- Now you see me, now you don’t:
- The Feilong Repulsors are designed to be miniaturized, scaled down small enough that they can be woven into an item of clothing without causing the fabric to distort or fall unnaturally. The Repulsors can also be scaled up to the size where they can be fitted into small vehicles and armours.
- Push and Pull:
- While a normal repulsor is capable only of generating a repulsive force, the Feillong Repulsor takes advantage of gravity-manipulating technologies found in the Gravity Disk and Gravity Generator to create an attractive force as well. The Gravity Disk, and Gravity Generator are devices responsible for the generation of gravity onboard ships and space stations. This means they pull objects down to the floor, as opposed to the Repulsorlift that pushes against gravity. The Feilong therefore had the ability to push against mass as well as pull towards it.
- The Field of Play:
- Generic Repulsors normally only generate a force, pushing out from them and carrying an object or vehicle with them to allow them to counter the force of gravity, floating and moving in ways that were not otherwise possible. The Feilong does this and more, using technology found in more advanced systems such as the Artificial Gravity Generator to create finite sustainable fields of gravity.
- Coils of Power:
- An electromagnetic field, an aspect of technology John was well versed in, actually does create a gravitational force as it impacts the world around it. The gravitational effect created by this electromagnetic force is extremely weak, even the most powerful electromagnets don’t create a gravitational force capable of affecting much by themselves. However, gravity is not just a force but can travel as a wave, meaning that the additional of an extra gravitational source can modify the wave. Since an electromagnetic field is much easier to manipulate than a gravitational source, the Feilong uses a tightly wound ultrachrome coil as a manipulating field to super charge, or adjust the base field generated by the repulsor.
- Fine Arts:
- By using the gravitational force generated by the electromagnetic field the Feilong Repulsor is capable of using the force of gravity not as a bludgeon, but as a scalpel. It is able to use directed micro-beams and fields of gravity for a variety of purposes a standard repulsor would be unable to (such as medical, fine industrial etc)
- Light as a Feather, Heavy as a Stone:
- The Feilong Repulsor includes the technology incorporated in the Gravitational Field Disruptor, that is the ability to create a localized field which increases or decreases the weight of the objects within it.
- Combat:
- Being struck by a repulsor is not a pleasant feeling, the micro-repulsors in the Repulse-hand are able to “tear deep gashes in an opponents flesh, and even break bone.” (Wookie). The more powerful Feilong Repulsor doesn’t just tear gashes in flesh but due to the ability to switch between the push and pull of gravity can rend it, tearing gashes so deep in a criss-cross pattern that it can potentially break a limb or armour into pieces.
- Now you see me, now you don’t:
- Although the Feilong can be constructed in different sizes, there are limitations to this. The smaller the unit, the weaker it is individually. While many smaller Feilong Repulsors can work in tandem to overcome their individual weakness this requires a very capable processor and power system to support it.
- Push and Pull:
- While the utility afforded by the ability to generate gravity or anti-gravity is useful, they also use two different technologies. As such switching between them isn’t instant, a pause which in the middle of combat can be deadly.
- The Field of Play:
- While much of the utility of the Feilong comes from its ability to generate gravitational fields, doing so prevents the repulsor from exerting the force that allows vehicles to fly forcing the user to choose between the options. The field generated by a Feilong is also only covers a finite area, the size of which is dependent on the size of the repulsor.
- Coils of Power:
- The presence of electromagnetic coils wrapped around the Feilong Repulsors makes them more vulnerable to electromagnetic fields and EMPs than most.
- Fine Arts:
- While the Feilong is capable of creating micro beams and fields of gravity, when doing so its ability to shift large weights and vehicles is nullified. Furthermore, the repulsor can only work in one direction at a time, meaning that fine manipulation will require multiple Repulsors working in tandem, which makes it easier for something to go wrong.
- Light as a Feather, Heavy as a Stone:
- Momentum and inertia still exist and will need to be taken into account. Depending if you’re increasing or decreasing your weight the effect of gravity might increase or decrease your motion slowing you down, or sending you blasting off, while you remain in the field. As useful as the repulsor’s fields might be, the basic laws of physics still apply.
There are a few natural laws of the universe that remain constant no matter what you do, or how much time passes. The flow of time, the presence of electromagnetic forces and gravity.
If there were constants that would always exist then it was better for them to work for us.
With that reasoning in mind John had already turned his attention to the forces of electromagnetism, taming them and incorporating them into his engineering and technology. Now it was the turn of gravity.
The Feilong Repuslor is the first step in that plan, the key to bending the forces of gravity to John’s will and incorporating it into future technologies produced by Locke and Key Mechanics.
