discussions.

A lot of people want to see criminal factions but they historically don’t have a ton of staying power. One reason might be that nobody has a criminal as their main character so they suffer from being an alt. Others said that without a force user group it’s hard to gain interest. Another person said they would rather see criminals with a Robin Hood code of ethics vs evil slaver spice dealers.

So I thought I’d open this up to the board. Criminal factions.. what works? What would you like to see?

Please be nice. This is supposed to be a fun discussion.

I’ve seen this discussion had a few times, and idk if my response will add anything new that somebody hasn’t already said, so sorry in advance but —

For me — Narrative and a vision is half the battle. I’ve said a few times on discord that most ideas, really all, can work, they just require the creativity to make them happen in the given mechanics. There’s soo many criminal factions in legends/canon, with a somewhat blank slate as it applies to the current time/setting in which Chaos takes place that there’s endless room to play — but the story hook and build is up is going to be really essential to where these things go. I.e think outside the box.

Heck, pull inspo from other places and use what’s going on currently on the board for context and as a sounding board into something else. If it’s solid and consistent when it comes to the elements mentioned above, and obviously well written, people will come; naturally.

EDIT:
Want to also add - & don’t be afraid to pivot and move in a new direction. If the story demands it — if the IC/OOC situation demands it, its fine to incorporate those elements and shift the focus of the group in a new direction. Things/people/organizations/etc change in the real world, mostly in response to their circumstances.

From what I've seen, the two that have worked best to varying degrees was overarching syndicates like the Hutts or Pykes that employ all manner of underworlders to do their stuff. And then another that worked well for a while what the Kraken Coalition while it lasted and it operated like a Pirate Council. Every Captain operated sort of on their own, but they could loosely band together against direct threats.

In the end, major can work with something like the Hutts, but they typically don't last in the long run, cause if you think about it - criminals of all flavours aren't interested in territory. They just want to steal and bounty and stuff.

I know not so long ago Darth Metus Darth Metus started the Haxion Brood with his alt, but they've been pretty quiet lately, sadly. That is something I really want to see, actually and be part of - just a clean Haxion Brood with no other strings attached. Just good ol bounty hunting and gladiator-type sports.

Ultimately, the best thing for criminal factions of any flavour would be other factions playing a part in it. It's no fun being a criminal and there's no actual risk involved when you're operating in, say a major faction cloud. You can rob the reserve bank on Coruscant and no one really bats an eye. Maybe one person in the whole territory. If that can change and there's actual IC risk involved for crimes, then it can be fun and last longer no matter what criminal concept is used, even if its new and not Canon.

They Haxion Brood just got a new admin a bit ago. I popped over there but it’s really quiet but I’m told the admin is brewing up some new stuff. Maybe we will see a surge from them soon. I hope so. They are around on discord if you go there.

Piracy can be big fun and I do want to see it make a resurgence! But like I said, there has to be risk involved to make it worthwhile. Actual IC risk is mostly the reason why criminal factions don't last, cause you eventually lose drive to just continuously NPC your risk.

I did have an idea for a faction that would be a sort of cops vs robbers thing. It would include police like characters who acted as like galactic FBI to hunt down criminals. Then it would also include the criminals who would go on a most wanted list. So it would have a lot of PvP.

The issue I’ve always had is what to call such a faction.

I remember you starting that up. Nice concept, but maybe a bit difficult to execute cause it'll be a skew line with more criminals than goodguys. It should really be a collab thing between a criminal faction and another one. I remember when Enclave did exactly that. We actually invited criminal factions to take part in our threads like the Krakens and the Family. Was big fun and was story for both factions to build on.

Would be awesome if other factions did that as well. And a criminal faction shouldn't just sit in its own corner and wait for something to happen - go out and talk to other factions, minor and major, about story beats and such. Collab.

It's not necessarily a "criminal organization", but...

You know what I'd love to see?

I want to see some Jawa offworlders.

Think about it. They aren't evil, they aren't good. Their job is to just locate themselves where other people wouldn't and basically pick up all of their unwanted scraps. They do often steal or swindle, but they are not necessarily an evil or bad faction. Also, they have a tentative alliance with the sand people, so...

There's also a lot of unexplored aspect of Jawa culture. Nobody actually knows what is underneath their robes, for example, or what kind of actual power they would have if they decided "you know what, enough is enough, we takin' over Tatooine".

I would legit play a Jawa alt just to do this, btw. Minor faction at least.

EDIT: The map would also be a lot of fun. I could envision little tiny potholes of Jawa and Sandpeople all over the place, with no real dominion of any place or even a proper capital.

EDIT EDIT: There is already a faction of this sort called Twisted Sands. Who knew!
