Feedback on....secret character?

So I have mentioned this in multiple places, but quick run down here. I was led here a month or two ago by a friend who use to be involved here. They loved it here, but they said they weren't coming back as it was time to move on. They had multiple characters, but one they loved and killed off quite a long time ago. They gave me permission to use their character as long as I agreed to keep the spirit of the character alive and earned the character's rank myself instead of being given it.

My question is, while I got approval to do this from them and an admin, what is everyone's opinion on the matter? I am not sure if it has been done before and I admit I am still looking into the character, but I like the idea of a mysterious sith who actually is someone people would know, but the identity is secret for a while. While I think it is a fun and rich in plot idea, I want to know if anyone has issue with me doing it before I get too involved. I can always make a different Sith character, this idea just sounded fun.

To me this sounds wrong. Writing a character that once belonged to another person, regardless of intent will never feel right, at least in my eyes, when interacting with that character, because every writer is unique in the fashion of how they write. That's just my opinion though, I might be in the minority there.

I see it similar to....movies. My favourite movie, The Count of Monte Cristo has a main character, Edmond Dantes. Originally a book character, but played twice once by Robert Donat then again by Jim Caviezel. The same character, but different interpretations. Luckily, the original writer have been friends for a long time and still are. Until I feel comfortable I can always ask them how their character should act or would act.

Thank you for giving your thoughts and advice, I very much see your perspective.

It's an interesting concept.

Have you read through that character's old threads to get a feel for how they act, speak, think, etc.?

I would honestly feel very daunted at such a task, and under a lot of pressure to get their personality right and do their character justice, especially if they are a well-known character on the site. I wouldn't do it personally for fear of messing up a character, being accused of not being true to the character, etc. and just preferring to create my own instead which are tailored to my own style and thought process.

(Oh and request the space gets removed at the beginning of your username if you haven't already, makes tagging annoying!)

I'd say that a character created by another person is often difficult to get into to and eventually you might get burn out after a while. If it's a character you truly love, perhaps that wouldn't be the case. I do believe writing some form of event to explain the slight change in character due to switching writers would be useful, but not necessary. (Nothing cliché like getting amnesia however.)

I believe the space was removed. Well I know the writer personally and he based his character'set core beliefs off himself and I have RPd with variations of the character so I get the just of it.

Without revealing who, I will say the character was killed and the female I play is the killer, but got dark transfered. The transfer was sloppy. That is why in the writing you see in her mind she is a sith lord, but then actually performing it she has to rete achieve herself. Basically keeps me leveling properly, bit logically makes it to where the character is a lord, but needing to learn to walk again. Also gives me a chance to change some flaws the writer and I agree the character had gained over the years.
