Fake Malware Warning Pop-Up

Description of issue: Been having this annoying pop up happen on the site on occasion telling me I need to call this number because I have Malware. It's not on my end because I've scanned my computer multiple times and it's ALWAYS just on this site.

Browser: Google Chrome

Severity: Only I've reported it so far, but others might be having it occur aswell.

Never trust anything in your browser while you're connected to the Internet. You likely don't have malware on your computer. From what I know (please correct me if I'm wrong on this) people are able to put up such fake popups because the site is not https secured. Maybe it's just an evil ad and adblock will help, I don't know.

What I do know for a fact however is that if you actually do call the number (which I do not recommend) they will atttempt to lure you into downloading all kinds of software, give up your credit card, etc. etc. So don't worry. You are alright, just close your browser immediately when it happens.

[member="Count Morcus"], I have had it pop up when I didn't have adblocker. So yes. Get that. Second, All posts you have will need to be saved in a word doc *not online doc as it won't let you leave the page even if you try to X out the entire browser.

Then shutdown your computer. Simply press the button. *do not hold the button, because then your computer will force shut down, and you will get the pop up to come right back up as soon as you bring up google chrome.*

Adblocker will take most of it for you. Otherwise, if you see it happen again, check when was the last update your computer had for your browser. If it was recently, then that is what is going on. Your computer's update was the cause. So then you will either revert back to the old one, then reinstal the software for the update.

ctrl+shift+esc

This will bring up the task manager so that you can force shutdown google chrome. When chrome asks to restore the pages (if you have that turned on) tell it no. Then turn adblocker back on.

This isn't a problem with my browser. I've already got Adblock installed, and for the most part I havn't had it occur again today. Computer's malware-free according to Malwarebytes, so this is something on the site's end. At any rate, it hasn't occurred again yet today, and I've just added it manually to the adblock filters just to be safe. And don't worry, George, I know it's an obvious con. The text alone makes it obvious. xD

Just had it pop up again. I think it might be something that's been inserted into the forum's code. It DEFINITELY isn't google because it only ever happens here, on this site.

One way you may be able to prevent this in the future is:
1. Copy and paste the URL in the address bar into a document(Open Office, Notepad, Word, any text editor will work as this is temporary(make sure you get all of it or it won't work)

2. Open up Command Prompt(should work without Admin privilege, but open the Admin just to be safe, you may have to use the Windows+X key on your keyboard to access the menu, after that press 'A' to open an admin control prompt).

3.Once this is done you will need to type in 'tasklist.' (The reason I am not mentioning Task Manager is that this should give you a complete list of all processes, as some are hidden from Task Manager.)

4.The process you are looking for is 'chrome.exe(There will likely be multiple versions that appear. This is normal. Look for the FIRST process with this name, it should have the most memory usage. This is the main process the rest are just background apps and open tabs. Don't worry about these.)

5.There will be a number to the right of the process itself, this is the PID or Process ID number. Take note of this as it is the way to make sure you kill the main process and not just the tab or a background Chrome app.

6.Once you know that number and have written it down or memorized it (I suggest the former personally, but that is just for ease of reference), type in 'taskkill/pid' and use the number from the last step. This will close out the process.

7.Reopen Chrome and go to Adblock. Open Adblock and add the URL from the first step as a specific site to block.

I know it is a long list to bypass Task Manager, but this is the way I would go about it if you cannot access Task Manager. If you can then the steps are a bit easier. Step 1 is the same for both.

1. Copy the full URL of the false malware alert.

2.Open Task Manager and select the Processes tab if it doesn't default to it.

3.Find the 'Chrome' process under Apps.

4.Select 'End process'.

5. Check below to make sure all Background Processes related to 'Chrome' are closed(They should do so automatically, if they do not just manually end the processes).

6. Relaunch Chrome and open Adblock and add the site's URL to the Block list manually.

So the second way is one step shorter if it works out. Either method should work though. Once added to the Block list you shouldn't see the offending site popup again.

Tried the method and it didn't work, Kurayami. I think whoever's stuck this thing in the side code has put in multiple links. Someone needs to contact the forum developers, because it's only ever happening whenever I'm on THIS site.
