- The explosive can maintain a remote data link with the user or any other authorized unit via encrypted PTP link or ion-scrambled ghostwave-channeled bio-hexacrypted frequency-hopping comm link. Through this, the grenade can receive and transmit targeting, sensor, and location data. This function is typically used to give the drone explosive specific instructions remotely.

- Impact
- The explosive is set to detonate on impact or sudden stoppage. This can be overridden by the anti-FF protocols in the event that friendly units, the user, and / or noncombatants are within the effective radius.
- Timed Delay
- The explosive is set on a timed delay (anywhere from two to 600 seconds). This can be overridden by remote command or anti-FF protocols in the event that friendly units, the user, and / or noncombatants are within the effective radius. This functionality can also hybridize with the seek and destroy module if specified, as the grenade can utilize its microrepulsor engine to correct its trajectory in mid-air to get closer to or deliberately home in on enemy targets, thereby correcting inaccuracy in the throw or launch,
- Mine
- The explosive is used as a makeshift mine, going off when an enemy unit comes within the lethal radius. This functionality can also hybridize with the seek and destroy module, in that the explosive can seek out a target or group of targets as soon as its sensors detect them, before detonating upon reaching a lethal radius or an optimal distance from its target(s). Naturally, this can be overridden by the anti-FF protocols in the event that friendly units, the user, and / or noncombatants are within the effective radius.
- Remote Trigger
- The explosive is set and detonated on remote command by the user. This also can be used in the manner of an airburst, to detonate on operator command.
- Seek and Destroy
- The explosive utilizes its microrepuslor engine to seek out a designated target or group of targets, going off upon reaching a lethal radius or an optimal distance from its target(s). In the case that the explosive is assigned multiple targets, it will seek to explode at a point that catches the most targets within the lethal radius.
- Impact
- Operational Protocols
- Trajectory Interference Protocols
- In the event that the drone explosive is by some means redirected from its trajectory (whether via the Force, repulsor shockwaves, or some other means), it can correct itself and recover to seek out the target again, if still intact and operational. Alternatively, if the drone explosive is already within the lethal or effective radius from its target(s) upon being redirected or stopped, it can be set to detonate. The explosive can also be recalled back to its user, typically done after an unsuccessful attempt to seek out a viable target.
- The drone explosive is capable of registering when a target or agent is attempting to catch or pull it from mid-air. In such a case, the system will make a deliberate effort to avoid this, by immediately altering its course. In the event that it can not escape (such as a Force Pull), barring any overrides, the drone will detonate upon being caught or prior to being caught (as soon as it is drawn within a lethal radius). Alternatively, the explosive may adhere itself to the hand of the catcher via the programmable matter, making for a potential surprise in the event that they attempt to throw it back.
- Anti-FF Protocols
- In the event that the drone explosive is by some means redirected back towards its user or any other friendly IFF signatures, barring any overrides, safety protocols will kick in to prevent the grenade from going off regardless of the selected detonation module. These protocols can also be set so that the explosive does not detonate with civilians or noncombatants within the effective or lethal radius.
- If the droid brain is compromised or taken over in some way, shutdown and failsafe protocols will activate to revoke its control over the explosive. In this mode, the drone explosive will be limited to only the basic modes of operation, making it more akin to a true grenade than a drone in practice, albeit with some limited target seeking capabilities.
- The programmable matter on the surface of the drone explosive can be altered to stick to a designated target, allowing for powerful point-blank blast effects should the user (or the onboard computer brain) manage to successfully “stick” their mark.

- Security: Owing to a comprehensive data and information security suite, a semi-sentient droid brain, and the offensive retention system, the FAE/MDE-02 is quite resistant to ECM, electromagnetic bursts, slicing attempts, external tampering, and many forms of electronic warfare which rely on tricking, deceiving, hacking, or even outright deactivating its systems.
- Zip Boom: The FAE/MDE-02 is blisteringly fast and agile, capping of zipping to its targets at dazzling speeds in excess of 500 km/h within standard atmosphere. It can accelerate and decelerate in an effective instant, allowing for supreme maneuverability and control.
- Spectrum Lock: The drone explosive utilizes a multi-spectrum target locking system, meaning that if one sensor or receptor type is blinded or confused by the deployment of countermeasures, the artificial intelligence can instantly switch to another and can fuse data together from its sensors for a complete picture. The system can also receive targeting and sensor data from its user.
- Smart Bomb: Equipped with a virtually semi-sentient computer brain, the FAE/MDE-02 is ultra-aggressive, inhumanly persistent, and artistically creative in seeking out its targets. Among its capabilities are the ability to reach targets around cover, concealment, or obstructions, reacquire its mark in the event of a missed pass, the active evasion of incoming fire or Force powers, and yet more.
- Low Profile: The FAE/MDE-02 has camouflage capability, making it difficult to pick out from the surrounding environment. In addition, the drone explosive is completely silent in its operation, lacking distinct beeps, clicks, or audio cues. Feedback is typically given to the user through their helmet or HUD.
- Jordan Pushed Off: In utilizing repulsorlifts, the FAE/MDE-02 also has the chief disadvantage of the technology—that being an inability to function without a nearby gravity well as the system requires mass to push against. Thus, the microrepulsor is nonfunctional in deep space and total zero-g environments, unless artificial gravity is present.
- Overload: Although it has modest electronic hardening, a direct hit from an EMP or Ion discharge will likely disable the drone explosive, grounding it.
- Fragile: Although quite elusive, the FAE/MDE-02 are lightweight, unarmored, and small, making them susceptible to damage. Very often, all it takes is a single blaster bolt to effectively neutralize one, in which case the explosive is not guaranteed to detonate.
- Double Blade: Although contained and stabilized within a magnetic field, baradium is a volatile substance. As such, a shot to the drone explosive while it is being stored on the user’s person could set off the substance, potentially annihilating the user in the process.
As First United Astral Engineering’s second entry into the personal explosive market, the FAE/MDE-02 Semiautonomous Seeker Thermal Explosive is classed as a mini-drone explosive, one of the few in the category. Designed for the modern era where trained Force-sensitives are essentially day-to-day combat encounters, the drone explosive is optimized with extensive consideration weighed to these preternatural abilities. The explosive itself is capable of dealing damage and operating in most environments, including underwater. However, limitations will manifest in total zero-g environments due to a lack of mass for its microrepulsor to function, meaning that the drone will be unable to propel itself.
For the explosive itself, the FAE/MDE-02 is a thermal detonator. Thus, it deals damage in the manner of a fusion reaction, manifesting instantaneous and severe superheating effects. In this manner, it can atomize objects within its lethal blast radius. However, due to the particle field which shapes the outer surface of the blast, the effects of the detonation only go as far as the set lethal blast radius, and no further. This means that there is no “effective radius”. Those immediately outside of the lethal blast radius may only suffer minor or negligible effects.
The explosive comes in three sizes—a mini-explosive size, a standard grenade size, and an anti-tank size. The mini-explosive size has the smallest blast radius, being optimized for covert use and use in most grenade launchers. For standard battlefield and combat use, the grenade size comes next, with a fairly typical blast radius. Finally, the anti-tank size has the largest blast radius, optimized for use against armored vehicles.
All in all, the FAE/MDE-02 Semiautonomous Seeker Thermal Explosive is hoped to open a new frontier in the market for First United Astral Engineering, while also providing its clients with what is anticipated to be a bleeding edge grenade-analogue for soldiers.
